3-D in Home Theater
Richard M. Sherwin
09/06 01:25 AM, 6 Comments
About 8 CEDIAs and other tradeshow years ago, a semi-updated 1950s technology was introduced that wowed the conventioneers, media attendees and industry analysts alike. It was the first TV-based 3D viewing of live and video-taped theatrical content. But the lack of an accepted standard from manufacturers, movie-makers and TV producers, let the next 3D die right there. The 2000 version by X3D could be viewed by attaching a small converter box to your VCR, while the Texas Instruments version was seemingly built into the TV.… View this story

It’s nothing new for Scandinavia to give us products that focus as much on their design as their features—companies like Volvo, Ikea and Bang & Olufsen come to mind when thinking of that European region. So when Norwegian manufacturer projectiondesign throws five new home theater projectors our way, it came as no surprise that along with serving up superb images they also stand out from other projectors in their appearance. Highlighted by exquisite shading in Etruscan Bronze and Pearl White, projection design’s Avielo series includes… View this story

Planar just made the jump into the 3-chip DLP projector market. The Viper is a mighty beast, promising a slew of video delights for the discerning enthusiast with 15 grand and a hankering for images 100 inches and larger. “Viper’s exceptional image performance, most notably in contrast and black levels, combined with its exclusive design and integration features, reaffirms Planar’s commitment to offer the most impressive video displays where the image experience really matters,” said Brian Carskadon, Planar’s director of product management. SIM2 D60

SIM2 products are usually synonymous with home theater sexiness—as well as a hefty price tag. Now they are getting a bit more affordable with the Domino D60 DLP projector. The unit promises full 1080p high-def, but for under $5,000. However, it’s not the first time that SIM2 has flashed a 4-digit price tag. “We now have three offerings under $10,000 that compete against anything else in this hot category,” said Charlie Boornazian SIM2’s VP of sales and marketing. While the price is enticing, the picture… View this story

At a posh SoHo loft in New York City, Mitsubishi Digital Electronics America, Inc. formally announced today additional details surrounding the performance and functionality of its new LaserVue TV, which is based on Texas Instruments’ DLP (Digital Light Processing) technology. As the first-ever laser-powered television, LaserVue hopes to deliver a range of color seemingly never before seen in home entertainment, which Mitsubishi is calling “a true dimension experience.” Mitsubishi sums up their laser-based television technology by saying that “Believing is Seeing.” According to Mitsubishi, today’s… View this story

Are you ready for 3D in the home? Mitsubishi thinks so, and the manufacturer has enlisted the help of graphics processor Nvidia Corp. and media server manufacturer Aspen Media Products to get there. Mitsubishi announced an alliance with Nvidia and Aspen Media Products today. No specifics on what they’ll be providing together, just that the trio is using its collective brainpower in their respective realms—television production, such as Mitsubishi’s 3D-ready Diamond line; stereoscopic 3D technology that’s been a hit with PC gaming; and the media… View this story

You may have already read about PhlatLight LED technology making its way into our televisions and thought, “Wow, now there’s a good idea!” Perhaps you were also wondering if the technology would transfer over to the world of video projectors so you could have it in your dedicated home theaters. It looks like later this year we’ll be seeing lamp-free home theater projectors with Luminus Devices‘ PhlatLight in bright DLP applications. The company announced this week at the InfoComm show a collaboration with Texas Instruments… View this story

Optoma just announced some teeny-weeny technology for on-the-go types. Supposedly smaller than a smartphone, the Optoma Pico Projector weighs in at a mere four ounces. The company says that this is the first unit based on Texas Instruments’ DLP Pico chipset. Perfect to display your portables, such as an iPod or digital camera, the Pico uses the latest in LED to blow images up to 100 times larger than the source’s original screen size. “Fitting in your shirt pocket, the Pico Projector can display pictures,… View this story

If you drink the marketing kool aid, every TV should be wall-mounted and enjoyed solely by snuggling beautiful couples. Fortunately, that’s a bit off from the real world where (I suspect) most TVs still sit atop a cabinet and it’s viewers resemble, well, me and you (no offense). I agree, there are a some advantages to hanging your flatscreen on the wall - it can help with line-of-site issues if you’re room is long and/or multi-rowed, it frees up some floor space, and yes, it… View this story

Q. There seems to be a lot of plasma TVs on sale, however I want to know which is better for a room with a lot of natural light; Plasma, DLP, or LCD? - Reggie, Bowie, MD If you do a lot of daytime viewing LCD would be the best choice for a room with a lot of light. LCD TVs are the brightest of the three. Plasmas have improved over the past couple years. They used to be near impossible to watch in any… View this story
