It looks like OLED TV may soon be coming to the masses after all. After an impressive showing at this month’s Consumer Electronics Show, we’re now getting word that DuPont is working on producing Organic Light Emitting Diodes, but at a fraction of the cost.
According to Engadget (via Delaware Online), the state of Delaware has put up $920,000, with DuPont kicking in another $30 million. The chemical company plans to use that money on a facility at the Stine-Haskell Research Center in the city of Newark, with the goal of producing those OLEDs.
OLEDInfo.com says that the company plans to incorporate its “nozzle-printing” technology, which uses a continuous stream of ink to deposit OLED materials. In other words, DuPont should be able to crank out a 50-inch TV in under 2 minutes. It won’t be ready for retail at that point, but the website says that it could lead to OLED TVs that are cheaper than LCD.
When we took a look at OLED TV last year, many of the prototypes came packing hefty price tags. Despite those sneak peeks, we have yet to see an actual OLED TV hit retail.
