For the last few product cycles, decoding of lossless audio codecs (DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD), along with video transcoding and scaling to 1080p, were the king and queen of required features in midrange AV receivers (AVRs). With this year’s release of units branded with the Dolby PLIIz and Audyssey DSX logos, Height and Wide channel processing is the new king of must-have features for those on the bleeding edge.  Onkyo was the first on the block with the SR607 (and its slightly less… View this story

If deals like this keep coming, Black Friday is going to look darn near unimpressive. For the rest of this week, Best Buy has the Panasonic TC-P42C1 42” 720p Plasma display for a silly-low $498.99. While only a 720p display, it boasts 30,000:1 native (real) contrast ratio, 600Hz refresh rate, two HDMI inputs, and side SD card input.  If you’ve been looking at a smaller set for a bedroom, living room, kids room, bathroom, guest room, garage, or storage closet, why not step on up… View this story

Black Friday can come weeks early if you know where to shop online. BuyDig.com has a great combo deal on the LG 42PQ30 42” 720p plasma with a Panasonic BD60K Blu-ray player with a GGI Hookup Kit for $619. If purchased separately, the price would be around $885. The 42-inch plasma features a 600hz sub-field drive, 12,000:1 contrast ratio, and 3 HDMI inputs. The BD60K is an entry-level player that features BD Live. The hookup kit contains high-quality interconnects (all 6ft lengths), including two HDMI… View this story

I’m not sure if NewEgg is just ramping up as Black Friday approaches, but they’re having a heck of a day when it comes to Home Theater deals.  First, as the morning/afternoon segment of their daily Shell Shocker available until 4 p.m. EST today, November 2, you can grab a new (not refurbished) Harmony 659 activity based remote for $39.99 with free shipping. This is a slightly older Harmony model and lacks the color touch screen and charging dock of the One and 900. That… View this story

Netflix’s Watch Instantly support in CE devices has been a recurring theme this week. Roku has announced two new Netflix-capable boxes. Sony will soon be adding it to the PS3. Nintendo will likely be following suit on the Wii or upcoming Wii HD. And Best Buy’s Insignia brand is even in on the action with its $99 Blu-ray player. But LG was the very first to bring Netflix support to a Blu-ray player, and one of the first to free Watch Instantly from the confines… View this story

Due to Halloween, doorbusters sales will start on Friday, Oct. 30 at 5 p.m. Not to be out-leaked by OfficeMax, the Black Friday ads from Sears have been posted on BlackFriday.info. Black Friday is on Nov. 27, 2009, and Sears has some great deals on consumer electronics and DIY products, including TVs, Blu-ray players, home theater systems,… View this story

The $99 mark has long been the mythic point-of-entry for the masses still sitting on the Blu-ray sideline.  While a few refurbished and extremely entry-level players have flirted with or crossed that threshold, we might finally be seeing some of the players that will really start big-time Blu-ray adoption.  Today’s deal is the newly released Insignia NS-BRDVD3 Blu-ray player, a Best Buy exclusive (since it’s their in-house brand) and currently available for $99 - down from the everyday $149 price.  What makes this cheap-o player… View this story

Have an older HTPC that seems to be on its last leg?  Won’t decode Blu-ray or those h.264 MKVs (that we know you obtained in a legal manner, of course)? For only $16.99 with free shipping you can upgrade your video card to an MSI Radeon 4350 video card capable of hardware-decoding pretty much anything that supports hardware-decoding, as well as shipping both audio and video out to your display or AVR via HDMI.  This is a low-profile, fanless (i.e. silent) card with 512mb of… View this story

We haven’t even reached Halloween yet and Black Friday deals are already beginning to leak. BlackFriday.info has posted deals from OfficeMax, receiving word from “a few anonymous sources” that the deals are real. (via Gizmodo) The Web site says that while the final version of the ad might change slightly, most of the items listed should be on sale. After looking over the deals, some immediate highlights include a $30 Memorex portable DVD player and a $150 Acer Aspire One Netbook. Here’s the list of… View this story

When I was a kid, during my long and often eventful summers, I watched a lot of Nickelodeon (unless Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade was on HBO). About once an hour they played an animated short called “The Cat Came Back,” which had a repetitive tune that was impossible to get out of your head once you’d heard it. It still pops into my head to this day, nearly 20 years later. The Polk Monitor 50 floorstanding speaker from Newegg makes me want to… View this story

It seems, these days, every device in your home can connect to a network in one form or fashion. Media players, televisions, refrigerators, coffee makers, toilet paper dispensers ... the list goes on and on.  Well, if you have a well-connected home, you should also have well-connected centralized storage to filter your media and other files out and about. NewEgg currently has the HP MediaSmart EX470 Windows Home Server (recertified), with 500GB of storage, 3 empty SATA bays, 4 USB ports, and 1 eSATA port… View this story

Halloween is right around the corner. Ghosts, ghouls, and the undead will soon be the norm outside every house with the front porch light on. In that spirit, I thought I’d resurrect a few past deals from the dead.  The first is Vann’s spectacular pricing on the Energy RC Mini and RC Mini CC speakers. The Mini, a high-quality, compact, 4” bookshelf with cherry veneer, is selling for $90/each, while the matching Mini CC center is going for $130/each.  Vann’s usually has great combo deals… View this story
