Just when you had started to forget about OLED technology, LG Electronics is making it interesting again. The company recently debuted two OLED panels, but they aren’t the kind you can get from your local retailer or installer.
The first one is an 18-inch transparent OLED panel, with another 18-incher being flexible and rollable.
The transparent model boasts 30 percent transmittance. In case you’re wondering, the typical transparent LCD is around 10 percent. This basically means that LG’s display is less hazy and looks a lot better.
However, even more interesting is the flexible OLED. This panel has a resolution of 1200 x 800, with about 1 million megapixels. The back also has a high-molecular substance-based polyimide film instead of the typical plastic. This allows for a curvature radius of 30R — and means that the panel can actually be rolled up into a tube with a radius of 3cm, all without affecting the function of the display.
Are you ready to roll with roll-up TVs? While there’s no guarantee that this will ever be a consumer product, LG does have bigger plans for the technology.
“LG Display pioneered the OLED TV market and is now leading the next-generation applied OLED technology,” said In-Byung Kang, senior VP and head of the R&D Center at LG Display. “We are confident that by 2017, we will successfully develop an Ultra HD flexible and transparent OLED panel of more than 60 inches, which will have transmittance of more than 40 percent and a curvature radius of 100R, thereby leading the future display market.”
