Network in need of an overhaul? Been holding off on a Gigabit network because your PC(s) don’t have capable Network Interface Cards (NICs)? Avoiding a new NIC because your router or switch isn’t up to speed?  Chicken? Egg? Cart? Horse? Well, today you can get all of your poultry and spaghetti western transportation in order in one fell swoop with help from NewEgg. The online retailer has the Rosewill RC-410X 10/100/1000 8-port network switch for only $29.99 + $2.99 shipping.  But wait, there’s more. As… View this story

Yesterday I proposed a deal on a budget Blu-ray player that still offered plenty of network streaming connectivity.  Many of you, however, are probably much more interested in critical picture quality, especially for your standard DVDs that still comprise the large majority of most people’s media libraries. Most BD players aren’t excellent DVD scalers, but today’s deal is. The Pioneer BDP-320 offers a surprisingly smooth and film-like image and is an excellent scaling DVD player. It’s also currently available from J&R for only $159 with… View this story

Waiting to see how the whole 3D thing pans out, but don’t want to wait any longer for Blu-ray? You might want to invest in a budget Blu-ray player to hold you over. And you don’t have to skip great features like Internet streaming. Circuit City has the Samsung BD-P1590 Blu-ray player for just $89.99. Add another item(s) for $10.01 or more (like an HDMI cable or universal remote) and you get free shipping. The BD-P1590 also offers Netflix, Blockbuster, and YouTube streaming, as well… View this story

TiVo is serving up some might tasty new features on its forthcoming Series 4 Premiere DVRs. So it’s no surprise that consumers and resellers alike will be pawning off their Series 3 products leading up to the April release of the newer models. Today, Woot! is offering refurbished TiVo Series 3 TCD648250 250GB THX-certified DVRs for $170 plus the usual $5 for shipping. Is that a good deal or not? The 320GB Premiere model has an MSRP of $300, and the street price will no… View this story

Yesterday’s deal was all about packing a lot of punch into a small display (and small budget). For many, the 26” Samsung LCD Monitor/TV hybrid might have been too small ... but today’s deal will be just right for you.  Dell Home has the 42” Sharp Aquos LC42SB45UT 1080p LCD display for just $539 with free shipping.  With Full HD 1080p resolution, 60Hz refresh and three HDMI inputs, this modestly priced 1080p panel packs all the important features and should complement any living room, bedroom,… View this story

I love big displays. Whether 100-inch front projection or 50-inch plasma, it takes a big display to make a big impact.  But some applications require a bit more finesse. Could be it’s a bedroom, kitchen, office (where you need a TV that doubles as a computer monitor), bathroom, or tool shed, sometimes a small high-quality display can make a big impact in a small space. Office Depot happens to have the Samsung T260HD 26-inch 1080p LCD HDTV Monitor (including ATSC/QAM tuner) for only $299 (free… View this story

Sometimes people ask me why my deals are always low- to mid-market products. It’s mainly because I’m cheap, but also because flagship products usually demand flagship prices, closed distribution networks and warranty restrictions. Luckily, every now and then, a huge online retailer cracks that distribution network and drives down the price of a great flagship product. NewEgg found its way into Onkyo’s authorized dealer network by selling a ton of entry-level receivers and HTiBs. Now they’re leveraging their buying power to bring the price down… View this story

Tons of people have a spare PC lying around the house. It’s usually not a speed demon, but with hardware acceleration of video decoding, it might not need to be if you want to repurpose it as a HTPC or movie server. With the right software, the least expensive video cards have the power necessary to decode 1080p video, even for Blu-ray playback. But hardware usually isn’t the only thing holding people back from a low-rent HTPC conversion. PCs of yester-year usually don’t look the… View this story

For many HTPC builders, storage really is the last bit of the equation. If you’re looking to fill up that rack-mount server you’ve been working on with a boat-load of drives, check out Dell Home‘s offering on 1TB Western Digital Caviar Green hard drives for only $69 each. No rebates, no coupon codes, just a limit of five (go over that and the price jumps to $89 each). Green series drives with IntelliPower offer reduced power consumption and minimize heat. Now you can start loading… View this story

I recently reviewed a 5.1 speaker set by AV123 called the ELT, or Extremely Lucious Theater. One of the best aspects of this high-value 5.1 setup was the monster (for the price) 15” slot-ported subwoofer. It was huge but didn’t look it, and dug deep without giving up musical control.  Have some room for more boom in your audio system? You may be interested in the MFW-15 but not necessarily the rest of the ELT package. ELT has (until Sunday) an amazing deal on a… View this story

When I wrote about the life left in plasma TVs, I called plasmas the bookends of the display market, representing the extreme low- and high-ends of the 40-inch-plus category. But being at the extremes doesn’t mean you can’t find great bang for your buck. The 58-inch TC-P58V10 plasma is at the top of the Panasonic food chain. 6ave.com, an authorized dealer, has the TC-P58V10 for just $2398 with free shipping after coupon code AFLPAN2398. The 1080p set has a 600hz refresh rate, 40,000:1 native contrast… View this story

There’s no better way to maximize your HTPC dollar than to build it yourself. This is particularly true when you take the next step to a dedicated server. Whether you want to serve music and movies all over the house or just have a million downloaded episodes of Cowboy Bebop, a dedicated server is the most robust, flexible, and safe (using RAID arrays for redundancy) way to amass large amounts of storage. When planning a large multi-drive server, don’t overlook the importance of the case.… View this story
