Does the inconsistency of sound levels between your favorite programs and the commercials that interrupt your viewing habits frustrate you? If this problem bothers you enough to sound off about it, then SRS Labs is providing an outlet for you to have your say in a public venue.  The audio company, which provides electronically based psycho-acoustic processing solutions to the electronics manufacturing community, recently introduced a creative writing contest that focuses on the topic of “Loud Commercials/Volume Spikes.” The contest is asking frustrated consumers to… View this story

Small room got your audio hopes down? Perhaps there’s no good place to locate those killer speakers you’ve been dreaming of. Or maybe, like many of us, you have a very significant other with very significant needs—as in “don’t even think about bringing that big speaker near my family room.” It doesn’t have to be big loudspeaker or bust. Loudspeakers for stereo and home theater systems can be concealed in a variety of innovative ways. There are many different in-wall and in-ceiling speakers that fit… View this story

There are soundbars, and then there’s Leon Speakers’ new OS Soundbar. The OS stands for Over-Sized, and the folks at Leon must have been chuckling at least a little with such an understatement. This soundbar speaker is like a leaner version of the “2001: A Space Odyssey” monolith. As with other Horizon Series soundbars, Leon’s OS speakers can be custom-built to match the width of your screen. In this case, the company’s angled toward those who have behemoths like the 100-plus inch LCDs and plasmas… View this story

Monitor Audio’s Radius family of speakers already mixes performance, convenience and sharp looks. The company’s new R-One-HD soundbar simply rolls it up into one big front-channel cabinet. The latest entry into the emerging world of single-speaker soundbar solutions, Monitor’s R-One-HD takes the left channel, right and center and puts them all in a single slim, rectangular cabinet that can go above or below your flat-panel TV. The R-One-HD takes some design and technological cues from the other Radius members, but this one’s for you if… View this story

Single-speaker solutions and distributed audio are making their way throughout your house to give your primary and secondary TVs a boost, and let you route your favorite tunes to more than your main media room. Phase Technology’s serving both demands with highlights from its CES 2009 introductions—the Teatro soundbar, and the dARTS multiroom audio solution. Soundbars are seemingly everywhere these days. Phase Tech’s Teatro V-3.0 and Teatro PC-3.0 tweak the solution by featuring drivers to emphasize particular frequencies that widen the soundstage. There’s also a… View this story

Sharp certainly didn’t disappoint with its product unveilings during its press conference here at CES 2009. We’ll start with the AQUOS BD-MPC40 and BD-MPC30 HTIBs, which both include a Blu-ray player, an amplifier, five speakers (one center, two front and two rear) and one subwoofer. Both systems offer 720W of power and 5.1-channel surround sound. The BD-MPC40 features black wooden cabinet speakers, while the BD-MPC30 has speakers with a black synthetic finish. Each six-channel HTIB offers Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, as well as… View this story

Polk doesn’t seem to be giving up on packing sound into one speaker. The latest addition to their SurroundBar line will soon be the SurroundBar SDA Instant Home Theater (IHT). What gives this unit its IHT status is that it comes with a wireless subwoofer, making home theater as easy as adding a TV. “The market has been calling for a solution as straightforward as this one,” says Mark Suskind, VP of Polk’s product line management. “Until now there have been too many compromises needed… View this story

There are plenty of speakers designed to sit below your flat-panel TV, and usually they’re known as soundbars. The new Z-Base 550 from ZVOX was designed to literally sit below the TV—as in, you can place your LCD stand and all right on top of it. Huh? Yup, the Z-Base 550 packs speakers, amplification, virtual surround technology and a powered subwoofer into a slim cabinet that can support flat panels mainly between 32 and 47 diagonal inches. It’s pretty simple to give your TV audio… View this story

Integrated sound systems for your iPod (or, gasp, other portable music players) are everywhere these days. But when it comes to Danish speaker manufacturer Artcoustic, the aesthetics are going to be a little different than your average system. The result for Artcoustic is its Superstar all-in-one music center, a single stereo speaker that will handle your digital sources like iPod and iPhone, as well as Sonos, Squeeze Box, Bose, Bang and Olufsen and others. Like most of the Artcoustic offerings, the Superstar is meant to… View this story

Deflation may be punishing the economy overall, but it promises terrific bargains for consumers planning a TV buy for the Super Bowl. This week, Vizio took the wraps off a 55-inch LCD TV that will carry a suggested retail price of $1,999 when it ships to dealers in January. But expect the street price to drop below that before the Super Bowl kickoff, according to Ken Lowe, co-founder and vp of business development for Vizio. Despite the economy-friendly price, Vizio hasn’t skimped on features. Try… View this story

Sonance SM55 SST

Sonance is one speaker stronger, thanks to the SM55 SST. The new single-stereo model will actually double the size of the company’s Surface Mount selection—which means now there are two! The single-speaker solution is designed for situations where an array of speakers won’t fit, but you can’t do an in-wall or in-ceiling install. The unit includes a dual-voice coil 5.25-inch carbon fiber cone woofer with two flanking, wide-range 1-inch silk dome ferrofluid-cooled tweeters. Just like the existing Surface Mount SM55 unit, all you need is… View this story

Canton Sound Bar CD 90 SB
Rachel Cericola

The soundbar is the newest boom in audio, allowing for full surround sound from a single cabinet. The latest is Canton’s Sound Bar CD 90 SB, which features three individually isolated two-way speakers in one slick cabinet. The idea is that the one speaker can nestle nicely under your flat screen and deliver sound that you might expect from separate left, right and center-channel speakers. The left and right speaker channels each have a 1/2-inch tweeter, a 3-inch woofer, and a 3.9-kHz crossover network. The… View this story
