It’s the middle of the winter, so you’re probably not thinking about your lawn. However, the good people at Rachio are thinking about your lawn. They pretty much do that year-round. It’s easy for them though, because the company’s Iro Smart Sprinkler Controller lives for that sort of thing.
The Iro Smart Sprinkler Controller is a $249 box that works in conjunction with your sprinkler system. It actually acts as the system’s “brain.” That’s because it can adjust to seasons and weather conditions, so you aren’t watering the lawn in the middle of a rainstorm.
There’s even a Smart-Cycle feature that can apply water at a rate that your local soil type can absorb. Besides making complete sense, this type of technology can also save you money and keep you from wasting water.
To install the Iro, just unplug your old controller by detaching the low-voltage zone wires and removing it from the wall. Then, mount the Iro to the wall, reconnect the wires, and plug the smart controller in. Users can also control and sync the Iro through Rachio’s free smartphone app for iOS and Android devices.
Other features include scheduling based on zones and location, a Weather-Watch option, monthly reports on the water you use and save month-to-month, and more.
“The 2014 watering season was an absolute success,” said Chris Klein CEO and co-founder of Rachio. “We saved over 10 million gallons of water and landed in two of the most well-respected national retail chains in the country—Apple and The Home Depot.”
The Iro also made it into the “Works With Nest” program. That basically means that when the Nest Protect smoke and carbon monoxide detector goes off, it will trigger the smart sprinkler controller to cycle the sprinklers—not right away, but in enough time to keep the fire from spreading to other areas of the home or even neighboring houses.
Rachio is selling the Iro Smart Sprinkler Controller now.
