During a recent trade show, I was re-introduced to the idea of mounting built-in speakers close to the floor. I had seen it done before in homes that we’ve featured online and in Electronic House magazine, but hadn’t really stopped to consider the merits this unconventional speaker placement. It’s easy to understand why you’d want a speaker mounted in the ceiling or in the wall: The sound hits you right where your ears are. So why on earth would you want to install your speakers… View this story

Small room got your audio hopes down? Perhaps there’s no good place to locate those killer speakers you’ve been dreaming of. Or maybe, like many of us, you have a very significant other with very significant needs—as in “don’t even think about bringing that big speaker near my family room.” It doesn’t have to be big loudspeaker or bust. Loudspeakers for stereo and home theater systems can be concealed in a variety of innovative ways. There are many different in-wall and in-ceiling speakers that fit… View this story

Atlantic Technology has unveiled the 1400 SR-z, a dipole/bipole surround speaker designed for height-speaker channel applications. Due to its compact size, the 1400 SR-z can be mounted above a system’s front speakers, which Atlantic says makes the 1400 SR-z “ideal” for use in home theaters with Dolby ProLogic IIz (the technology debuted in Onkyo’s new TX-SR607 receiver). The 1400 SR-z is compatible with any Atlantic system without encountering soundfield discontinuity effects. Atlantic says the speaker is adept in either the side or rear surround channel… View this story

Smaller, design-friendly speakers are in these days, especially for multipurpose media rooms and to that end Anthony Gallo Acoustics is just having a ball. The company’s spherical speaker designs offer multipurpose and flexible sound for just about any room—with the latest balls of fury coming in the form of the Strada Center and Strada loudspeakers that are additions to Anthony Gallo’s Reference Series. They provide multiple mounting options without being too obtrusive in your room and still delivering big sound, aided by the company’s S2… View this story

Monitor Audio’s Radius family of speakers already mixes performance, convenience and sharp looks. The company’s new R-One-HD soundbar simply rolls it up into one big front-channel cabinet. The latest entry into the emerging world of single-speaker soundbar solutions, Monitor’s R-One-HD takes the left channel, right and center and puts them all in a single slim, rectangular cabinet that can go above or below your flat-panel TV. The R-One-HD takes some design and technological cues from the other Radius members, but this one’s for you if… View this story

Looks like we are getting more love from iLuv. These people sure know how to crank out products. This time, they are pumping out the i9500, a slick looking hi-fi system that clings to your wall like a spider monkey. It’s a lot less messy, though, and provides a spot for your CDs, radio, iPhone and iPod to come together in (and for) musical harmony. It looks nice, and even has an SD card slot and a USB port. Other features include timer features, 32… View this story

With the Consumer Electronics Show just a few short weeks away, we are starting to see a flood of products coming for next year. If 2009 is your year for on-wall speakers, you might want to check out Jamo’s A 804. An array of speakers around the floor give you an extra spot to put the mail, but Jamo says this slick, slender unit can get the job done, without sucking up a lot of space. Also, it’s space on your wall, so you will… View this story

If you enjoyed Canton’s previous generation of GLE loudspeakers, you’ll really dig the new digs of the latest generation of the GLEs from the German manufacturer. The series features six models—two floorstanders, two compact speakers, a horizontal center channel and a shallow on-wall speaker. In line with the demand for better aesthetics for speakers’ to complement living room, family room and media room decors, the GLE’s offer Canton’s new “Mocca” bicolor finish option—a cabinet veneer of African wenge and glass white baffle. Inside the speakers… View this story

Integrated sound systems for your iPod (or, gasp, other portable music players) are everywhere these days. But when it comes to Danish speaker manufacturer Artcoustic, the aesthetics are going to be a little different than your average system. The result for Artcoustic is its Superstar all-in-one music center, a single stereo speaker that will handle your digital sources like iPod and iPhone, as well as Sonos, Squeeze Box, Bose, Bang and Olufsen and others. Like most of the Artcoustic offerings, the Superstar is meant to… View this story

So you’ve bought a beautiful flat-panel TV—be it a plasma or LCD—and you want to mount it on the wall, of course, so you and guests can stare in awe of it. And to make your room look great, too. But you also want to appeal to your design sense (or maybe your wife’s), so you can’t just have any old tower speaker flank the TV as part of a 5.1 surround system. You need something with a bit more flair, and something that will… View this story

The center channel in your surround-sound system usually does the bulk of the heavy lifting, whether it’s all of that movie dialogue or music vocals that are being pumped out. You’ll want a pretty powerful speaker doing the job of center channel, and MartinLogan is lending a hand with its new “Feature” model. The Feature is an electrostatic design that is internally powered with a high-resolution 150-watt switching amplifier. The internal amp also gives you a bit of flexibility and reduced wire clutter because you… View this story
