General attitudes toward speaker aesthetics can generally be broken down into two categories: those who don’t mind (or actually desire) seeing their speakers and having them be seen, and those who would just as soon stick a toilet in the middle of their living room and sully their décor with a floorstanding loudspeaker array. The latter group has been the target demographic of in-wall speaker manufacturers for years. But even in-walls take a measureable toll on a room’s aesthetics, marring an otherwise pristine surface with… View this story

Speaker nerds now have another outlet to scarf up MartinLogan speakers. Instead of calling a dealer, they can just plop down in front of the computer and let their fingers do the walking. MartinLogan just announced that they have their own little corner of Amazon.com. Currently, there are 15 products available (although one isn’t in stock), ranging from stands to in-walls to subwoofers. However, you won’t find every one of the manufacturer’s offerings, just the MartinLogan Design Series. “Many people still think speakers look like… View this story

Atlantic Technology has this THX thing down pretty well. The company’s now shipping its THX Select2 certified IWCB-727 in-wall speaker system, which it says is the first loudspeaker in any format to have earned the new certification that ups the ante on the THX Select standards. Now that’s truly select company. Atlantic Technology recently delivered the THX Ultra certified IWTS-30 SR surround speaker. The IWCB-727 features proprietary technology like Atlantic’s Low Resonance Tweeter (LRT) and Directional Vector Control (DVC), which electronically directs the soundfield when… View this story

Just when you thought insane home theaters couldn’t get any crazier, Goldmund has gone ahead and added a new version of its Epilogue speaker system to its Goldmund Media Room. If you don’t know about Goldmund, it’s the super luxury Swiss manufacturer that created a $300,000 theater system last year with up to 128 audio channels, a $17K Blu-ray player earlier this year, and features a flagship $300K reference turntable. Goldmund must love that $300,000 mark, because that’s what the Epilogue systems start at. The… View this story

To fully immerse yourself in a movie, the impact of your surround speakers can enhance the experience more than you might expect. They might not carry the workload of a center channel or front speakers, but your theater or media room will see a noticeable difference with a good set of surrounds. Atlantic Technology has announced two new dipole/bipole switchable in-wall surrounds to help fit the bill. The THX Ultra Certified IWTS-30 SR and the (not THX Certified) IWTS-14 SR. Both come as dual two-way… View this story

Living in the country suits the owners of this custom-crafted theater. “They can get away from the noise of the city, sit on the back porch and gaze at the stars,” says A/V systems designer Harry Blanchard of HiFi House Group in Broomall, PA. In keeping with the owners’ desire for peaceful living, Blanchard and his team designed the 375-square-foot, basement- level theater to be totally soundproof. Absolutely no sound seeps out of the space. “Our soundproofing technique worked so well that even when nothing… View this story

The owner of this theater plays in an R&B band, so he’s developed a great ear for audio. When he contacted Gramophone of Timonium, MD, to incorporate a dedicated theater into his newly built 8,000-square-foot home, his quest for audio excellence came as no surprise to the company’s team of custom electronic designers. But before Gramophone could install a single piece of acoustical paneling, they had to completely reconfigure the layout of the room. “We were introduced to the project during the framing stage,” says… View this story

Q. Can in-wall speakers deliver the same sound quality as floorstanding speakers? And can in-ceiling speakers deliver the same impact at in-wall speakers? -Johnny, Dallas, TX A. This is a very common question, primarily because it is what customers want to hear. “Give me back my floor space, hide it in the wall, but keep the quality high.” In general, in-wall speakers have dramatically improved, but only a few can perform as well as floor standing speakers. Those that can are often larger than people… View this story

If you’re replacing a veteran with a rookie, it had better be a blue-chipper that’s ready to step to the plate. Atlantic Technology’s new in-wall loudspeaker, the IWTS-30 LCR, certainly looks ready to step into the role of flagship speaker model. The company is replacing its flagship THX-certified IWTS-20 LCR after holding that spot for eight years. The new in-wall has garnered the THX Ultra2 certification and will be available in May. The IWTS-30 LCR is meant for use as a front left, right or… View this story

Over the years there has become less and less of a sacrifice in sound quality when choosing architectural speakers over floorstanding speakers for your entertainment system. In-walls and in-ceiling models offer superb audio these days, to go with the unobtrusive aesthetics that people love of them. Technology like that used by Monitor Audio in its latest in-wall offerings firmly establishes them as ideal architectural models. The company’s W280LCR and W380LCR in-wall speakers feature a flexible three-way design incorporating Monitor Audio’s inverted dual concentric (IDC) driver… View this story

Sure in-wall speakers allow you to conserve floor space. However, it’s not exactly a free-for-all behind that Sheetrock. With all of the spidey webs, studs and random candy wrappers stuffed inside there (it happens!), sometimes that hidden space can be just as precious. Now TruAudio has a line to accommodate those tight areas inside the wall. Designed for in-ceiling installs, the latest in the Revolve line includes an assortment of 6.5-inch speakers, versus the line’s traditional 8-inchers. Smaller space, however, doesn’t mean the sound suffers.… View this story

Now you can afford to have more than creepy crawlies in your walls. Atlantic Technology just announced the IWTS-4LCR, an in-wall loudspeaker that can rock the house, without cluttering it. The company says that this unit is a bargain at $250 a pop, because it’s got their Low Resonance Tweeter (LRT) technology. LRT boasts a wider midrange dispersion than most in-walls, meaning an easier installation. Features include a 1-inch silk dome tweeter and a 6.5-inch Graphite-Loaded Homopolymer (GLH) woofer, with bass reproduction down to 57Hz.… View this story
