Triad Speakers is set to deliver its new DesignerSeries Speakers that can be completely hidden and sealed behind walls or ceilings. The line of “invisible” speakers features three mono versions and two stereo models that can produce maximum sound pressure levels up of 105dB. The speakers can be used for a variety of installation scenarios, including multiroom audio, home theater rear surrounds, and environmentally-challenging situations like wet and humid pool areas and bathrooms. Triad employs power-coated aluminum frames, a rigid aluminum honeycomb core with paper… View this story

Small room got your audio hopes down? Perhaps there’s no good place to locate those killer speakers you’ve been dreaming of. Or maybe, like many of us, you have a very significant other with very significant needs—as in “don’t even think about bringing that big speaker near my family room.” It doesn’t have to be big loudspeaker or bust. Loudspeakers for stereo and home theater systems can be concealed in a variety of innovative ways. There are many different in-wall and in-ceiling speakers that fit… View this story

The economy has shown signs of recovery. Housing and oil prices have begun to stabilize, and some economists are predicting a turnaround later this year. Consumers may soon start spending money again on their favorite activities, including home theater and music. Architectural loudspeakers can be a secret weapon that could win a share of that spending, as they’re ideal for multiroom audio systems and dedicated theater rooms in which you don’t want to “see the sound” but still enjoy it. Architectural loudspeakers are made up… View this story

Thinking about putting in-wall speakers in an exterior wall, or installing in-ceiling speakers in an insulated ceiling? Don’t do it, says green designer and consultant Michael Anschel of North Minneapolis-based Otogawa-Anschel Design-Build and presenter of a recent CEDIA webinar, “Green Ideas to Stay Competitive.” “It is a terrible idea to put a hole in any insulated surface, especially a ceiling, unless you have to,” Anschel says. The reason is airflow. Speakers aren’t good insulators, so you’ll be losing warm air out of that hole in… View this story

Demonstrating the true effect of in-wall speaker prowess can be difficult when your speakers aren’t actually in the walls. It’s a good thing Jon Herron carries a traveling kit to replicate the experience as best as possible when he brings around his Wisdom Audio products and associated gear. Herron paid a visit to our Electronic House office recently to immerse us in Wisdom’s Sage Series—both musically and architecturally. Architecturally, because the Sage Series isn’t your typical speaker. The planar magnetic driver array can be configured… View this story

Architectural (in-wall and in-ceiling) loudspeakers have become the leading product sellers for many companies. Their popularity is driven by the desire to be heard and not seen. It’s much easier to get the wife’s approval when the speakers are blending and not clashing with a room’s decor. Professional electronics installers have responded to this trend by pushing their manufacturing partners to develop more ergonomically friendly, better sounding solutions. Through all of this, several manufacturers have emerged with “go to” products for installers.  Here are the… View this story

We hope your custom electronics professional is able to find the new speakers from Sonance when he opens the box—they’ll be part of the Invisible Speaker Series, so it could be tricky. Sonance, which specializes in architectural loudspeakers that blend in with your walls and ceilings, is now shipping its new Invisible line of products, which include the SA3 and SA1.5 omnidirectional loudspeakers and the SAW subwoofer. All three are highlighted by perfectly flat, acoustically transparent vellum overlay, which can be painted or even wallpapered… View this story

Q. What is the best way to paint the grille of an in-wall speaker to match the wall color? I don’t want the holes to get all clogged with paint. - Keith, South Carolina A. Here are some tips and tricks, courtesy the pros at CE Pro.com. AudioPerfection Inc: A foam brush with very little paint and about 4 coats has always seemed to work well. Custom Wiring Concepts: You can have wall paint put into a spray can. However, the mix consistency needs to… View this story

Wisdom’s new in-walls probably won’t make you smarter. However, these units should allow you to rock a little harder than usual. The company says that the L150i is the tallest line source in Wisdom’s award-winning Sage series. Each unit includes two 76-inch tall aluminum cabinets per channel, with a woofer cabinet crossing over to the mid/high-frequency planar magnetic line source cabinet at 275 Hz. The low frequency cabinet within the L150i incorporates 12 six-inch high operating pressure woofers. Each woofer cabinet is driven by a… View this story

Genelec has the active loudspeaker technology thing down pat. The company’s been making active speakers for three decades, but it hadn’t created an active in-wall subwoofer until now. Following the custom install trend of in-wall everything these days—the common “I want to hear it but not see any of the technology” plea—Genelec has introduced its AIWS5041A Active In-Wall Subwoofer, available this fall (no pricing listed yet). These subs will give plenty of boom to your big theaters. They’re rated to handle room volumes up to… View this story

In-wall speakers have come a long way. They look great and can sound just as good as free-standing models. Still, if you look hard enough, they are noticeable. Some speaker manufacturers believe they can do better at blending speakers into the home decor—and they have, by creating models that are completely invisible. One of the pioneers of the invisible speaker category is Sound Advance. The company’s flat-panel loudspeaker technology was acquired by Sonance a few years ago, giving Sonance an even broader lineup of speakers.… View this story

OK, take that image you have of a big black subwoofer box that hogs space in your media room, and chuck it out the window. Just as loudspeakers have migrated into our walls and ceilings, subwoofers are changing with the times, too. One of the coolest examples I’ve seen in this area is the BGX-4850 in-wall subwoofer system from BG Radia, which I had the good fortune of hearing at the CEDIA Expo 2008. The design is unlike anything I’d seen (or heard, I guess)—it’s… View this story
