Q. How Can I Upgrade My Poolhouse Audio Without Running New Wires?
Robert Archer

Q. I have a poolhouse that has been previously equipped with ceiling speakers and outside speakers. We just bought a new TV for my father for his birthday to put in there and are looking to upgrade our sound equipment. The problem is, the wires for the speakers come out of the wall in a different location than the TV ( a pretty large distance). I would rather not run cables through the walls/ceilings but want to hook those speakers into an AM/FM/CD (maybe iPod…

Ball Speaker Shares Music With Color

Who doesn’t love sharing their horrible taste in music with others? For just such an occasion, we have the Music Balloon. Obviously, the Music Balloon is named after its appearance. I could see my kid clamoring for this thing like the Elmo balloon that now lives in my back closet. My dog might like it too. Serves me right for thinking that anyone might want to share my musical whims—especially on a thing that looks like a lollipop. Charge the portable speaker via a USB…

We love products that know how to multitask. Sure, your cell phone can play music and surf the web, but some of our favorites are not as obvious. For instance, we’ve seen plenty of rock and planter speakers. In 2007, Soundolier took it to the next level with the speaker/lamp combo. Then just a few weeks ago, we were talking up Hunter’s speaker/fan product. Now the magic of sound has been added to a semi-ordinary light bulb. The SoundBulb taps into any audio source with…

One of the biggest hassles to putting together your 5.1- or 7.1-channel surround-sound system is all that wiring from the speakers back to the source components. Wanna get it done without the wiring? Here’s where you begin to get skeptical when we start mentioning wireless solutions—what about sound quality? Signal loss? Interference? Who better than the folks at THX to put their stamp on what promises to be a bulletproof wireless surround sound solution—the THX Roomcaster that the organization has partnered with Radiient Technologies to…

Can’t get enough of products like the speaker/light combo? Now the minds behind the lamp have teamed up with Hunter Fan Company to blow sounds from your ceiling fan. Of course, the Hunter Concert Breeze Fan & Sound System isn’t for the serious audiophile—unless it’s one that wants sound in their ceiling fans. Instead, the idea behind this product is that you won’t have to worry about speaker boxes and wire clutter. While the unit circulates air, it can also spin a few sounds, courtesy…

Polk doesn’t seem to be giving up on packing sound into one speaker. The latest addition to their SurroundBar line will soon be the SurroundBar SDA Instant Home Theater (IHT). What gives this unit its IHT status is that it comes with a wireless subwoofer, making home theater as easy as adding a TV. “The market has been calling for a solution as straightforward as this one,” says Mark Suskind, VP of Polk’s product line management. “Until now there have been too many compromises needed…

Sony Ericsson has certainly made the Walkman into a pretty cool product. No longer destined to collect dust on the shelf, the new Walkmans (Walkmen?) include phone and camera features. The newly announced W705 even has Wi-Fi support, which allows users to snag songs and YouTube videos while in any hot spot. Other features include the TrackID SensMe music recognition application, as well as Shake control, which allows you to twitch into the next song. Oh yeah—it’s a phone, too. Do you still listen to CDs? No? Oh right, more and more we’re listening to tunes stored on our computer, portable player or cell phone these days. If you don’t want to plug those devices right into your stereo system, British loudspeaker manufacturer Acoustic Energy wants to make things easier if your device is Bluetooth enabled. The company has introduced its AE-29 Bluetooth Speaker to the U.S., featuring a pair of full-range speakers and a central receiver/amplifier. The speakers themselves flank the receiver and can…

Design Tip: Go Wireless with Speakers
Lisa Montgomery

Few people cherish the thought of drilling into walls of their home to fish through speaker wiring. It’s messy work and can leave noticeable marks on the wall surface. Even if you’re comfortable doing the job, plumbing, ductwork and other items can stand in the way of your intended wiring route, making it tough to get the wire where you want it. That’s why many homeowners are turning to wireless audio systems. These types of systems can be integrated into existing homes much easier than…

We love how iLuv can crank out those iPod accessories. This time it’s the teeny iSP100 portable speaker system. The unit has only two 2-watt speakers, but promises 720° Surround Sound and jAura Acoustic Speaker technology. Using three AAA batteries, the unit is good to go with your iPod or iPhone 3G, 2G—and despite having no “i” in MP3 player, it works with those too (thanks to a 3.5mm input). “iLuv is thrilled to bring consumers a powerful sounding and ultra portable speaker option that…
