How to make your iPod speaker stand out above the rest? Offer the grille in tasty colors such as caramel, chocolat, olive and chili pepper. Boston Acoustics’ Horizon i-DS2 has grilles available in colors outside of the major food groups, too. Aside from that, it’s not much different from any of the other iPod dock/speaker sets. The unit promises to fill the room with all of your music, via a dockable iPod or auxiliary input. It also comes with the obligatory remote. PC World even…

Loiminchay Crafts Wooden Speakers

Loiminchay is really known for their fine pens. Now it looks as though they are rewriting their company mission—and going for the audio market. While this is one of the weirdest CE switches we’ve ever seen, the Kandinsky is certainly an impressive effort. These limited edition speakers are handcrafted, designed by Patrick Chu—the same guy that did the pens. Apparently, he had the urge to rock and a team in China that could make his vision happen. The cabinets are constructed from Birch MultiPly laminate.…

Classical fans now have speakers to match that taste in music. No, we’re not talking about tower speakers specifically designed to detail the triangle or guitarpsichord. The Sounger Vin 1/8 Violin Speaker System may show off your love for the genre, but also amplifies your bad taste in decor. Armed with a slew of inputs, these speakers are designed to hook to a portable MP3 player or any other audio device. It even has a violin-themed amp, which promises LED lighting and 30 watts of…

Sunfire’s HRS can stand proud in any home theater, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t get lonely. To complement the sub line, the company has just announced its new HRS Satellite speakers—which are shipping now. Boasting a compact size and price, the new speakers come in a few shapes and sizes. There’s the HRS SAT-4 ($450 each) and the HRS-SAT4C Center ($550 each). Both handle up to 200 watts per channel, with High Back-emf and long-throw woofers. They also have a sexy curved style, designed…

The Onkyo elves must have been busy lately; this is like Christmas in July. The company just announced that they are adding two mid-priced home theater receivers and two home-theater-in-a-box systems to their lineup. The Onkyo TX-SR806 ($1,099) and the TX-SR706 ($899) are both THX-certified, with THX Loudness Plus audio processing. With five HDMI 1.3 inputs, the TX-SR806 promises 1080p video upscaling, a Faroudja DCDi Cinema video processor, Audyssey MultEQ automatic calibration, and support for both XM and Sirius Satellite Radio. The TX-SR706 has many…

Hey Rocky, watch me pull an iPod dock out of my hat… Again? That wasn’t exactly part of Bullwinkle’s routine, but these days, it seems to be a lot easier than scoring a rabbit. The latest to throw their hat into the iPod accessory ring is Samson, with its StudioDock 3i USB Studio Monitors. It’s got the iPod dock, which charges and plays your portable. However, one thing that does make this product to stand out is a USB interface, which allows you to sync…

Products with the Best/Worst Packaging
Richard M. Sherwin

When exactly did home entertainment product packaging, not the product itself, become relevant? Probably not when the first mass market TVs and stereos were carefully perused at your local audio-video dealer. But some believe that product packaging actually fueled the success of Apple’s first iPod. The design of the box was so entrancing it whipped the competition, which arguably had better MP3 players. Now-a-days it’s all about theft prevention. It’s surprising retailers haven’t been sued more often for puncture wounds (and worse) when customers, once…

Don’t think you can easily transform your room into a home theater room? Think again, says Epson. The theater bundle is now being shipped to U.S. dealers, so better get started rearranging your living room. Epson’s pretty much made the system as easy as possible and convenient for you to add in your home. The goods include a choice of 1080p or 720p Epson…

Genius Speakers Have Touchability

C’mon, c’mon, now touch these, babe. No… really. Genius promotes putting your greasy fingers all over its new SP-T1200 speakers. Also known as the 2.0 Touch Speaker System, these units have a touchpanel screen to control functions like volume, bass and treble. The company says it combines “fun with great sound.” While the sound probably wouldn’t rival your home theater, we’ll assume it’s worth the $99 price tag. However, does front-panel pushing qualify as “fun?” The unit promises 30-watt sound, with an adjustable light on…

Klipsch and Circuit City have made a deal that would bring the Klipsch and Energy brands to 700 stores across the country. It would also make many of those selections available online. For the Klipsch brand, the store will feature the Synergy Series, which includes floorstanding and bookshelf speaker models, as well as center-channel, surrounds, and subwoofers. Pricing ranges from $250 to $900 per pair. The company says that a five-speaker home theater set will also be available. Don’t expect many Energy speakers; the store…

For the man who has everything—including bad taste in music—we have the Axiom Garage Speaker. That’s not to say that these units produce poor sound; it would just be nice to relegate dad’s Air Supply addiction out to its own space. The company says that these tread-patterned bookshelf units are modeled after today’s popular tool chests, making them perfect for “the guy—and the garage—with everything.” Based on Axiom’s award-winning M3 speakers, each unit has a 1-inch titanium tweeter and a 6.5-inch aluminum woofer. The company…
