Home security cameras are plentiful these days. However, most of them are simple DIY home security systems that connect to your home network and offer real-time viewing (and sometimes even storage) that’s accessible from your smartphone.
Swann has made its SwannSecure DIY home security systems more of a complete package. The all-in-one monitoring system includes WiFi-enabled cameras and a 7-inch monitor. Of course, you can view those cameras from your iOS and Android devices. However, if you don’t have one of those or don’t want to use it for security purposes, the monitor is actually made to travel.
That 7-inch monitor has a built-in rechargeable battery so you can view the action from anywhere in a widescreen format, with 1024 x 600 pixels. That monitor also has a touchscreen for flipping between live video and whatever gets recorded to the included 8GB microSD card (which can be upgraded to 64GB). It also has a micro-HDMI port for viewing on a bigger screen, as well as a headphone jack.
As far as the actual security camera is concerned, it’s Swann’s NVW-470, which can deliver 720p images with a 1-megapixel CMOS sensor. Designed to be placed on a flat surface, wall or ceiling, it has a built-in IR cut filter to enhance the camera’s night vision—for clear images up to 50 feet. According to Swann, it can be installed indoors or outside (but beware, it doesn’t seem to be waterproof), and has a built-in microphone and motion-triggered recording.
Because so many are looking for DIY home security systems that aren’t limited to just one camera, Swann has made the SwannSecure expandable (up to four cameras). The company sells a starter package with one camera and the monitor for $379.99, and a package with a second camera for $499.99. If you want a multi-camera setup, but aren’t sure how many to start with, you can also purchase the NVW-470 WiFi camera separately for $139.99 each. Available on Amazon.
