I keep thinking back to that day—that awful, terrible day. We had just gotten back from a weekend ski trip. It was late and everyone was tired. Nobody would be hitting the sack very soon, though. We had hours of work left to do. Seems while we were enjoying ourselves on the slopes, a pipe in our rec room had burst. Floors, walls—basically the entire room—was ruined. We’ve since renovated the space, but I still feel apprehensive about leaving the house for more than a… View this story

I hate remembering passwords, but soon we’ll be able to just smile and fuhgeddabout ’em. Our faces will be the keys to unlocking our future. As we step in front of doors, computer monitors or home control panels, facial recognition will trigger activities. “You want your personal settings to be remembered, and a biometric sensor allows devices to know who you are and adjust accordingly,” says Alex Carrausse, business development manager for XID Technologies, a Singapore-based developer of facial detection solutions. “Say you arrive at… View this story

Need to do some spying around the house? Swann’s ADW-330 doesn’t disguise its spying eye inside a bear or even a pen. However, it does have the nifty moniker of “FamilyCam” to make you feel better about your prying eyes. The set features a wireless monitor and camera with Swann’s Advanced Digital Wireless technology, which basically means it can capture and transmit video without any interruptions. The video can go pretty far, too—up to 165 feet. “For parents, our Advanced Digital Wireless technology represents a… View this story

It’s easy to test out a camera or TV and take it back if you’re not happy with the results. Fiber-optic Internet? Well, that’s a bit more difficult. If you have the time to wait around, you could sign up and out of services—or you could check out one of the new Qwest kiosks coming to a shopping center near you. Qwest has opened a total of 11 interactive kiosks in Colorado, Iowa, North Dakota, Washington and Arizona. Another 31 locations are coming across the… View this story

As far as we know, you don’t live in Fort Knox. That doesn’t mean you can’t have the same protection. D-Link’s DCS-6110 may not be suitable for your gold bar collection, but it should catch meddling kids and other intruders in any mischievous acts. Designed for indoor use, this IP-based camera supports simultaneous dual streaming of MPEG-4 and MJPEG. It also has 802.3af PoE (power over Ethernet) support and the built-in Samba client for NAS, which means no PC is needed. Users can also view… View this story
