Smartphone? You don’t need no stinkin’ smartphone—at least with something like the Streamz. This new headset claims to be the first pair of “smart headphones.” What’s so smart about it is that it can lighten your load, by completely ditching the need for an external music player.
However, this doesn’t just mean that you won’t have to carry as much stuff. Streamz promises to deliver better sound quality than all of those portables with sub-par DACs and amplifiers. That’s because the built-in Android music player, which has storage, a color display, WiFi and Bluetooth with aptX, also has a high-fidelity DAC and amp.
That little perk means that Streamz wireless headphones can store and autonomously play 96kHz/24-bit HD-quality or 44kHz/16-bit CD-quality music. It can even play music from services such as Pandora and Spotify, with Tidal and Deezer access expected in the near future. No smartphones are needed!
Streamz has two 50mm dynamic speakers, an OLED 128 x 128-pixel color display, an Android 1.6Ghz quad-core processor, a frequency range of 20Hz to 20kHz, and a dynamic range of 115dB. Other features include storage for up to 36GB of music, over-ear leather cushions, an integrated microphone, a 3.5mm input and output, and more. Also worth noting is that the company plans to offer the Voxxi voice control module, so users can search and play music with Google voice commands.
According to the company, Streamz has a Bluetooth 4.0 wireless interface and an optional Streamz Bluetooth audio transmitter (Tranz!), which also allows users to watch a movie, TV show or play a game with unparalleled sound.
“Streamz is the next major paradigm shift in wearable entertainment,” said Streamz CEO Douglas Kihm. “When it comes to music, people want the absolute best quality whenever and wherever they go. With Streamz, you no longer need to bother with a separate player since it’s all built inside. Many people don’t want the hassle of carrying, connecting, and draining the battery of their phone. Now you can easily and instantly enjoy all of your high-quality music at anytime, anywhere.”
Streamz will start shipping it’s headphones sometime in the first quarter of 2015. The 4GB model has a starting price of $499, with the 20GB version selling for $749 and a 36GB Streamz going for $849.
