Movie goers tend not to expect much from their chairs. They hope it doesn’t have gum stuck to it and that it’s not soaked with Pepsi, but that’s about it. Now, however, AMC Entertainment has raised the seating bar by including seat-moving audio transducers in a six-theater cinema. The Guitammer Company’s ButtKicker technology adds a sense of “feel” to the movie experience by moving and shaking the seats at appropriate points in the movie. “It’s probably the state-of-the-art movie theater in the world right now,”…

D-BOX Announces Hybrid Gaming/Theater Chair

It used to be that having a special chair was a La-Z-Boy or some other type of recliner. D-BOX’s GPH-120 isn’t just a special chair; it’s a lifemate. That’s probably because it’s really hard to get up out of the hybrid unit. The new chair combines the company’s Motion system with a bunch of gaming goodies, to make this the single most important piece of furniture in your home. Featuring 2Gs of acceleration, the unit can accommodate hours of intense gaming. Once you need to…

Take a seat: It’s going to be a bumpy ride. The makers of BodySound Technology don’t want you to just hear a movie soundtrack—they want you to feel the surround sound. The Minnesota-based company has developed an “experiential seating” theater recliner that features built-in speakers and amplification. The BodySound chairs include a pair of speakers positioned by your ears, two vertically aligned speakers behind your spine, and a larger seat-cushion speaker that forms a sound cocoon. Audio from a BodyLink receiver can be sent to…

Design Tip: Furnishing with Flair
Lisa Montgomery

Whether you’re settling down for the evening news or three-hour epic, it’s important that you have a comfy couch or seat to sit in. Specialty home theater seats are made with the right amount of cushion and support. Just as you would a new mattress for the bedroom, test out a few seats before picking a model for your home theater. Pay particular attention to the headrest. If it covers your ears you might not be able to hear the nuances of your surround-sound system.…

Want to really get an authentic taste of the baseball playoffs while sitting at home and watching on your 110-inch screen? Oasis Home Theatre Seating has begun selling the Sports HT and Outdoor Signature models from Irwin Seating Company—and they look like they came right out of your neighborhood sports stadium. The Sports HT model (pictured on left) looks a little more like one you’d see in an old-time baseball stadium, with seat and back from one-piece, double-wall, blow-mold plastic and a choice of solid…

It was inevitable that we’d soon see green home theater furniture. Start with new line of totally green Royal home theater recliners from CDGi (Cinema Design Group International). According to Carey Schafer, vice president of engineering, the wood used in the framing is Baltic birch, there are no formaldehydes, the foam in the cushions contains no CFCs, and leather contains no chromium, which is often used in tanneries. Not only does the Elmo Leather Tannery in Sweden operate a progressive environmental management system and has…

Fortress Makes Comfy Casablanca Seating

A kiss may be a kiss and a sigh just a sigh, but all home theater chairs are not created equal. Fortress Seating’s Casablanca was built for serious sprawling. Loungers are apparently becoming a popular option for the home theater’s front row. Add this baby and there will be no need to shout, “Down in front!” We are willing to get horizontal there, or anywhere else there’s a spot to spread out. As far as craftsmanship, this unit is a beauty. It features a crafted…

You might not be able to have hair like Captain Kirk, but you can apparently have his chair—at least something like it, anyway. Diamond Select Toys will soon offer a replica chair for over the $1,000 mark. At that price, you might be able to fill a theater full of them—and if you do, let me know. There’s an article in there somewhere! Gizmodo says it’s too bad they didn’t try to market Picard’s chair. I think you should be able to choose your own…

Love your home theater? But does it compare to the real thing? For a home theater to beat a genuine movie theater, it needs more than high definition, widescreen action. I’m talking about accessories. So as the saying goes, if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em. By spending some time and money, you can bring that genuine movie theater flavor (more than just popcorn) into your home. Signs & Posters Every movie theater has impressive signage. Proclaim your theater to the world with a “cinema”…

Life may be a cabaret, old chum—but that doesn’t mean you don’t need a comfy place to enjoy it from. The latest in the Fortress seating line is the Moulin Rouge. It doesn’t come with Nicole Kidman or even Zsa Zsa, but it’s still sure to dazzle. This theater sectional is available in a variety of options: chaise lounge, reclining theater chairs with pocket arms to create individual seats, and fixed sofa seating with an ottoman. Such a selection makes it a nice option for…

Surround Sound Chair from D+S Puts You in the Middle of the Action

It might look like it’s some sort of seating arrangement out of “A Clockwork Orange” or “Brazil” but the Surround Sound Chair is more for enjoyment. If you’re cramped for space or want a headphones-like experience for watching movies and concert DVDs, this product from D+S Sound Labs may be up your alley. The Surround Sound Chair comes with five speakers—two fronts, two surrounds and a subwoofer—for an in-your-face immersive surround experience. The fronts use 5.25-inch coaxial drivers in a 6-inch PVC enclosure, and are…
