Dolby Atmos is a 3D-style sound format, which makes it possible to experience sound from every angle—including overhead. However, if you want to have immersive sound, you’re going to need the proper equipment.
A Dolby Atmos-capable theater needs extra speakers to accommodate those extra channels, as well as a good receiver. Onkyo USA is giving us that receiver at a price that won’t break the bank. The company is now shipping the TX-NR545 for under $600.
This 7.2-channel receiver is the most affordable Dolby Atmos option in the company’s lineup, with support for up to 5.1.2 channels. It even has the Dolby surround up-mixer, so you can spread some of the content that hasn’t been mixed for Atmos around your entire speaker layout.
It also boasts 65 watts per channel (8 Ohms, 20 Hz-20 kHZ, 0.7% 2 Ch, FTC), as well as WiFi, AirPlay and Bluetooth. That type of connectivity will allow you to stream all sorts of extra music to the receiver, including services such as Spotify Connect and Pandora (just know that subscriptions and/or fees may apply). Using the Onkyo Remote 3 control app, music fans can also stream web radio and any music that’s stored on that favorite mobile device.
Besides being a beast on the audio side, the TX-NR545 has the types of video perks you’d want in a brand new receiver. Onkyo USA has packed the TX-NR545 with support for Ultra HD content, with HDMI and HDCP 2.2 support that can pass 4K/60Hz video with the 4:4:4 color space and a 21:9 cinema aspect ratio.
Other features include a 384kHz/32-bit hi-grade AKM DAC for playing Dolby Atmos, DTS-HD Master Audio and high-resolution audio formats, as well as a Quick Setup function, a USB port, and the AccuEQ room acoustic calibration/correction function.
The company has designed this receiver to be the cornerstone of any AV setup, so it even has six HDMI inputs to accommodate all of your AV essentials.
