Just about every TV, Blu-ray player and other home theater component comes packing USB ports these days, so you can connect an external hard drive. But really, does anyone actually do that? Toshiba doesn’t think you need additional wires in your setup, which is why they’ve introduced the Canvio AeroCast audio and video streaming wireless hard drive.
The Canvio AeroCast streaming wireless hard drive can actually link to Google’s Chromecast (sold separately for $35), so you can stream all of your personal audio, video and photos, without separate cables. Just download Toshiba’s Google Cast Ready app and you can “cast” all of those goodies from the hard drive right to your big screen.
The one downer is that the hard drive only has 1TB of storage, but it will force you to back up and maybe even delete some of those vacation pics that you insist on showing on a regular basis.
If you don’t have the Chromecast or just want to keep this device for storage purposes, rather than video streaming of your TV shows, know that you can upload and back up content using the device’s built-in WiFi connection. (That means no actual Internet is required.) That’s certainly a neat way to get all of those photos off your smartphone.
Promising up to five hours of battery life, the Canvio AeroCast Wireless Hard Drive can even connect with up to six devices simultaneously, in case you want to do video streaming, share vacation pics or even get a music medley going.
“Storage needs are changing. By understanding the importance of mobility, we have taken storage to the next level. With integrated wireless capabilities, we empower our users to share and stream their personal digital content the way they want, wirelessly,” said Maciek Brzeski, vice president of branded storage for the Digital Products Division at Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc. “The Canvio AeroCast Wireless Hard Drive fills a real need for consumers—they’re now able to enjoy the content that they own, wirelessly on the home television.”
Toshiba is shipping the 1TB Canvio AeroCast streaming hard drive now, with an MSRP of $219.99. The company also makes the Canvio Cast Wireless Adapter, which allows users to wirelessly upload, share, download and stream stored content to mobile devices. Compatible with iOS and Android devices, the adapter sells separately for $79.99. Also Available on Amazon.
