You’ve been hearing quite a bit about 3D lately, whether it’s the slew of movies that are being released in the format or the 3D-ready TVs or the PC games. Sure seems like “the next big thing,” so are you ready to take the plunge? Mitsubishi’s been on the leading edge of 3D-ready big-screen DLP TVs, evidenced by the bunch it released earlier this year including an 82-inch whopper. Now the company has teamed with a gaming site, IGN.com, on a 3D Home Entertainment Sweepstakes… View this story

U2, Monsters vs. Aliens, My Bloody Valentine, Chuck, the BCS National Championship, NBA All-Star Saturday Night—can you name the common theme? If you said, “They’ve all been filmed and broadcast in 3D,” then you win the grand prize. OK, maybe no prize, but it does mean that you’re up on the latest video trend. We’ve come a long way from 20th-century campy sci-fi 3D movies, as anyone who’s attended an IMAX 3D showing can attest to. Yes, we’re still wearing glasses to get the full… View this story

If you like big screens and 3D technology, check out Mitsubishi’s new 737 and 837 series of DLP rear-projection TVs. The 737 Series brings 1080p to four screen sizes: 60, 65, 75 and 82 inches. All feature 3D-Ready viewing technology. The models include Smooth 120Hz, an Advanced Video Calibration Mode, JADE activity based user interface, improved DeepField Imager, SharpEdge video noise reduction, ultra-thin frames and 6-Color Processor (which Mitsubishi claims provides significantly more color reproduction than typical flat panel TVs). All models are EnergyStar 3.0… View this story

Q. Is DLP picture quality the same as LCD? Or is there a substantial difference between the two? I am looking at Mitsubishi’s 73 inch DLP. - Robert A. It is not as simple as saying one technology is better than another. When LCD was young and DLP more mature, DLP would win hands down. DLP inherently has a very smooth, pixel free image. However, now that the LCD technology has matured, there are many LCD displays that are just as good. But you will… View this story

Energy savings has actually come to CES, of all places, as companies strive to be green and eco-friendly. Several of the large TV manufacturers have energy meters on their TVs to show how much they have reduced power consumption in recent models. LG started the trend at the CEDIA (Custom Electronic Design & Installation Association) show in September. At CES Mitsubishi had a meter on its 65-inch LaserVue TV, which uses a laser instead of a power-sucking lamp to illuminate a DLP displays. Next to… View this story

3-D in Home Theater
Dennis P. Barker

“Stereoscopic 3-D is the most exciting evolution in cinema presentation since color and widescreen. The question for film-makers is not ‘why 3-D?’, since the reasons are obvious, at least to audiences, and the negatives have all been removed. The question should be ‘how do I make 3-D a part of my art?”  - James Cameron, Film Director. 3-D movies burst on the scene back in the 1950s. We had these funny paper glasses with red and green cellophane lenses which made things pop out of… View this story

When I was asked if I wanted to review a rear projection TV, I said what I always do - Yes. Then they wanted to know how big of a set I wanted to review. Well, how big do they get? Apparently 73 inches. The Mitsubishi WD-73735 is near the top of the line from them in rear projection DLPs. It’s huge, of course, and fairly light for its size. Having such a large display comes with its own challenges, such as requiring a two… View this story

3-D in Home Theater
Richard M. Sherwin

About 8 CEDIAs and other tradeshow years ago, a semi-updated 1950s technology was introduced that wowed the conventioneers, media attendees and industry analysts alike. It was the first TV-based 3D viewing of live and video-taped theatrical content. But the lack of an accepted standard from manufacturers, movie-makers and TV producers, let the next 3D die right there. The 2000 version by X3D could be viewed by attaching a small converter box to your VCR, while the Texas Instruments version was seemingly built into the TV.… View this story

It’s nothing new for Scandinavia to give us products that focus as much on their design as their features—companies like Volvo, Ikea and Bang & Olufsen come to mind when thinking of that European region. So when Norwegian manufacturer projectiondesign throws five new home theater projectors our way, it came as no surprise that along with serving up superb images they also stand out from other projectors in their appearance. Highlighted by exquisite shading in Etruscan Bronze and Pearl White, projection design’s Avielo series includes… View this story

SIM2 D60

SIM2 products are usually synonymous with home theater sexiness—as well as a hefty price tag. Now they are getting a bit more affordable with the Domino D60 DLP projector. The unit promises full 1080p high-def, but for under $5,000. However, it’s not the first time that SIM2 has flashed a 4-digit price tag. “We now have three offerings under $10,000 that compete against anything else in this hot category,” said Charlie Boornazian SIM2’s VP of sales and marketing. While the price is enticing, the picture… View this story

At a posh SoHo loft in New York City, Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America, Inc. formally announced today additional details surrounding the performance and functionality of its new LaserVue TV, which is based on Texas Instruments’ DLP (Digital Light Processing) technology. As the first-ever laser-powered television, LaserVue hopes to deliver a range of color seemingly never before seen in home entertainment, which Mitsubishi is calling “a true dimension experience.” Mitsubishi sums up their laser-based television technology by saying that “Believing is Seeing.” According to Mitsubishi, today’s… View this story
