Just last month, Denon announced plans for a pair of Dolby Atmos-enhanced receivers. Now, we are getting more details on those products, including availability and pricing info.
The AVR-X4100W and the AVR-X5200W will be part of Denon’s new line of X Series Network AV Receivers — as well as part of the line to include the new Dolby Atmos format. The hook on Dolby Atmos is that the audio technology can deliver sound from a variety of different directions, including above you.
Four DSP (Digital Sound Processing) engines help to deliver that tech to the AVR-X4100W 7.2-channel receiver — and can even pump things up to a nine-channel Dolby Atmos layout, if you’re willing to add in a separate 2-channel power amplifier. This type of setup allows for 5.1.4 or 7.1.2 configurations. That basically means you can have a traditional 5.1 layout with four speakers overhead or you can use Dolby Atmos-enabled speakers anywhere in the room to create the same effect. A 7.1.2 configuration would have a 7.1 system with two speakers overhead or you could use Atmos-enabled speakers in that setup as well.
Boasting 125 watts per channel, the AVR-X4100W has a video processor that can support 4K Ultra HD 50/60Hz full rate content and 4:4:4 Pure Color 4K sub-sampling pass-through. It can even upconvert and transcode standard-def and HD content to up to 4K Ultra HD 50/60Hz resolutions.
Of course, a new receiver like this one includes decoders for Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS Neo:X, Audyssey DSX and Dolby Pro Logic IIz. It even has Denon’s own D.D.S.C.-HD circuit with AL24 Processing Plus and Denon Link HD for connecting to a Denon Blu-ray player.
This model also allows for a ton of streaming music options. It has built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, DLNA, and even AirPlay. Other features include eight HDMI inputs, three HDMI outputs, a front USB port, and Audyssey MultEQ XT 32 (Pro ready) room calibration with Sub EQ HT and LFC.
For a slight step up, the AVR-X5200W 9.2-channel receiver is the flagship model of the X Series. It includes all of the same features listed above, but includes a monolithic amplifier design that can crank 140 watts per channel. Like the AVR-X4100W, the AVR-X5200W can also deliver Dolby Atmos sound beyond its nine power amplifiers stages.
As is, the AVR-X5200W can do a 5.1.2, 5.1.4 or 7.1.2 setup. However, if you’re willing to add in a 2-channel power amp, you can crank that up to a 7.1.4 or 9.1.2 Dolby Atmos configuration.
Denon will start shipping the AVR-X4100W and the AVR-X5200W sometime in October. The company has priced the new receivers at $1,399 and $1,999, respectively.
