You can say a lot of nice things about my house. It’s uniquely laid out. It’s spacious. It has an awesome view. But it’s definitely no high-tech wonderland. Built in the early 80s, it boasts no high-speed wiring network to support much of anything. Yes, I could always pay to have Category 5 routed throughout, but based on the obstacles we ran into when having satellite system wired up, I’d rather not. My poor broom closet has more holes in it than a slice of… View this story

In the market for some extra peace of mind? Maybe you’re looking to add some smart features to your home security. Even if you don’t have a fancy alarm system, you can beef up the locks and deadbolts, and even control them with a remote—and get alerts when your kids are safely into the house after school—with Schlage’s LiNK System. The company’s just made it easier for the masses to enjoy, making it available on the Lowe’s website. Currently the Schlage LiNK page includes a… View this story

Having your home protected with smart door locks is pretty cool. Being able to use a touchscreen or your mobile phone to unlock them, and at the same time trigger lighting, audio and climate events in your home is even sweeter. That’s how Home Automation Inc. (HAI) wants you to roll when you open one of the new electronic motorized locks from Black & Decker, its latest connectivity partner within its home control provisions. Black & Decker showed off some automated door locks for the… View this story

Who wants to worry about fumbling for the right key to get in the house, especially when it’s 10 degrees outside. We heard there would be some cool new automated door locks from Black & Decker brands back at CES, and at this week’s International Builder Show in Vegas a few more details were shown off by Kwikset. The company was showing off the next generation of its SmartCode Signature Series keyless entry deadbolts, which were featured at the Home Depot booth at the expo.… View this story

Still using keys to unlock your home’s doors? That’s so last millennium. Step into 2009 with some new Access Control products from Home Automation Inc. (HAI) that are now shipping. Fumbling with keys is not very high-tech. That’s why Black & Decker has developed a few new automated door locks under its Kwikset and Baldwin brands.  Designed to tie into your home control and/or security system, each of the locks will feature remote locking and unlocking, door status notification and automatic arming and disarming. Each product will also include SmartKey, which allows users to quickly re-lock the door for added security. One other nifty feature is that you can tap into the system via the… View this story

Forget your key? Just call up access to your home. Schlage just announced LiNK, a new line of deadbolts and locks that can be tapped into via any web browser—including the one on your cell phone. Even better, you can keep tabs on the status of visitors, and let people in—all while you are out of town. Of course, you don’t even have to touch that cell phone. Schlage LiNK deadbolts and locks provide a keyless entry via 4-digit access codes that you can punch… View this story

Black & Decker may be your go-to company when you’re thinking about a DustBuster, but what about home control? The company wants to suck up some of that business as well, and they are calling on Control4 for a little help. Control4 just announced a deal with the appliance giant, which means that homeowners will soon be able to manage ZigBee radio-equipped door locks via Control4’s home automation system. While it may not sound that wild, it actually means you can time various events, so… View this story

Who let the dogs out? That’s one question you’ll never have to think about with Plexidor. The company’s new Plexidor Electronic doggie door is designed to let your animal come and go and he/she pleases, while keeping other critters (and burglars) outside where they belong. The unit operates the same as a garage door. However, instead of hitting a button, your dog has a “wearable pass code,” which is a waterproof RFID chip that you clip onto its collar. As the dog approaches the door,… View this story

Mom is worried about your boo-boos and whether you’ve been eating, but apparently she’s not too concerned with the door locks. Sure, they love to lock the doors. However, according to Schlage, almost three out of four moms expect someone else to take care of selecting the locks. Out of the 1,200 surveyed, 58 percent of those actually said they’d ask the staff at a home improvement store or even call in a professional locksmith. There are also plenty of moms who: Leave a spare… View this story

The equipment rack holds not one media server but two. At the front door there’s a fingerprint scanner, a surveillance camera and an intercom nestled within a sleek, modern pedestal. Outside, a weather station instructs the draperies and thermostats to adjust. And those are just a few of the innovative high-tech features in Wolfgang and Cornelia Haerle’s 5,000-square-foot automated home. “We considered every possibility before we started building,” says Wolfgang. He and his wife even went so far as to place an LCD TV behind… View this story

Want to really scare intruders away? Find a good Samuel L. Jackson MP3 or do your best impression so you can record it to blast at unwanted visitors through a nifty alarm playback mechanism. The EE Systems Group Inc. (EESGI) recently released its new eVOXBOX (EE518A), a custom voice annunciation module that can play back a 40-second message on a single channel. The device contains versatile triggers and adjustable volume controls so you can use it plenty of places in the interior and exterior of… View this story
