Ambient light is probably the biggest barrier to projection-based home theater. Light rejecting screens and brighter projectors have done a lot to solve the problem, but those screens are expensive—too expensive for many basic home theaters.
Screen Innovations, the company that introduced the first light rejecting screen, the Black Diamond, just announced a new screen called the Slate. It’s a less expensive option then the Black Diamond, but still manages to reject 65 percent of a room’s ambient light.
SI says that its Slate screen eliminates the need for theater enthusiasts to resort to gray screens, which can enhance contrast, though at the expense of light.
A 100-inch 16:9 Slate screen will retail for $1,799.
Slate will be available January in standard sizes up to 200 inches in fixed frame, motorized and Zero Edge formats
