Last week, Samsung announced plans to start shipping its HomeSync Media Hub. Now, the company is introducing a brand-new streamer box at a slightly lower price.
That lower price is because the newly announced Smart Media Player (GX-SM530CF) doesn’t have any sort of Android goodies built in. Instead, it’s just a box that allows you to turn any TV into a smart TV.
That web access allows users to add Samsung’s Smart Hub to any TV, which provides on-screen access to the likes of Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Instant Video, and much more.
Another perk is that the Smart Media Player allows you to actually ditch your existing cable box. In other words, the Smart Media Player is compatible with most major cable providers (via a CableCARD). So besides the web-based extras, this box can also interact with your live TV lineup.
It can also suggest new things to watch, via Samsung’s S-Recommendation feature. Other highlights include AllShare and Screen Mirroring for pairing the box with one of your favorite Samsung portables.
Samsung will start selling the Smart Media Box on October 23. It will ship with a remote and an MSRP of $149.99.
