LG Cuts $2,000 from 55-inch OLED HDTV

This may be a big year for OLED TVs or at least bigger than last year was. While the January Consumer Electronics Show teased us with several new OLED TVs, mostly from Samsung and LG, at the moment the market consists of two products—both curved 55-inch 1080p models, and both very expensive.

One just got a little less expensive. LG announced this morning that its 55-inch OLED HDTV can be yours for about $7,000. How’s that? The once $14,999 55EA9800 announced last July (the price did drop shortly after Samsung announced its $8,999 OLED TV) just got an official price cut to $7,999 plus a $1,000 instant rebate, bring the price to $6,999.

Yes, that’s still a lot of money for any TV, especially one that’s only 55 inches (diagonal), but it is one of the few big OLEDs on the market, and this technology is something home video enthusiasts dream over.

A press release stated that the LG 55EA9800 will be available through the first half of 2014. We assume that means that by then the new 2014 models will be out (though there’s no hint of what the new LG OLED TVs will cost).
