Home security is becoming a big thing. Of course, there will always be prowlers. However, the rise in the category has a lot to do with how easy (and affordable) it’s becoming to install and monitor a security system.
Samsung is adding to those simple options with two new products for its SmartCam portfolio. We reviewed the SNH-1011 last year. Now, the company is updating the line with the SmartCam HD Outdoor and SmartCam HD.
These two new Wi-Fi IP cameras promise full 1080p HD streaming, as well as 128-degree ultra-wide angle lenses. Because one is for inside and one can withstand the outdoor elements, any homeowner can easily monitor everywhere in and around the house, with no storage or monthly fees.
Other features on each include a 2-megapixel, 1/2.8-inch CMOS sensor and IR cut filter, as well as local video recording up to 32GB (via a microSD card). Recording can be set to be continuous or based on motion, with footage saved locally or viewed remotely via web-enabled devices. Alerts, real-time email and push notifications are also available options.
The SmartCam HD is specifically designed for inside the home, with a range up to 16 feet. The SmartCam HD Outdoor increases that range to 50 feet and adds in weatherproofing. The unit also boasts a build that combines a camera with a power/Wi-Fi component. That design allows the camera to be placed outside, without the need for a nearby electrical outlet.
Both the SmartCam HD and the HD Outdoor will be available in March. Samsung has already priced the new cameras at $179 and $229, respectively.
