Earlier this year, Sonos celebrated the 75th anniversary of Blue Note Records by releasing limited-edition Sonos speakers. The Sonos Play:1 Blue Note Limited Edition started selling in the beginning of March, but only about 2,000 of them were made.
Now it looks like there’s a new reason to go into a frenzy, because more limited-edition Sonos speakers are now available. The newly announced Sonos Play:1 Tone is the company’s second limited-edition speaker.
The Tone features an “understated design,” so you shouldn’t expect the flashy blue of the Blue Note edition. Instead, it boasts “tone-on-tone styling,” which basically means you can get it in pure black or pure white.
While the outside may be very pretty, there shouldn’t be anything too surprising on the inside. These upcoming Sonos speakers feature the same awesome performance as any other Play:1 speaker, thanks to two custom-designed drivers with dedicated amps, as well as access to over 60 streaming music services. That lineup includes Pandora, Spotify, Google Play, SiriusXM, Amazon Music, iHeartRadio, and many others. And all of those goodies can be access from anywhere in the house via a smartphone, tablet or computer. [Read more about the original speaker in our “Hands On: Sonos Play:1 Review.”]
“We want our products to reframe how people think about technology in the home. Part of how we do that is by focusing on simple things with innate power,” said Tad Toulis, VP of design at Sonos. “This was our focus on Play:1 Tone. It’s a meditation on essentials.”
Sonos started selling the Tone on July 21 at 10:00 a.m., priced at $250 each. Although the company is offering these Sonos speakers in black and white, know that there will only be 5,000 made in each color option. Because of the exclusivity, the company is limiting purchases to two speakers per household.
