I recently ran across a unique home theater installation. The entire space, from top to bottom, was covered with draperies. It looked so unlike other home theaters I’ve written about in the past, I just had to learn more about this room. Anika Ruff, president of Integrated Electronic Interiors in Winter Park, FL, presented a strong case for the curtains, saying that they simply looked better than typical fabric acoustical wall coverings. Because the room is so tall—15 feet—the acoustical panels would have broken up… View this story

It’s about time somebody revamped the remote control. Rectangular clickers are fine, don’t get me wrong. But no matter how many buttons, colors or touchscreens you put on them, they’re all still the same basic shape. Savant has recently broken the mold with its Rosie Contemporary remote. Shaped a like a candy dish, this beauty is small enough to sit in the palm of your hand. Using your thumb as you would to operate an iPod, you navigate the remote’s scroll wheel to move through… View this story

A home theater is one place where you can unleash your creativity. You can let your imagination soar, incorporating bold colors and unique furnishings into the space. If your home theater is set apart from the rest of house, like in a bonus room or basement, you won’t even have to worry about the clever decor clashing with other rooms. It’s your chance to do something totally unique. A mural can provide a breathtaking backdrop to your design plans and set the tone for the… View this story

A home theater is one room you can turn into virtually any type of space you want. Typically set apart from the rest of the house in a basement or a bonus room, it benefits from having no visual tie-ins with your art deco living room or Country French style kitchen. This means you can give it a design all its own, whether it’s ultramodern or a throwback from the roaring twenties. All it takes is a good imagination, a bit of inspiration and an… View this story

There are plenty of options if you want to mount that flat-panel screen in the middle of your wall or over a fireplace to save on space, but what about if you want it in the corner of a room? Peerless Mounts has solved this problem with its direct-corner flat-panel mounting systems. These will serve your screens of sizes 32 to 60 inches, so about the only thing you’ll have to worry about is keeping the dust away. The lineup includes the CM50 for 32-to-50-inch… View this story

Can the consumer electronics industry really be green? Seriously, we’re gadget happy, we like bigger and better TVs and audio systems, and we love, love, love killer home theater systems with lots of high-powered, high-energy oomph. So I was curious as to what types of green electronics—if any—I would find at the recent CEDIA (Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association) Expo in Denver. As one of my fellow airport shuttle passengers said upon hearing of my plans, “Good luck on your quest.” That made me… View this story

The TV industry’s advancements in manufacturing increasingly trimmer TVs has led to many changes in the home electronics marketplace. TV mounts, in particular, have undergone a major overhaul. Just like the TVs they’re meant to hold, new flat-panel display mounts are thinner and designed to sit closer to the wall. Mounts in Omnimount’s Ultra Low Profile Series, for example, protrude just 1.5 inches from the wall, affording flat-panel TVs a cleaner, more contemporary appearance in the home. Chief trims off even more excess with a… View this story

You may be wondering: How should I clean my plasma screen? Sanus Systems has an answer for you. The company is now shipping its Sanus Elements Screen Care, a series of screen care accessories that gently clean flat-panel TVs and monitors, and easily remove dust—or fingerprint smudges (my 2-year-old’s getting better, but sometimes she still tries to touch Dora the Explorer on the TV)—without damaging the screen. The Elements line includes the ELM101-X1, a complete screen care system contained in a reusable package that reduces… View this story

Just because today’s TVs are slimming down to supermodel-skinny sizes doesn’t automatically mean we love seeing it on our wall. Some people look for more elegant concealment solutions for their wall-mounted flat-panel TVs, like Vutec’s ArtScreen—and Vutec is taking measures to accommodate a slimmer look itself. The company has introduced a Slimline ArtScreen solution for the Hitachi Ultra Thin 1.5 series TVs, which are just 1 9/16 inches deep and offered in 32 and 37 inches. Vutec’s Slimline version of its popular ArtScreen gives you… View this story

By spending some time and money, you can bring that genuine movie theater flavor (more than just popcorn) into your home. Signs & Posters Every movie theater has impressive signage.
