Last year when the American Can Company factory in Jersey City, NJ, was converted into luxury condominiums, the million-square-foot industrial building not only became inhabitable for the first time in many years as CanCo Lofts, but it also went high-tech. In addition to a wireless business center and pre-wired residences, the lobby, designed by LOT-EK, an architecture firm in Manhattan, used two-dozen plasma TVs to broadcast a live feed of the New York City skyline. As more condo and apartment dwellers alike expect higher-tech amenities…

You may be wondering: How should I clean my plasma screen? Sanus Systems has an answer for you. The company is now shipping its Sanus Elements Screen Care, a series of screen care accessories that gently clean flat-panel TVs and monitors, and easily remove dust—or fingerprint smudges (my 2-year-old’s getting better, but sometimes she still tries to touch Dora the Explorer on the TV)—without damaging the screen. The Elements line includes the ELM101-X1, a complete screen care system contained in a reusable package that reduces…

Just because today’s TVs are slimming down to supermodel-skinny sizes doesn’t automatically mean we love seeing it on our wall. Some people look for more elegant concealment solutions for their wall-mounted flat-panel TVs, like Vutec’s ArtScreen—and Vutec is taking measures to accommodate a slimmer look itself. The company has introduced a Slimline ArtScreen solution for the Hitachi Ultra Thin 1.5 series TVs, which are just 1 9/16 inches deep and offered in 32 and 37 inches. Vutec’s Slimline version of its popular ArtScreen gives you…

Vizio’s busy letting loose with the news today, even on products that have been on the shelves for a month. When the news involves pricing, though, we’re listening. The company has announced that two of its plasmas that were made available in May, the VP422 42-incher and the VP322 32-inch model, can be had for just $799 and $599, respectively. Even for Vizio these are deals, since they had been announced at CES back in January at $999 and $689, as Engadget HD reminded us.…

Vizio, one of our favorites when it comes to combining performance and affordability for flat-panel TVs, has unleashed what it’s calling its high-performance series—the XVT Series, all with full HD 1080p resolution. The XVTs are available in 42- and 47-inch LCDs (models SV420XVT and SV470XVT) as well as a 50-inch plasma (VP505XVT). Of course, with Vizio, a major question is always, “How’s the price?” Well, in the 1080p game, pretty true to Vizio form. The LCDs, which will ship in July, will go for $1,499…

LG Stretches its Monitors

LG is doing for the monitor what Stretch Armstrong did for the toy industry—making it stretchy. You won’t be able to have a taffy-styled pull with the M3800S-BN and M2900S-BN; the company has already done that for you. The 38-inch M3800S-BN and the 29-inch M2900S-BN are designed for public displays, presenting data in horizontal or vertical formats. However, we wouldn’t mind seeing how these things stretch our TV/gaming to the max. LG wouldn’t mind either. “We’re excited about expanding our range with these two new…

Have you figured out if all of your TVs will be ready when the FCC flips the switch from analog to digital next February? Nielsen Media Research—you know, the guys who put out the all-important Nielsen ratings measuring how many people watch the TV programs—found that about 10 million households are “completely unready” for the transition. The research, reported by The New York Times, cited that 9.4 percent of U.S. households would have all of their TVs go dark by the time of the transition…

Consumers Want LCD Over Plasma
Rachel Cericola

Consumers have a lot of perceptions and preferences when it comes to purchasing an LCD and/or plasma display—at least that’s what a new TFC Info study says. Although many of those surveyed consider LCD to be the best bargain, price is not the driving factor that most would expect. It seems that the true driving factors are, well… outdated. The top driving force, according to TFC’s “Flat Panel End User Survey: LCD vs. Plasma 2008,” is product longevity. That’s fine and dandy, but as Twice…

OmniMount’s Low Profile for Fixed Mounts Too

Part of the point of having a flat-panel TV is so you can save room in your room, right? The closer you can keep that sucker to the wall, the better, if you’re able to go the wall-mount route. To that end, OmniMount has expanded its Low Profile Series of mounts to include fixed versions, so your TVs will be super snug with the wall. That’s leaving your TV around 1.5 inches off the wall in the fixed position, and the Low Profile Series is…

Samsung is riding the Blu wave—and adding an “e” on the end. The company has developed a new LCD technology called Blue Phase. Samsung says it will double image quality to a whopping 240Hz driving speed, making it more life-like. “Our blue phase mode is a major evolutionary development beyond conventional liquid crystal modes,” says Samsung executive VP Souk Jun-hyung. “Samsung’s development of this technology provides a tremendous opportunity to move image quality of LCD screens much closer to that of a real moving image.”…

Media Decor Offers TV Tutorials

“Who’s a greenhorn? What’s a greenhorn?”—Homer Simpson While that answer may be obvious, there are plenty of Homer Simpsons out there when it comes to selecting and setting up a TV. Media Decor just announced a series of online tutorials to take some of the common misconceptions out of how to choose, install and conceal a flat panel. “Media Decor recognizes the increasing demands of the consumer in this market segment. People no longer want to see technology, they want to conceal it,” said Jonathan…
