DISNEY VACATIONS ARE ALL ABOUT FAMILY and having fun. It made sense, then, to the owners of this 425-square-foot space, who happened to have three young children at the time of the home theater’s inception, to use the popular theme-park destination as the room’s design inspiration. Classic Disney colors–bright red, yellow, and blue–dominate the furnishings, along with plenty of Mickey, Donald, and Goofy memorabilia to enhance the decidedly Disney vibe. The room design was personalized further with the addition of a wall border peppered with some of the family’s favorite movie lines, such as “You can’t handle the truth” and “Houston, we have a problem.” A neon sign at the entrance reads Cinema K, which is what the family chose to name their theater.

This room, however, isn’t just about bright paint and colorful accents. The home systems integration team at Admit One Home Systems, of Edina, Minn., made sure that the entertainment value of the room would be equally worthy of Disney’s stamp of approval. Overhead, a light fixture was fitted with LED rope lighting that changes color–red, blue, or yellow–based on whichever button the owners press on an RTI handheld remote that was custom programmed by Admit One for the family. This same remote operates an impressive array of A/V gear, which includes an Oppo Digital Blu-Ray Disc player with access to–you guessed it–a plethora of Disney movies.
A 100-inch Stewart Filmscreen screen is recessed into a custom-built proscenium, which serves as a hiding spot for the center speaker (the left and right speakers and two subwoofers are tucked into the adjacent pillars). The remaining four James Loudspeaker speakers that comprise the room’s Integra surround-sound system were recessed into the wall studs during the construction of the room and were covered in blue acoustical fabric. – L.M.
