Design Trend: The Ceiling Soffit
Lisa Montgomery

When you think about it, there’s a ton of technology that can go onto the ceiling. Recessed lights, built-in speakers, video projectors and wiring are often mounted overhead. All of this can make your ceiling look like a block of Swiss cheese. And, depending on the room design—like if there’s no attic space above, or the ceiling height is lower than 8 feet—the ceiling may not even be able to accommodate some of the products. Here’s where a soffit can really help, and possibly even…

10 Manliest Man Caves

Some guys love power tools. Some love cars. Some are happy with a comfy chair, a remote and something to nosh on. Then there are those who need to go above and beyond—to create a space that most men only dream about. Today, we call these spaces “man caves.” In these caves, though, the only things being fired up are amps, Blu-ray movies, video games and gigantic TVs (sometimes multiple ones). They are places where a guy can play with his toys without worrying about…

When you think of custom home theaters, special illusions usually don’t come to mind, says Rob Roessler of Illinois-based Audio Video Concepts. He was happy his team could add a little slight-of-hand for the homeowners and guests. On top of the usual theater “magic”—like everything working properly, easily and blowing away the viewers with outstanding performance—this room features a slickly designed screenwall in which the 110-inch Stewart screen appears to be floating. “The homeowners wanted a room that was easy for their family to operate…

This home’s a good example of a custom electronics pro at work. Large home, working parents, three children, basic subsystems to integrate, and easy operation required for everyone. Illinois-based CE pro Architectural Audio & Video pulled it off without a hitch, and the benefits of home technology have been great for this happy family. “The homeowners of this project are both working professionals with three young children, which made their needs very easy to explain. They wanted a system that was simple, automated, and highly…

Wal-Mart is now offering home installation services for TVs, home theaters and PCs. The big-box retailer, which expressed interest in the installation market in June 2008, has partnered with N.E.W. Customer Service Companies Inc., which has a network of 11,000 certified installers who will perform the in-home services. According to Reuters, the support service will be available in time for the holiday shopping season and is a direct challenge to Best Buy. Wal-Mart will charge $99 for basic TV installations and $129 for basic PC…

As we grow older, we tend to upgrade our cars, our appliances and our homes. And if you’re Morris Saad, you upgrade your home theater. Saad’s years of obsessive audio and video upgrades has led to his dream theater—at least for now. The professional-looking basement includes a 106-inch screen, a 1080p projector, distributed audio, 7.1-channel surround sound, theater chairs and a reclining sofa, a ticket booth and a concession stand. It looks great. It sounds great. But the real shine of Saad’s theater comes from…

It’s always kind of fun to hear the things you’d really like to automate in your home. Sorry, no personal robots to do everything for you yet. Until then, you’ll have to rely on a home control system, which Electronic House is teaming with Control4 to provide you in our “What Do You Want to Control?” contest. We’ve been highlighting some contest entries the last couple of weeks—you must do some short creative writing as part of the contest entry—so here are more from this…

Game on! The American League Championship Series gets under way tonight between the New York Yankees and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. While the Angels may play a little closer to Hollywood, we’ve been fortunate enough over the last three years to see how Hollywood—and super technology—has influenced two of the Yankees. Maybe more in A.J. Burnett’s case than C.C. Sabathia’s, as you’ll see. The big lefty has a home setup more suited for watching multiple sporting events, while Burnett, to take from the…

After the owners’ two sump pumps failed, a heavy rainfall deposited several inches of standing water throughout their finished basement. Both the carpeting and the Sheetrock were ruined, according to One Sound Choice, a custom electronics design and installation firm in Pompton Plains, N.J. The owners had contacted One Sound Choice, originally, just to restore the room. It’s only one of the company’s specialties, which also includes the design and installation of audio and video system, outdoor entertainment systems and solar systems. After discovering that…

With CEDIA Expo 2009 now in the rear-view mirror, the custom electronics community—both the installers and tech-hungry homeowners—can look toward the coming months with some optimism. Many economists are saying sales this holiday shopping season will be more robust than in 2008. But not everyone goes to Walmart and Best Buy for their electronics fixes and projects. So we’ve rounded up six products that consumers will be excited to bring into their home theater installations, from projectors to receivers to loudspeakers. View 6 Products to…
