WHEN CHOOSING A THEME for a home theater, it’s important to get the entire family: involved. The owners of this 415-square-foot entertainment room let their four young: children set the course for the design, with some massaging of the concept by Mom.Together, the family settled on a Jungle Book theme, inspired by the kids’ admiration of animals and Mom’s love of the movie. However, the idea didn’t surface without some nudging by the home systems integrators at Hanson Audio Video, of Dayton, Ohio. “At first the family was leaning toward a very traditional style theater, as is the style of the rest of the house,” says Troy Hanson, the lead designer on the project. “We told them that this is one room that doesn’t have to match the rest of the house and to consider something completely unique. It didn’t take long to expose their love of Disney and The Jungle Book, and we ran with it.”

While Hanson and his team set about choosing A/V equipment for the renovated space, local artisans created the look that the family was after. Columns flanking the screen were sculpted to emulate what you might see in a Mayan temple, while a colorful mural depicts scenes from the movie. The mural itself took three years to create, with the artist first painting the entire image on canvas in her studio and then transferring it to the walls of the theater where it was applied like wallpaper. Even the theater entrance pays tribute to The Jungle Book. Here, the design of a sliding door was plucked out of a movie scene, and the background of a wallmounted Control4 touchpanel displays images of a jungle. From this single touchpanel, which was customized by Hanson Audio Video, the family is able to prep the room for family movie nights–and other activities–quickly and conveniently.
A single tap of a Movie button activates the Sim2 video projector, Pro Audio Technology surround-sound system, and Kaleidescape movie server. The room lights also dim to a predefined level that’s ideal for watching flicks. With another touch of a button, the lights adjust again when the family chooses to watch sports or use the space as a social gathering spot. The change can be elicited either from the wall-mounted touchpanel or if the family is already settled in one of 14 gray leather Elite Home Theater Seating chairs, from a Control4 handheld remote.
No matter what type of video the family chooses to watch, the shape of the screen adjusts accordingly, switching automatically from a 16:9 aspect ratio to a wider 2.35:1 CinemaScope format, thanks to a special lens that Hanson fitted onto the Sim2 video projector. And they don’t always have to watch the show in the theater. The Control4 system distributes video from the theater to every TV in the house. But The Jungle is where they love to escape to the most. – L.M.
