Do You Really Need FiOS?

In the beginning, DSL was a path out of slow dial-up speeds, then the cable companies developed HFC systems using DOCSIS for Internet. Now, Verizon claims FiOS is the fastest Internet you’ll ever need. You gotta admit, these guys are great with the acronyms, but what do they mean? And how much speed do you really need? Though modern cable systems send their signals on fiber as far as each neighborhood, they use the older coax for the “last-mile” to each home. This is called…

FiOS Intros New Routers, Faster Speeds
Gordon Jones

Today’s article comparing the various Internet/Phone/TV bundles highlights the obvious - that is, ISPs like Charter, Comcast, AT&T and Verizon are fighting hard for your business. Indeed, barely a week passes without an announcement from one of the players touting a new pricing tier or freebie promotion. A recent announcement from Verizon however is somewhat different. While it falls into my favorite category - faster speeds - it has nothing to do with Verizon’s servers or much-envied fiber optic lines. Instead, the FiOS giant is…

Verizon is about to pump up the power of its FiOS service. The company just announced that more than 10 million homes and business can soon experience download speeds up to 50 megabits per second (Mbps) and upload speeds up to 20 Mbps. The premium service, which costs $140 a month, was previously offered in just a few areas. However, starting next week, the new speeds will be available in all 16 states where FiOS is currently offered. “The Verizon network is delivering broadband speeds…

ISPs: The Best Speed for Your Money

The World Wide Web is the place to be, and the options for getting there have never been greater. We’ve investigated the deals, the speeds, and the availability to help consumers choose a high-speed bandwagon to jump on. Comparison Points When placing an internet service provider under the microscope, we’re looking for a few things, including price, speed, and availability. Today’s ISPs are giving consumers a wide range of choices regarding the first two categories. It is not uncommon to see two or three “packages”…

Director Michael Bay, Technology Prophet?

I saw the new Verizon FiOS commercial last night, and man is it awesome! A new campaign by Verizon kicked off with blockbuster movie director/producer Michael Bay repeatedly telling us how awesome FiOS is and how it blows away cable—and yes, things are being blown up in the background (awesome!) in what’s actually a pretty funny self-parody of Bay. I don’t know if Bay is becoming the next Mark Cuban when it comes to preaching technology, but he’s well on his way. Bay’s movies may…

Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) is an up-and-coming technology with lots of promise. Ironically, it’s the smaller regional telecommunications companies that are making IPTV waves in mostly local markets, although at least one national company has big-time plans to replace your current digital service with their digital solution. IPTV to Your TV – How it Works Never heard of IPTV? Even if you haven’t, chances are you’ve used it, or something like it. In fact, anyone who has ever accessed their digital television service’s Video on…

How do you get your high-definition TV? Apparently, a lot more of you have steered toward Verizon’s Fios TV service. The company announced on Monday that it surpassed the one million subscriber mark in January (it passed the mark for its Internet service last June). That makes Verizon the 10th largest cable provider in the U.S., the company says, a little bit behind No. 9 Mediacom Communications. The service is available in parts of California, Delaware, Florida, Indiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon,…

Choosing a home’s television service provider gets a little more difficult each year. Emerging technologies, changing rates and packages, and access limitations all factor into this battle royal between old – and new - enemies. There are some basics you can expect from everyone, like DVRs, HD channels, and bundled internet service. But take a closer look and you’ll see some differences that may push one of them over the top and into your home. Cable That the word “cable” is often used to refer…

The Techno-Gurus might be coming to a neighborhood near you. That’s the name given to the tech-experts (Brian, Lloyd, and Yue) sent by “MyHome 2.0” - the tech-heavy reality show - to upgrade a lucky home to 21st-century status. So far five lucky families have been given a tech makeover, and episodes are viewable on the website. Folks in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh can watch the show on TV, too. The show premise is pretty straight-forward and cool. Needy families (as in, they need some tech…

Verizon wants to satisfy those looking for more content to show off high-def holiday TV purchases. The service provider just announced HD VOD (high-definition video-on-demand) content is now available through its FiOS TV service. Verizon will initially offer 75 titles, including summer eye-candy “Transformers,” the animated penguin flick “Surf’s Up” and the Richard Gere dramedy, “The Hoax.” There will also be a few HD freebies, such as MTV videos. “Whether they’re buying their first HDTV or their fourth this holiday season, HD customers always want…

For those of you on the fence about whether to invest in FiOS, soon they might be the masters of all high-def programming. The all-encompassing service provider just announced plans to increase its high-definition programming lineup to 150 channels by the end of 2008. “Once more, Verizon leads the way,” Shawn Strickland, Verizon’s vice president of video solutions, said in a statement. Tell that to the 700,000 customers that were watching baseball playoffs without HD! The company has recently been under fire for not adding…

Can FIOS Break Cable’s Stranglehold?
Steven Castle

You’ve probably heard that telephone giant Verizon is rolling out its TV services with plans of running high-speed fiber-optic lines to every home. This should be a welcome change for anyone paying a monthly cable TV bill. Only Verizon has a little problem. Wireline TV services often require licensing at the municipal level, and that means negotiating contracts with many cities and towns where Verizon wants to offer TV service. But Verizon doesn’t want to take years haggling with each municipality. It wants statewide franchises…
