Hands On: ZeeVee ZvPro 250 HD Video Distribution

I like watching TV. Clearly, the people at ZeeVee do, too, because their ZvPro 250 and ZvBox 150 turn TV viewing into an all-you-can-watch, anywhere-you-can-watch-it-in-HD experience. Suffice it to say, I really liked my time with the ZvPro 250. I like that the ZvPro 250 turned my condo’s coaxial network into a high-definition video distribution system. ZeeVee says there’s no limit to the number of HDTVs that can receive content from a single ZvPro 250. Connected to a cable or satellite box, the ZvPro 250…

For legendary blues guitarist BB King, the thrill isn’t gone when it comes to touring. The 83-year-old “King of the Blues” is still on the road with his famous Gibson guitar “Lucille” performing 100 concerts per year. And King gets from gig to gig on more than just a simple set of wheels. King rides in a $1.4 million, 45–foot luxury motorcoach that has more than $200,000 worth of electronics inside, making it a center of inspiration for laying down tracks, reviewing audio and video,…

This home’s a good example of a custom electronics pro at work. Large home, working parents, three children, basic subsystems to integrate, and easy operation required for everyone. Illinois-based CE pro Architectural Audio & Video pulled it off without a hitch, and the benefits of home technology have been great for this happy family. “The homeowners of this project are both working professionals with three young children, which made their needs very easy to explain. They wanted a system that was simple, automated, and highly…

Lisa Montgomery

Kaleidescape makes one of the coolest entertainment systems around. If you haven’t seen it or heard about it, you’ll definitely want to check it out (www.kaleidescape.com). It’ll make even the biggest collection of movies, music and digital photography a cinch to manage and enjoy. Unfortunately, the system is expensive, so not everyone can afford it. There are economical alternatives, fortunately. You’ll just need to find a custom electronics firm that’s willing to get a little creative. D.J. Gerling and his team of technicians at Vivid…

Remember SE2 Labs, the company that brought us the ultimate home theater in a box with AMX automation, Bryston audio, Vidikron video processing, iPod dock, Xbox 360, Blu-ray and more? At CEDIA 2009, the company is packing one more thing into that $30,000+ ITC (Integrated Theater Console) One box: multiroom audio. The new ITC 1.2 and ITC 1.5 distribute audio to two and five zones, respectively. They ship with the required keypads. SE2 created the audio system with the help of Bryston, Canadian manufacturer of…

Home Rebuilt with High Tech, but Low Maintenance
Arlen Schweiger

This Orlando-area home installation is all about ease of use. After all, the last thing these homeowners wanted after their previous home was destroyed by water damage, was any headaches from their electronics and automation systems. If there was any silver lining in that water damage, it was that it did give them an opportunity to rebuild. And that meant including such technological benefits to enhance their daily lives. Local custom electronics pro MillenniumWaves wound up working with Sorenson Construction and Jim Ross of Ross…

What could be better than a home theater PC (HTPC) or media server that doles out your high-def Blu-ray? How about two Blu-ray players? Well, Blu-ray drives, at least, in the case of Okoro Media Systems fancy new 2010 OMS-BX300 64Bit Digital Entertainment System. Already shipping despite its 2010 stamp, this one’s part of Okoro’s OMS Next Generation Series and has been optimized to let you send four different high-def streams around your home without interfering with your video recording desires, simultaneously. Since you typically don’t do all of your TV watching on just one set in the home, Digeo just made your viewing habits a little easier. The company released its summer update, which includes the Moxi Mate digital media player that can tap into media stored on the main Moxi HD DVR. For the initial release you won’t be able to schedule recordings from the Mate, but it sits on your home network and feeds video to a secondary room, such as a bedroom or…

The Wii has unleashed and new degree of action and interactivity for gaming enthusiasts. A clever custom electronics professional (CE pro) in Normal, Ill., has made the world of Wii even more realistic by integrating it with a distributed audio and video system. The setup is particularly well-suited for Wii Golf, says Jay McArdle of electronics integration firm Zeller Digital Innovations (ZDI), Inc. “By distributed the audio and video throughout the house, a family can play one hole in one room, and have the audio…

Robert Archer

Q. I seem to recall that I saw a new product that would ‘broadcast’ an HDMI signal within your home. If I am not totally insane, could you provide a reference to the product as well as any comments you may have on it? - George, Calif. A. CE Pro senior editor Robert Archer provides the following: Hi George, I am not sure what you mean by “broadcast,” but there are distribution devices on the market that will allow you to send an HDMI signal…

Q. Is it possible to connect a TV to a server? For example, if i want to run some movies from the server or maybe some games, and if it’s possible, what things would i need in order to make it?—Ricardo, Del. A. There are lots of things that you can do. An easy solution would be to purchase Apple TV or a Mac Mini. There are lots of hardware and software available that support these products’ ability to run in a media server capacity.…

Women and Technology: Say Goodbye to ‘WAF’
Lisa Montgomery

A few weeks ago, someone suggested that I write a piece about what our industry refers to as the “wife acceptance factor,” or WAF. What WAF means, basically, is that a husband will get the technology he wants for his home only if his wife agrees. While it’s easy to place the blame the wife for the absence of a 100-inch TV in the living room, it turns out that women aren’t the main roadblocks to high-tech living. In fact, they’re often the driving force,…
