Every house should have smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. (You have those, right?) Of course, when you installed those home alarm systems, you probably weren’t thinking about smart features—and having to get a ladder out almost certainly isn’t going to entice you to upgrade.
D-Link recently announced an interesting little product that can add smart features into those existing home alarm systems you already have: installed around the house. The mydlink Smart Alarm Detector (DCH-S165) can monitor and identify sounds from any standard UL-certified smoke or CO alarms.
Just plug the device into any available electrical outlet within 50 feet of your smoke or CO alarms. Once plugged in, you’ll connect the mydlink Smart Alarm Detector to your home’s WiFi network. When it starts to detect one of the sounds emitted by those specific home alarm systems, it will send an alert to your favorite mobile via the free mydlink Home app for iOS and Android devices.
That same app will allow you to control other D-Link Connected Home solutions, as well as create home automation “recipes” via IFTTT (“If This Then That”) features. For instance, you can create a rule that says whenever the mydlink Smart Alarm Detector is triggered, lights will turn: on and a camera will begin to: capture footage of the event.
“For the last 35 years, at least one smoke detector has been required in homes to notify residents of a fire. What happens when no one is home to hear the alarm?” said Ken Loyd, director of product marketing for D-Link. “Available for less than a single wireless smoke alarm, the mydlink Smart Alarm Detector provides a simple, cost-friendly solution that sends mobile notifications when you’re away from home for added peace of mind. The Smart Alarm Detector is ideal for second homes or additional protection for monitoring an elderly parent.”
D-Link will start selling the mydlink Smart Alarm Detector sometime in the second quarter of 2016. Expect the product to be priced at $59.99.
