Putting the TV above the fireplace is always a bit of a gamble. First of all, try holding your face above the fireplace for a while. How does it feel and smell? Now imagine all of that heat and debris going into your TV.
Of course, a lot of people don’t actually use their fireplace, making mounting a TV above it — still a bad idea. The viewing angle is the absolute worst, unless you’re the type that really appreciates a nice, sore neck. Well, one company is hoping to change that with the MantleMount.
The MantleMount makes mounting a TV above the fireplace the perfect place, assuming you’re not worried about the heat and the debris.
The MantleMount allows you to mount that flat screen and pull it off the wall, then down in front of the fireplace, so it’s at eye level. From there, you can even swivel it left or right, making every seat in the room the best one. Then once you’re finished for the night, the MantleMount can pop the TV back into place on the wall above the fireplace.
And assuming you want to tempt fate and use that fireplace, MantleMount does have heat-sensing handles, which turn red if the temperature above your fireplace exceeds 110 degrees Fahrenheit.
Designed for TVs 48 inches and up, the MantleMount can support up to 100 pounds. It’s also easy to install, has a paintable cover to hide all of the wall hardware, and comes with a 3-year replacement warranty.
Currently, MantleMount units are ready to ship, but the company is looking for create a little buzz by offering them at a discount through Kickstarter. Since the company has already more than doubled its initial $25,000 goal, all of the best early-bird discounts are gone. However, you can still secure a MantleMount for $229 (which is $160 off the MSRP) if you make a pledge before September 17, 2014.
