Black Friday

Good deals or not, Black Friday resulted in a lot of green for retailers around the country. According to the National Retail Federation’s 2008 Black Friday Weekend survey, about 172 million of your friends and family (as well as plenty of strangers) were shopping up a storm over the weekend. Not everyone was gung-ho about leaving the house, though; those numbers include online shoppers. Last year’s numbers were closer to the 147 million mark. Of course, that includes the entire weekend, with Friday hitting the… View this story

Wondering if the store you’re shopping in has the best price on Blu-ray players, Bratz, Wii or any other must-have holiday item? Amazon can help you avoid impulse purchases by offering a comparison shopping service on your cell phone. Amazon TextBuyIt allows shoppers to compare prices via text message. Sadly (and naturally), it only works if you want to compare an in-store price to what Amazon is selling it for. Just text an item name, keyword or even a UPC code to 262966 (AMAZON). After last week’s articles about the best Black Friday deals (and the worst), we received a ton of comments and other tips from readers about where and what were the best buys. Today, we’re looking at what’s going on for Cyber Monday, and we’re just not as interested. Sure, the Monday after Thanksgiving doesn’t provide the same adrenaline rush as Black Friday. However, it’s hard to fathom that we wouldn’t get psyched about something that allows us to lounge in pajamas and surf the web.… View this story

Mac users might score a good software deal this week. Microsoft is offering bargain hunters a Black Friday special on Office 2008. Sorry PC fans; this one is for Mac lovers only. Starting tomorrow, Microsoft’s Office 2008 for Mac: Special Media Edition will be available for a whopping 75 percent off. The software typically sells for $500, so bringing it down to the $125 level makes it sort of appetizing. The deal will be available Thursday and Friday only. Even better, you won’t even have… View this story

Didn’t think you could get past a Black Friday without seeing some deals from Apple, did you? Unfortunately, we’re not sure what those deals will be, but it seems Apple usually has something special in store for its events. And for Black Friday, you can peruse from the comforts of your home—Apple is teasing to go online (www.apple.com) to check out its one-day only Black Friday deals. We’re hoping there will be a few deal gems on the site that day, rather than a bunch… View this story

You can put lipstick on a pig—it’s actually one of our favorite pastimes. However, slapping the word “sale” on something does not make it so. This year, we’ve heard a variety of reader complaints stating that Black Friday deals are actually no deal after all. We weeded through a lot of the lingo and found 15 of our favorite sale items for the post-holiday rush. Sadly, we also found a lot of deals that turned out to be duds. In most cases, prices were exactly… View this story

Sears Black Friday

It seems to be Thunderdome regarding this year’s post-Thanksgiving sales. Is there no sanctity in the calendar anymore? A lot of people seem to be cheating, when it comes to Black Friday—and we love it. First, Amazon decided to make Black Friday a week-long event. Now Sears says it will kick off its holiday pricing promotions starting Thursday. Of course, you won’t have to leave that last drumstick behind. However, you should at least wipe your greasy mitts because the sales prices will be offered… View this story

Black Friday

The Friday after Thanksgiving, thousands of Americans lounge in their bunny slippers and allow the previous day’s dinner to fully digest. Many others, however, try to work off that pumpkin pie by getting into the pit of death—also known as the mall on Black Friday. We’ve heard a lot of grumblings from potential shoppers who don’t think this year’s crop of deals is worth getting up early, parking about 20 yards from their house, and punching someone in the face for a good deal. Inflicting… View this story

If you thought the retail sales which surfaced around Halloween were impressive, then the real Black Friday should turn out to be one early Christmas and Hanukkah present. Shoppers will find $500 - $700 price cuts on new HDTV models and $300 - $400 off home theater components. You should also expect some surprise sales on the Wii, Playstation and Xbox in stores and on-line. Here’s some insight into the discounts being tossed around by retailers and manufacturers. Amazon may have kicked off the shopping season, but don’t expect discounts to dwindle with the turkey leftovers. In an effort to create a buzz on “Cyber Monday,” The Wall Street Journal says that online retailers will be offering more discounts than ever. The National Retail Federation says that 83.7 percent of online retailers have promotions planned. That’s up 11.5 percent from last year. It makes sense, considering online spending is down for 2008. However, don’t just plan to surf your favorite websites. Some of… View this story

Stores couldn’t wait to kick off the Christmas season. Amazon feels the same way about Black Friday. In an attempt to cure that case of the Mondays, the e-tailer has not only leaked its deals; it has kicked off a week-long sale, with new items coming each day. Add another crop of deals to your to-do list. Walmart will be undercutting its fellow retailers on the hottest shopping day of the season. The retailer just announced some of its planned Black Friday prices. However, it looks like you’d better get there pretty early to get the best deals, as many are doorbuster items.
