Deal: 50” 720p Plasma + HTIB for $799
Stephen Hopkins

One of the easiest ways to Beat Black Friday is to look for package deals. Having a 50” plasma hanging on the wall is great, but seeing is only half the battle. You need a little sound to round out the experience. But if you’re shopping for a 720p plasma around Black Friday, something tells me you don’t have a multi-thousand-dollar budget for audio. Luckily, Best Buy currently (until midnight Saturday) has a tidy little package consisting of the PN50B450 50” 720p plasma and HT-Z320…

Deal: LG BD370 Blu-ray Player for $129
Stephen Hopkins
11/19 11:12 AM,

CE retailers are banking on the day after Thanksgiving being not black, but Blu Friday. Blu-ray player prices are being slashed and blockbuster titles on Blu-ray will be going for $8 - $13. The cost of entry is dropping to where the average consumer can finally justify putting some HD content on that plasma or LCD. Best Buy, now running its own Deal of the Day leading up to the Holidays, is offering the LG BD370 player for a low $129 with free shipping, today…

BlackFriday.info says Walmart’s ad “includes some of the best deals that you are going to find on Black Friday and we really think you’re going to love it.” Doorbusters marked with *. Deal: Samsung 50” Plasma - $710

Many of the Black Friday deals to come have leaked over at BlackFriday.info. Want to know the trend I’m seeing? If you keep up with my daily posts, you can get deals as good or better without waiting in the cold/rain/snow/locusts while still recovering from a turkey and football coma. From now until Thanksgiving my ongoing mission will be to “Beat Black Friday” ... or at least come close while avoiding the hordes trying to grab a copy of Goodfellas on Blu-ray for $7.99. Today’s…

Deal: ‘John Adams’ Blu-ray Set - $24.99
Stephen Hopkins
11/16 11:20 AM,

Winter is on the way. The air is getting cooler, crisper, and dryer. Evenings and weekends will be spent indoors cuddled around the fire. And by fire I mean television, because that’s what we do. Of course, a couple of hundred years ago everyone really did huddle by the fireplaces. What makes us think of that is seeing the mini-series John Adams on Blu-ray, a very well done historical drama of our revolutionary times. Best Buy currently has the HBO series John Adams on Blu-ray…

Deal: Nero LiquidTV, Free Year of TiVo - $35
Stephen Hopkins

HD DVR technology polarizes home theater enthusiasts into four groups. The Dish Network/DTV crowd with their RF remotes and multi-room boxes; the Motorola/Scientific-Atlanta Cable folks who usually don’t know there are other options; die-hard TiVo heads with their bloop-bloops; and HTPC fanatics who actually built or setup that HTPC themselves. I find myself in the TiVo camp. But I often want to flirt with the HTPC crowd in hopes of ditching monthly fees for a service that should be free. Nero’s LiquidTV, which is basically…

Deal: Harmony 890 IR/RF Remote - $99
Stephen Hopkins
11/09 11:00 AM,

I recently reviewed the Logitech Harmony 900 activity-based IR/RF remote. It’s the best user-programmable remote I’ve ever tested. And while still an excellent value at its current street price of around $300, that’s not exactly cheap either. I’m always a fan of grabbing last year’s technology at a significant discount, and right now Amazon has the Harmony 890 IR/RF remote for just $99 with free shipping. More or less, it does everything the 900 does, but without the touchscreen and manta-ray styling. It also sports…

Deal: Onkyo SR707 AV Receiver - $559
Stephen Hopkins
11/06 11:40 AM,
2 Comments
For the last few product cycles, decoding of lossless audio codecs (DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD), along with video transcoding and scaling to 1080p, were the king and queen of required features in midrange AV receivers (AVRs). With this year’s release of units branded with the Dolby PLIIz and Audyssey DSX logos, Height and Wide channel processing is the new king of must-have features for those on the bleeding edge. Onkyo was the first on the block with the SR607 (and its slightly less…

Deal: Panasonic 42” Viera Plasma - $499
Stephen Hopkins
11/05 12:30 PM,

If deals like this keep coming, Black Friday is going to look darn near unimpressive. For the rest of this week, Best Buy has the Panasonic TC-P42C1 42” 720p Plasma display for a silly-low $498.99. While only a 720p display, it boasts 30,000:1 native (real) contrast ratio, 600Hz refresh rate, two HDMI inputs, and side SD card input. If you’ve been looking at a smaller set for a bedroom, living room, kids room, bathroom, guest room, garage, or storage closet, why not step on up…
