Pirate-Themed Theater

A bottle of rum may be enough of the pirate’s life for some. However, for Paul and Emily Konold, it’s all about the home theater.  On one of the Konolds’ yearly pilgrimages to Disneyland, Paul didn’t just have a good time—he had an epiphany. While taking a ride on the childhood favorite turned box office monster “Pirates of the Caribbean,” Paul came up with the idea to turn his home theater into an homage. “I have always loved that ride as a kid,” he says.… View this story

Ever wonder where Batman buys his theater equipment? You can stop scouring the web; Elite Home Theater Seating wants to make your superhero shopping experience a lot easier. The company just announced a new home theater line to accommodate those of you looking to add a Batcave into your home.  Sure, a lot of companies make black theater seats, but this is the kind that superheroes sit in—apparently. “Most of the seating commonly offered is very boring, overstuffed and traditional,” says company founder and CEO… View this story

There is an explanation for this, you know. —Ash, Alien, 1979 Indeed, there is an explanation for this spectacular sci-fi-themed theater, owned by self-proclaimed mad scientist, Dr. David Winn. “I love classic horror flicks and science fiction, and over the years I picked up some full size replicas at good prices,” says Winn. “I figured I needed a movie room to display them.” So with a little web research and the help of his wife and Scott Messenger of Austin, TX installation firm Escom, he… View this story

That terminator is out there. It can’t be bargained with. It can’t be reasoned with. It doesn’t feel pity, or remorse, or fear. That’s fine and dandy for the Terminator, but for Darren Mortensen, that mantra made for the perfect home theater—as well as the opportunity for a career change. When Mortensen first thought about creating his own home theater, he wasn’t working as a Christmas elf; he was a respiratory therapist, specializing in acute cardio-pulmonary support and trauma. A noble profession is no match… View this story

Just as Trekkies are passionate about everything Star Trek, readers of ElectronicHouse.com are passionate about home theater installations. Lately we’ve been seeing many comments, on both our website and others, questioning the authenticity of this Star Trek-themed home theater installation in Florida. Even though it earned honors from the Custom Electronic Design and Installation Association (CEDIA) earlier this year. We had the opportunity to talk to Acoustic Innovations president Jay Miller, whose company was in charge of the physical design, fabrication and installation, and let… View this story

If we were ranking the many “Star Trek” theaters that we’ve seen over the past few months, this Palm Beach County, FL home has what would be considered to be “The Next Generation” of the lot. This anonymous owner is without a doubt, a sci-fi buff, but being a “Trekkie” is only one aspect of his interests—the one that created a killer home theater. The owners had originally envisioned a traditional home theater. However, Jay Miller, president of Acoustic Innovations, noticed that their client was… View this story

You may have to shield your eyes from the ark, but this theater won’t melt your face—at least not in a bad way. About two years ago, Larry and Colleen Halliday were looking to add a little excitement to their home theater. They made a deal with installer Doug Charrois, who then called in the doctor—Dr. Indiana Jones. To many in the audiophile crowd, the Halliday’s equipment list wouldn’t be as coveted as the ark itself. The couple is more than satisfied though. It’s got… View this story

A long time ago in a home theater far, far away — well, outside of Seattle anyway — began one of the greatest “Star Wars” spectacles to ever exist outside the doors of Comic-Con. Super-fans Vic Wertz and Lisa Stevens used to run the Official Star Wars Fan Club and even the “Star Wars Insider” magazine. But even though they’re both out of that business now, they still pay homage to their dark lord and master each and every day — thanks to their incredibly… View this story

We could argue all day about who the best Starfleet commander was (at least some of us could), but when it comes down to it, all of their terms had to come to an end. For Tony Alleyne, it was time to hand his ship off to the next captain. Alleyne’s apartment, which was widely publicized due to the fact that he modeled it after “Star Trek: Voyager,” now has a new owner. After a remarkable 34 bids, it sold on eBay for $850,000. “Having… View this story

Where no man has gone before? Hardly. Gary Reighn had the skills to create his own “Star Trek”-themed home theater. Tony Alleyne transformed his entire apartment to look exactly like “Voyager.” How could anyone top the Trekkie-themed areas we’ve already seen? Well, Gary Sekulow found a way to add his own “Trek” twist. Instead of creating a killer replica of his favorite era of the long running sci-fi show, Sekulow relied on real props to make theater magic. Back in 2006, Sekulow purchased two original… View this story

As kids, we all created forts. If you were really stylin’, yours was probably made of cardboard and included your mom’s best (or worst) bedsheets. Tony Alleyne, however, is no kid and his detailed living space takes “forts” to a whole new level. North of London, on a private block in Hinckley, Leicestershire, UK, lies the most tricked out ‘Star Trek’-themed studio apartment in the world. Ring the doorbell, and you’ll be greeted by Patrick Stewart saying “Welcome to the 24th century.” The touch of… View this story

Gary Reighn has boldly gone where no one has gone before—or perhaps where only a few have gone. This Philadelphia-area homeowner not only built a home theater based on the command bridge of a popular science fiction show with a cult following—others have done that—but he also did it all himself. He’s responsible for everything from framing the walls to installing the equipment to crafting space view ports and simulated computer screens. And although he insists he is not a Trekkie who dresses up and… View this story
