Extraordinary 3D is all about creating the best environment and equipping it with powerful 3D displays capable of delivering a truly immersive experience. In the world of 3D entertainment, the believability of the experience is everything. Let’s take a look at the more advanced levels of 3D display technology available for home use. Low Tech: 3D via Anaglyph 3D Due to the limited number of true 3D TVs currently in homes, the delivery of television-based 3D content has had to rely on the anaglyph 3D… View this story

We were pretty awed by JVC’s 4K projector the company showed off at CEDIA a few years ago, and JVC recently demo’d 3D projection using two such projectors. This week the manufacturer announced its latest high-performance 4K2K D-ILA projector, the DLA-SH7NLG, which like previous models can deliver ultra-high-resolution of about 10 megapixels (4096 x 2400, well beyond full HD 1080p of 1920 x 1080). The company says the projector’s wire-grid optical engine helps achieve 10,000:1 native contrast for true, deep black levels, and dual 330W… View this story

Optoma has upped the bar with its release of the HD20 DLP Projector. This $999 projector is full 1080p, has more than enough inputs for most applications, and gets you into a front projection system for an unbeatable price. Value shop for a power retractable screen and a mount and you’re only out around $1700. I know lots of people who have paid that (and more) for a 50-inch flat-panel TV. Build The Optoma HD20 is white, has a lens cover, security bar (for locking… View this story

Don’t forget about projection when it comes to the whole 3D trend. The latest offering to get you ready for Monsters vs. Aliens or Avatar on 3D Blu-ray is an affordable 3D-ready projector from ViewSonic, the PJD6531w. It’s a DLP model featuring the latest Texas Instruments DLP Link technology as well as Nvidia’s 3D-vision technology to deliver what the company says is projection optimized for 2D and 3D performance. ViewSonic says the projector can work for commercial or home theater applications, with its native 1280x800… View this story

DVD, surround sound, HDTV, Blu-ray and streaming media have kept the home theater category growing for years. The final element has been added with anamorphic lens systems and companion 2.40:1 screens. CinemaScope was an expensive upgrade option that few could afford a few years ago when it was introduced. Since that time, however, Panamorph has promoted its retrofittable, more affordable fixed lens and automated lens solutions, helping folks make the transition from 1.78:1 to CinemaScope. It’s also something that intrepid DIYers like those on the… View this story

We love it when homeowners express their passions or hobbies in their home theaters. We’d already seen Harley-Davidson show up in one cool theater environment, and here it is again in a completely different context. For one thing, this New Jersey theater is a dedicated room, and for another it’s not your typical basement project. It’s in the home’s attic space. That in itself was a bit of an unusual challenge faced by custom electronics pro Premier Home Theater of Newton, N.J. “We were contacted… View this story

Since its introduction to the public a few years ago as a home theater concept, anamorphic home cinema systems have grown steadily in acceptance. Custom installers and intrepid DIYers have used CinemaScope solutions to combat not only that pesky letterboxing, but the commoditization of the video category. With the help of anamorphic lenses, super-wide screens and high-performance projectors, integrators have been able to offer a step-up theater experience to clients. CinemaScope has been, for the most part, universally applauded for its ability to deliver high-definition… View this story

One of the best spots to put a theater is in the basement. Isolated from the rest of the house, it’s free of many distractions, and with few, if any windows, light won’t interfere with the presentation, either. The owners of this THX-certified theater were aware of the benefits of going below grade. Unfortunately, their finished basement was already being used for other purposes. The best option, they figured, was to build an additional room onto the basement. This would require excavating the yard and… View this story

We’re huge fans of CinemaScope-type superwide movies. If the directors wanted to make them in more immersive 2.35:1 or 2.40:1 (or heck, even Ben-Hur-like 2.76:1) then he obviously had a good reason to stretch that image and fill it with important film features. But most high-definition TV is broadcast in 16:9 aspect ratio (or 1.78:1), as are a good deal of movie presentations ... so when home theater started to emerge with big-time projectors and screens, everything was geared toward 16:9—and you wound up with… View this story

There’s a lot of talk in the home electronics industry about “blending in.” You’ll hear custom electronics (CE) professionals speak about the clever ways they’ve managed to make the speakers disappear into the walls of family room. Homeowners will brag about how you can’t even see the rack of A/V equipment that drives their home theater system. Even the manufacturers of home electronics products boast about the inconspicuous nature of their flat-panel TVs, keypads, and other components. Blending in is all well and good. It… View this story
