The Nest Learning Thermostat continues to be a hot little item in the smart home market. Now, they are taking that innovation a step further by adding in voice commands.
The company just announced that the Nest Learning Thermostat now works with Google voice commands and Google Now. What does that mean exactly? Well for starters, it means that you can control the Nest Learning Thermostat by speaking commands into your smartphone or computer.
It also means that you don’t need to fumble with the app on your way home from work. Instead, you can just talk into your smartphone and have your house preheat or cool down on your way home. Just open up the app and tap the mic. From there, you can say something like, “Raise the temp to 72,” and the Nest will act accordingly.
If you want the entire process to be even easier—it can be. Just enable OK Google voice recognition on your phone. Then, you can simply say “OK Google” and speak a Nest command at any time, even if you’re in the middle of using another app.
Another nifty perk is Google Now, which allows users to preheat or cool a home, based on a phone’s location. The app can actually recognize where you are and your estimated time of arrival. That way, you can have a perfect temperature ready for when you open the door.
According to Nest, the new features are available on mobile devices running iOS or Android, as well as computers with Mac OS, Chrome OS or Windows. To take advantage of the new features, check out the Google Works with Nest page and click to connect. From there, follow the setup process. Users will need a current Gmail account and the Google app (for iOS or Android) or the Chrome web browser.
