Silicon Image is Already Planning for Wireless 4K

We’ve been hearing a lot about Ultra HD (4K) projectors and TVs. Earlier this month at CES 2014, we even started hearing about new 4K content. Some of those options haven’t started coming in yet, but Silicon Image is already hard at work on ways to make it wireless.

The company just announced a wireless video connectivity solution that can support Ultra HD. Based on Silicon Image’s 60GHz WirelessHD technology, the setup includes a transmitter and a receiver that can send full, bit-accurate video at data rates up to 8Gbps.

That basically means that you won’t have to worry about where you’re placing that 4K TV. Silicon Image will be able to make a cable-quality wireless connection between 4K displays and sources.

“Our 4K Ultra HD WirelessHD reference design will allow consumers, gamers, and home theater enthusiasts to upgrade to 4K technology without sacrificing ease of connectivity or design elegance,” said Jim Chase, senior marketing director for wireless products at Silicon Image. “WirelessHD is the ideal solution to allow consumers to enjoy 4K Ultra HD content in their homes without adding complex cabling or compromising quality or performance.”

Of course, there’s no word on when this option will materialize, but Silicon Image was showing off how it all works earlier this month at CES.
