If you’re looking for deals on TVs for your bedroom, home office or other room where you don’t need a huge screen, Westinghouse‘s new SK-32H570D LCD gets the job done, with a little something extra. The 32-inch LCD TV comes with a built-in front-loading slot DVD player, whose direct signal path and proprietary PixelDirect technology ensures a crisp picture. The set is only 720p (1366 x 768) resolution, but then, including the DVD player it’s only $649 (and that’s pre-holiday season pricing). Other features include… View this story

Jamo DMR 70

Jamo didn’t put Blu-ray into its new DVD player, but they did make it multipurpose machine. The DMR 70 is actually a DVD receiver, meaning it can pump out five-channel power and play your DVDs in a single package. With a total of 325 watts possible, the DMR 70 uses a Class D amp to bring out the best (and then some!) from today’s movie soundtracks. Adding the Jamo SUB 200 subwoofer will bump the power up to 525 watts. Other features for the DMR… View this story

If you want your movie collection stored on your PC and don’t want Hollywood breathing down your neck, Real Networks says its RealDVD program is 100 percent legitimate for copying DVDs. It’s also now available for download, if you want to check it out for yourself. There’s an “introductory” offer of $29.99, marked down from $49.99, as well as a 30-day trial. The software seems like it will turn your PC into a nice little DVD server, letting you browse your ripped collection by cover… View this story

Unlike media servers that require that content be ripped and stored digitally onto a hard drive, a mega-changer Sony plans to release in 2009 will physically hold each Blu-ray disc in your entertainment library. “Right now, there’s no way to legally pull a Blu-ray movie off a disc and store into onto a hard drive,” says Sony’s Neal Manowitz. Of course, organizing and managing that many discs could be a real nightmare for most people. Escient, for one, hopes to simplify the task by enabling… View this story

ViewSonic’s not killing two birds with one stone. It’s killing three. The company’s latest LCD TV, the N2201w, is a 22-inch HDTV and DVD combo that also adds PC capabilities. The set’s DVD player is built-in on the side of the TV, so it’s easy to work and doesn’t take away from the N2201w’s sleek appearance. There’s a PC input for connecting computer sources, to go with HDMI and other inputs. Resolution is listed at 1680 x 1050, with a slick 5-ms response time. If… View this story

Around this time last month, we heard that Toshiba was jumping into the DVD pool again—in the deep end. With HD DVD long gone, you’d think the company would be announcing its new Blu-ray player. Not so. Instead, the company decided to put all of its efforts into pumping up the quality of standard-def, via a little XDE. Apparently, that plan is alive, well and popping up in stores. Engadget says that an XDE unit was spotted on a store shelf. There’s no word on… View this story

Everyone is so busy going Blu-ray these days. LG decided to truly make themselves stand out with the DVS450H. This new DVD player does not do Blu-ray. Instead, they went for the DivX crowd. Sweet! However, it’s not the technology that makes you look closely at this unit; it’s the super-cool design. Designed to mount horizontally or vertically on a wall or table, the unit can play high-def DiVX from a DVD or USB flash drive. “The demand for products that play DivX video has… View this story

With the Epson MovieMate 55, just add the screen and you’ve got an instant theater experience. The latest MovieMate features a projector, a CD/DVD player and stereo speakers in one portable unit. With the carrying handle and light weight (8.3 pounds), you can stuff this device in your trunk or the overhead compartment. Plug it in and Epson says it instantly provides a 16:9 60-inch image from six feet away or 120 inches from 12 feet. Sadly, the DVD player isn’t Blu-ray; it’s a progressive-scan… View this story

What should you do after losing the high-definition DVD battle? Beef up your standard DVD players, of course. Following Toshiba’s loss of the format war that pitted its HD DVD format against the Sony-supported Blu-ray standard, rumors had swirled that the company would take the “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em” approach and come out with its own Blu-ray player. And then when word leaked that Toshiba was going to be releasing a new super-secret player with something called XDE technology, many assumed that… View this story

The Onkyo elves must have been busy lately; this is like Christmas in July. The company just announced that they are adding two mid-priced home theater receivers and two home-theater-in-a-box systems to their lineup. The Onkyo TX-SR806 ($1,099) and the TX-SR706 ($899) are both THX-certified, with THX Loudness Plus audio processing. With five HDMI 1.3 inputs, the TX-SR806 promises 1080p video upscaling, a Faroudja DCDi Cinema video processor, Audyssey MultEQ automatic calibration, and support for both XM and Sirius Satellite Radio. The TX-SR706 has many… View this story

Instead of piling the kids into the car and trunk to get a deal on the drive-in (assuming your town still has one), Open Air wants you to sit under the stars with its CineBox Home Outdoor Theater System. The system is basically a 10- or 12-foot inflatable (patent-pending), a digital projector, a DVD player, a sound mixer, a “Goose Neck” LED light (for dark setups), a blower fan, a muffler for the fan, and all of the cables needed. The company says it’s perfect… View this story

dvd piracy

Did you make that copy of those Netflix movies you borrowed yet? Who me? Yeah, probably, according to recent report by the Consumer Home Piracy Research Findings. The second annual report, prepared by Futuresource Consulting and sponsored by Macrovision, details that about one third of all respondents in the United States and U.K. (with a combined sample size of more than 5,600) said they’d made copies of pre-recorded DVDs in the last six months. That’s up from a little over a quarter in 2007. Surprisingly… View this story
