If you have a little something from the 2015: Denon or Marantz collection in: your home theater, you may be eligible for a very important update. Both: companies have just announced plans to start rolling out firmware that will add DTS:X support into a slew of existing products.
DTS:X is a sound format that’s very similar to Dolby Atmos, which we’ve talked about at length. This audio format allows content creators to assign sound to certain objects, instead of grouping them into channels. That way, you can experience immersive audio from almost every direction, including above. For more information on the technology, check out “DTS:X Unleashed on Home Surround Sound Systems.”
When Denon and Marantz debuted new home theater components for 2015, they were promising a DTS:X upgrade would be coming. Now, they are going to deliver on that promise—but only for select 2015 models.
Denon will start the upgrade process by unleashing the free-of-charge firmware to the AVR-X7200WA (and the AVR-X7200W as well), the AVR-X6200W, and the AVR-X4200W. Once updated, all three of these receivers will be able to run an Audyssey room-equalized DTS:X setup of up to 9.2 or even 11.2 channels (with an extra 2-channel amp).
The 9.2-channel AVR-X7200W(A) will be the first machine to get the update, starting on January 28, 2016. Upgrades for the 9.2-channel AVR-X6200W and the 7.2-channel AVR-X4200W will follow, starting February 18. If you have one of the above receivers, don’t expect to just get the update automatically. First, you’ll need to enable the “Update Notification” option in your receiver’s settings. If you have that on, just look for the notification to appear on your TV and follow the on-screen instructions.
More recently, Marantz announced it would also supply the DTS:X update to SR7010 and SR6010 receivers, as well as AV8802A (AV8802) and AV7702mkII preamps. As with the Denon models, once these components get the update, they will be able to run an Audyssey-equalized DTS:X setup with 9.2 or even 11.2 channels (with the 2-channel amp).
The AV8802(A) will be the first of the Marantz models to get the update, starting February 4, 2016. Firmware for the other three will start rolling out on March 3. If your component is connected to the web, you will get an update notification once the firmware becomes available. If you have the “automatic update” feature turned off, make sure to manually check for those updates!
Both Denon and Marantz expect to update additional products with DTS:X support in the coming year.
