JVC has added a bargain Blu-ray player in time for the holiday shopping season, the entry-level XV-BP11. The XV-BP11 is a Profile 1.1 Blu-ray player that stands just 1.5 inches tall. JVC didn’t indicate any of the trendy video streaming capabilities—Netflix, Amazon, etc.—on this player, so perhaps they’ll have a step-up model on the way soon. Features include a front-panel USB connection, native support for AVCHD (H.264) video, HDMI 1.3 connectivity, composite video and coaxial audio and analog audio connections. The XV-BP11 can play BD-Rom,…

I love reviewing flagship products. It’s a chance to play with some of the very best equipment this industry has to offer. Denon’s DVD-A1UDCI Universal Blu-ray Player is a dream machine that plays every existing disc format known to man, sans HD DVD. If you want a reference player that will handle all of your DVDs, Blu-rays, DVD-A and SACDs, you’ve come to the right place. But it’s not cheap to own this player. So what does $4,500 buy you over, say, a $500 Oppo…

We haven’t even reached Halloween yet and Black Friday deals are already beginning to leak. BlackFriday.info has posted deals from OfficeMax, receiving word from “a few anonymous sources” that the deals are real. (via Gizmodo) The Web site says that while the final version of the ad might change slightly, most of the items listed should be on sale. After looking over the deals, some immediate highlights include a $30 Memorex portable DVD player and a $150 Acer Aspire One Netbook. Here’s the list of…

What are the RealDVD and Kaleidescape lawsuits really about? Who is suing them for their DVD ripping products? And what will the cases mean once they have finally been settled? There has been much confusion about these lawsuits. Here, we try to clarify them. (Note: while EH Publishing strives for accuracy, this article should not be construed as legal advice; please consult your own attorneys.) First, as we write in our ongoing article, “DVD Ripping: The Latest on the Legal Front,” those companies that make…

RealDVD Software Violates Copyright Laws
Steve Crowe

A federal court has ruled that RealNetworks’ RealDVD software, which rips DVDs and stores copies on a hard drive, violates copyright laws and the CSS (content scramble system) license agreement with the DVD Copy Control Association (DVD CCA). U.S. District Court Judge Marilyn Patel has upheld a preliminary injunction that bars RealNetworks from manufacturing and selling the $30 software. The ruling may also prevent RealNetworks’ Facet DVD player from being sold. The movie studios argued that RealDVD violates federal laws by encouraging consumers to “rent,…

A new report from McKinsey & Co. says that elevating energy efficiency to a national priority could save American consumers $1.2 trillion by 2020. More energy-efficient electronics can be a big part of the solution, if mandatory energy-saving standards are enacted. According to the report, TVs, DVD players and PCs are the three largest energy-consuming devices among all home electronics and small appliances, including microwave ovens and heating and ceiling fans. TVs, DVD players and PCs made up 32 percent of electrical devices and small…

Sony’s DVD megachangers have long been popular with home theater buffs who want to store their mass media in one place. Today the company announced not one, but two Blu-ray versions of the megachanger that will hold up to 400 Blu-ray discs, DVDs and CDs. The models are the BDP-CX960, which will run about $800 and come out in the fall, and the BDP-CX7000ES that’s part of Sony’s “Elevated Standard” series and will be out in August for about $1,900. Why Subtitles May Affect Theater Setup
Arlen Schweiger
07/06 10:18 AM,

If you’re a passive movie watcher, you may not give subtitles much thought. Chances are you have an older squarish 4:3 aspect ratio screen, or maybe you do your viewing on a more common 16:9 widescreen TV, and when you’ve popped in a DVD that features subtitles you just deal with them—one complaint may be that they’re a little hard to read or follow along with while you’re trying to concentrate on the picture. For major movie buffs who have dedicated home theater setups to…

Blu-ray vs. Digital Downloads: Tale of the Tape
Arlen Schweiger

Has it really been almost a year-and-a-half since the death of HD DVD, and we’re still talking about a format war with Blu-ray? Oh, we don’t mean a high-def optical disc format war. We’re talking about what some are already calling an irrelevant and in a death spiral, against one that’s the trendy future. It’s Blu-ray vs. Digital Downloads/Rentals, and we’re taking a look at the tale of the tape for this prizefight. Yes, we know what you’re thinking – no contest, why even bother…

RealNetworks, currently engaged in a legal battle over its DVD ripping/backup software RealDVD, is looking to expand its lawsuit. The company has asked permission to include antitrust violations in its suit against the six Hollywood studios and the DVD CCA, according to court documents filed Wednesday. “Through discovery in this case relating to the DVD CCA’s and the Studio Defendants’ request for a preliminary injunction, RealNetworks has become aware of facts demonstrating that the DVD CCA and the Studio Defendants have engaged in both a…
