While companies such as Micromega raised eyebrows on the electronics side of wireless audio at CES 2010, several companies were making sweet music to the ears of those who want to reduce cable clutter of a surround-sound system. Polk Audio was one of those, as the company used an engaging demonstration of an “August Rush” Blu-ray in conjunction with Polk’s sound system comprising one of its SurroundBar units for the front channels and its new Wireless Surround F/X for those surround effects. I took a… View this story

Definitive Technology looked at the diminishing thickness of today’s televisions and saw a great chance to develop a better on-wall speaker. According to the company’s Paul DiComo, most of the competing thin on-wall speakers rely on some kind of planar technology which can come with audio quality compromises. At CES in Las Vegas last week, Definitive was showing its own solution to the problem in the form of the Mythos XTR-50 on-wall LCR speakers. While only 1.5 inches deep, the XTR-50 includes two active drivers… View this story

Manufacturers talk about how cool invisible speakers are and how psycho-acoustic surround sound envelops an audience, yet they keep ignoring the sound quality in TVs. TV audio still comes out of teeny, tiny speakers—and it doesn’t sound good. This is also why so many home theater systems and soundbars are sold. The problem is that many people can’t or won’t hook-up these additional systems. So are they stuck with mediocre sound forever? Not if Mitsubishi has its way. The company’s new Unisen 249 Series of… View this story

Over the past couple of decades movie and music buffs have had to deal with the problem of low-frequency sound distribution in their home theater spaces.    Lately this topic has also been a popular point of discussion on ElectronicHouse.com. Looking at the evolution of the home theater, it used to be that audiophiles would move their speakers around to get the best possible sound. Unknowingly, yesteryear’s audiophiles were not only improving the imaging and soundstage of their two-channel systems, they were also adapting their… View this story

I am in the process of upgrading my home entertainment system. I want to get as much out of the Blu-ray and HDTV as possible. I have been doing some research on the 7.2-channel surround systems and I am wondering if the extra powered subwoofer would make a very big difference. My listening/viewing area isn’t that large, and currently I have a non-HDMI receiver with 5.1 and it works really well for my space. I understand that Blu-ray has more sound information and 7.1 is… View this story

Deals on Polk Audio Monitor speakers from NewEgg come and go pretty frequently. If you miss one, another will pop up a week or two later. This time might be a little different. Or maybe it’s just a new low price they’ll break again next week. Who knows? Currently, NewEgg has the Monitor 60 floorstanding loudspeaker (in black finish) for $100/each after coupon code SPEAKER113X1. These are high-performance (for the price) floorstanders with three 5.25-inch woofer/midranges, a 1-inch polymer composite tweeter, and low-frequency extension to… View this story

The Speaker Company is currently having a 20% off sale on pretty much everything they stock via coupon code MOST15.  Some of the best products to apply these codes on are the T series speakers, PT and NT series in-wall and in-ceiling speakers (which include integrated enclosures), and TSAT series on-wall speakers.  The T series and TSAT series are also an OEM re-badging of the very popular Sapphire line once sold exclusively by Hi-Fi Buys and Tweeter, which reviewed extremely well at 2-3 times the… View this story

At first glance, this kitchen might look like any other kitchen. But what’s under the surface makes for an incredible recipe, cooked up by custom electronics pro Audio Video Concepts. The kitchen starts with one part audio, which is supplied by a Niles GXR2 multizone receiver and a pair of Niles CM710 ceiling mount speakers. These speakers are controlled by a Niles display keypad. If the chef needs a remote closer in the kitchen, he or she can use the i-remote. From these controls, the… View this story

Q: I want to add surround sound to my living room but my problem is where do I place my front speakers. I have a rectangle room and at the front left corner my 40” LCD display is mounted above my wood burning fireplace. To the right of the corner fireplace is a window and at the other end of the room is the entrance to the dining room. Would I get better sound if I use in-room floor speakers and move the display off… View this story

Home theater audio applications continue to be intensified—from 5.1 surround channels to 7.1, to even 9.1 these days when you add new “height” speakers, plus you can accommodate THX certified systems and the latest lossless high-def audio codecs. Atlantic Technology tends to stay ahead of the curve—unleashing the likes of IP-ready speakers and those with THX Select2 certification—so it’s no surprise that the company has come up with three new and improved theater speaker systems, plus some new subwoofers, to get the latest and greatest… View this story

For those who want a little more oomph from their 5.1 audio systems, Audyssey Laboratories says it has just the thing. The room correction and post-processing technology maker announced its latest innovation, Dynamic Surround Expansion, this week. DSX, as Audyssey calls it, is “a scalable system that adds new speakers to overcome the spatial sound rendering limitations faced by 5.1 surround sound systems. It says human hearing requires more than what 5.1 systems currently offer. “DSX creates additional channels to augment 5.1 systems with the… View this story
