As much as we love home theater and Dolby and DTS surround sound, we know two-channel audio is still alive and well. Manufacturer Rotel realizes this as well, so after introducing its 15 Series components last year heavy on the multichannel side of things, it’s kicking the lineup old school with a half dozen two-channel additions. The new models include two power amplifiers, two preamps, an integrated amplifier and a CD player, with model names: RA-1520 integrated amplifier RC-1580 preamplifier RC-1550 preamplifier RB-1582 power amplifier… View this story

Well, we’re getting closer to a full rollout of Oppo Digital’s sweet BDP-83 Blu-ray disc player. The news today is that it’s going to start shipping the fully baked product, after extensive early adopter program and feedback, May 5 to May 15 to those who have received invitations. The company says that if you haven’t received an invitation but want to purchase the $499 player, it will start sending it out to others after all the invite-players have been fulfilled. Just to refresh your memory,… View this story

Remember CDs? No, they haven’t gone the way of the 8-track quite yet, and even with all the digital downloads out there and small push from vinyl, CD’s sonics and clarity still rule for many audiophiles. NAD Electronics has a new CD player perfect for them, or anyone who values the CD format. The company’s C 565BEE CD player is the flagship in NAD’s Classic Series components, with build quality, aesthetics and playback sure to delight two-channel music fans. Among the treasure trove of features… View this story

Q. Are there any products (not boom-boxes) on the market that play tape cassettes, CDs and AM/FM radio? I am looking for a unit to place in my stereo cabinet. - Gerald A. It sounds like you are looking for “Micro,” “Mini” or “Desktop” systems. Take a look at these: Sanyo Model# DC-DA1460M Philips Model# FWM143/37 The Sanyo system is not currently available in the U.S. But you can purchase online and it will work with your other components. Shelves and shelves full of DVDs and CDs can be fun to sort through, until your jewel cases start cracking or go missing or DVDs end up in the wrong cases. Hey, I love to show off my media collection as much as the next person, but I also like things perfectly organized, and any way to save some space in my home is welcomed. Bring on the Kaleidescape system—or, if you can’t quite afford the full monty system, bring on the company’s new Kaleidescape… View this story

In case you thought otherwise, the CD isn’t dead yet. Despite decreasing sales, dominating competition from digital downloads, and the ever-present audiophile format of vinyl making a nice little comeback, there’s still a lot of room for CD. If you’re among that audiophile set, and may be thinking of trading up for a high-end CD player, distributor Koetsu USA has the acclaimed Koala Tube CD player from Italian-based manufacturer Goldenote ready to hit the American market. The Koala will give you plenty of reason to… View this story

Pick up any CDs as stocking stuffers this year? Those might just be iTunes and Amazon MP3 gift cards next year. At least, that’s how technology research and advisory company Gartner sees the future of music retailing, suggesting that it’s an immediate future. The analyst firm has released a report “Christmas 2008: The Last Year of the Retail CD” that details its facts, figures and recommendations on the shift to digital music distribution—with aisles and shelves full of CDs in retail stores merely standing in… View this story

Got the update in my email inbox today about the Oppo BDP-83 Blu-ray player—looks like it’ll be a winner if you’re a fan of other Oppo Digital products. No, the price isn’t quite as low as some of Oppo’s upconverting universal DVD players. But the company divulged some details, and much to our satisfaction, the BDP-83 will be a universal player—pop your SACDs, DVD-As in there as well as your Blu-rays, DVDs and CDs—and it will be much less expensive than the only other universal… View this story

If you’re looking for the kitchen sink in audio and video playback, Denon has you covered. The company’s new DVD-A1UDCi does it all, spinning Blu-ray Discs, standard-def DVDs, CDs—even SACDs (Super Audio CDs) and DVD Audio discs. Save your dimes, though. The “be-all, end-all” superdisc player rings in at $3,800. If you hook it up the way Denon thinks you should—to the AVP-A1HDCi preamp ($7,500) and POA-A1HDCI ($7,500) 10-channel power amp—you’ll be in the high-rent district at just under twenty grand. So what makes a… View this story

Avoca VIP Music Edition

Instead of barking out musical orders to your significant other or other loved ones, you can voice those wishes (as well as some pent-up aggression) to the Avoca VIP Music Edition. VIP must stand for “very important product,” because frankly, this unit seems to be the only one that cares about what you’d like to listen to. The system easily turns your CD collection into an accessible library, via a touch-and-talk interface. Avoca says the unit responds to volume commands, or something as simply as… View this story

Q. Is there a component I can buy which allows me to scroll through my collection of 900 CDs in a digital fashion? I don’t have the room for storage and don’t want to bog down my computer with all those files. - Jane, St. Paul, MN A. You have a couple options here. One is to load all your CDs into several 300-400 disc mega-CD changers made by Sony or Kenwood and manage them with a CD changer manager made by a company called… View this story

kaleidescape players

Media server provider Kaleidescape is continuing to bank on consumers’ satisfaction with standard DVD, for now. Though the company is working toward pushing out a Blu-ray player next year, this year’s big product still fully integrates with Kaleidescape’s robust organizational system for your movies and music. The company has announced two movie players that give your DVD collection the upconversion treatment—the 1080p Player and the 1080p Mini Player—and are straightforward in saying that these will be just as good as Blu-ray for the non-videophile mainstream… View this story
