HD DVR technology polarizes home theater enthusiasts into four groups. The Dish Network/DTV crowd with their RF remotes and multi-room boxes; the Motorola/Scientific-Atlanta Cable folks who usually don’t know there are other options; die-hard TiVo heads with their bloop-bloops; and HTPC fanatics who actually built or setup that HTPC themselves. I find myself in the TiVo camp. But I often want to flirt with the HTPC crowd in hopes of ditching monthly fees for a service that should be free.  Nero’s LiquidTV, which is basically… View this story

Do you have cable? Do you have a Motorola or Scientific Atlanta cable box? Might I suggest getting rid of those slow, buggy, low capacity cable-company boxes and stepping into the light known as TiVo. Strait from Tivo.com you can currently pick up refurbished TiVo HD and TiVo HD XL DVRs for 25-33% off their new MSRP.  These refurbished units come direct from TiVo with the same 1-year warranty and 30-day money-back guarantee as a brand new units. The TiVo HD is not only a… View this story

Since you typically don’t do all of your TV watching on just one set in the home, Digeo just made your viewing habits a little easier. The company released its summer update, which includes the Moxi Mate digital media player that can tap into media stored on the main Moxi HD DVR. For the initial release you won’t be able to schedule recordings from the Mate, but it sits on your home network and feeds video to a secondary room, such as a bedroom or… View this story

If you’re keeping score of the ongoing battle between Best Buy and Walmart for electronics retail supremacy, award Best Buy a few points. Best Buy is announcing a partnership with TiVo today, by which a special version of TiVo’s DVR will be heavily promoted in Best Buy’s 1,100 U.S. stores, according to the New York Times. Meanwhile, Best Buy will be promoted directly on customers’ TVs through that special TiVo DVR. Also, Best Buy is about to launch a campaign aimed at garnering customers through… View this story

Is this the start of something bigger? You may not have heard of Entone, but the IPTV provider has partnered with Vudu to chop at least one set-top box out of the equation while delivering an influx of on-demand high-def viewing. Entone announced today that its next-generation media hubs will feature the integration of Vudu’s on-demand movies and TV shows already inside—no need to shell out the $149 for a separate Vudu box. Of course, you may not have heard of Entone because it’s an… View this story

Panasonic’s got another reason to join its “Living in HD” program this month. From now through May 30, 2009, the company is giving away 30 high-def products exclusively on LivinginHD.com, one product per day (sorry we missed the first weekend). Unfortunately you won’t be winning any new energy-efficient Panasonic plasmas or portable Blu-ray players. You can use that high-def TV of yours to view homemade HD videos or photography if you win one of the three possible choices—two Lumix Digital Cameras that include 720p video… View this story

One of the biggest attractions of the music-based games “Guitar Hero” and “Rock Band” is the fact that these products allow both the young and old to live out their rock-and-roll fantasies even if they can’t play the guitar.  There are however, many people that sit home each day like the Internet sensation Susan Boyle toiling in obscurity for years without being noticed. Thankfully there are now products available to the average singing-in-the-shower Joe that allow them to make music at home without blowing out… View this story

Digeo isn’t shy about claiming that its Moxi HD DVR is “The World’s Best DVR” high up on its website. A recent Electronic House survey found that out of nearly 450 people 64 percent still think TiVo is tops, but we’ve got to say that today’s enhancements announced for the Moxi make it pretty darn attractive. Digeo detailed a slew of additional features and services for the Moxi, which retails from partner Amazon for $799—pricey, sure, but remember there are no added subscription fees—that make… View this story

We’re always hearing about different ways to access Netflix’s streaming video, but Blockbuster wants people to remember that it has a pretty robust video on demand service, too. And that means continuing to follow Netflix’s lead—like Blockbuster’s latest announced move of partnering with TiVo so owners of that ubiquitous DVR box can use it for Blockbuster OnDemand rentals and purchases. This sets up TiVo as pretty much the go-to box if you’re a big video renter and want instant access to your movies, with TiVo… View this story

When it comes to digitally recording live TV, there’s no doubt that TiVo was the first big player in the market. Sure, there were certainly a few alternatives—ReplayTV, anyone?—but when TiVo turned into a verb, you know it had made it big. But now, TiVo is just one of many DVRs available to most consumers. Cable and satellite companies jumped into the mix, offering their own DVR options (see “DVR Dilemma: TiVo or Cable?”). Media center applications, like Microsoft Vista’s MCE and MythTV, work on… View this story

If you did a lot of cassette recording pre-millennium, chances are you’ve got piles of cassette tapes in the house, whether they’re from bootlegs you made at the local club, your own band’s garage jamming or maybe even your toddler chattering away into a microphone. The Alesis TapeLink USB digital archiving cassette deck lets you preserve all of those memories if you want to burn them to CD, store them on a PC or listen to them on your iPod. The 5 Products You Need for the Big Game
EH Staff

Football players rely on the right gear to win the game. Viewers need the right gear to enjoy the game. Below you’ll find the five essential A/V products for gameday viewing. Widescreen Television: Whether you go with a flat panel or a microdisplay, make sure you choose a widescreen television (also known as “16:9”). Old-school televisions with 4:3 aspect ratios only focus on the immediate action (usually the offensive line and the quarterback), but with a widescreen TV you’ll see way back into the defensive… View this story
