Having a smart thermostat is a popular Electronic House option these days. However, it doesn’t exactly allow for customization in the various nooks and crannies of your house.
A new company named ecovent is looking to jump into the smart thermostat space, as an add-on. It works in conjunction with your smart thermostat, to make it even more energy-efficient. That’s because it allows you to “shift” the airflow, so the thermostat is heating or cooling the house on a room-by-room basis.
The ecovent has three components. It has climate sensors that can fit into any electrical outlet and wirelessly-controlled heating vents that can adjust to real-time temperature. The last piece of the puzzle is an app for iOS and Android devices.
The sensors and vents are easy enough for anyone to install. You just need to plug in the sensors and replace existing vents with ecovents. Then, connect the setup to your home’s wireless network. The app will walk you through the entire process. Once installed, users can open and close vents through the app, so airflow gets to the most important areas of your home. No zones are needed!
“Developed at MIT, ecovent applies aeronautical engineering principles to optimize airflow and preserve HVAC system integrity,” says the ecovent announcement. “It also adjusts to changes in the home and learns from users’ input over time.”
Ecovent is currently taking pre-orders — but for once, it’s not through Kickstarter. The ecovent website allows you to tailor a package to your needs, with a basic system going for the early-bird price of $360. That includes two sensors, two vents and the control kit. Pre-orders are expected to start shipping sometime in August 2015.
