Leave it up to a renowned Boston-area chef to rock out to speakers with ‘Boston’ in their name. The Blue Ginger in Wellesley, MA, underwent an expansion earlier this year, and chef Ming Tsai’s lauded restaurant turned to Boston Acoustics to add some music to the atmosphere. Boston Acoustics turned to custom installer Andrew Himmer and Audio Video Experience of Hampton Falls, NH, to outfit the restaurant with 28 in-ceiling speakers—24 PRi685CV models and four PRi85SubCV models. “In creating our new space for Blue Ginger,… View this story

Subwoofers sure ain’t what they used to be. Yeah, you can still get that giant cube subwoofer that doubles as a solid furniture stand in your media room. You can even get some sleeker models these days that stow unobtrusively in the walls or behind the couch, tucked out of the way. Then there’s Sonance’s BPS-1 Bandpass Subwoofer. It’s from the same company that’s found architecturally pleasing ways to hide the rest of your speakers so you can turn home theater surround sound into a… View this story

Look up in the sky, it’s a bird, it’s a light, it’s—a speaker? SpeakerCraft just announced its super-small NEAT 3 in-walls, which are designed to look just like the miniature can of a light. I would probably rather look at a speaker than a light, but the idea is that the unit only takes up a small amount of space, while blending nicely into any background. “Looking at the popularity of small flush-mounted spotlights inspired us to design a loudspeaker to match,” says Jeremy Burkhardt,… View this story

The shape of in-wall and in-ceiling speakers has shifted from traditional round and rectangular forms to the perfect square. Make no mistake: round and rectangular speakers are still a popular choice and look great in any room; square simply affords trend-setting homeowners another stylish alternative. “Architects and interior designers were starting to ask for square speakers,” says Buzz Delano, sales director at Sonance, a leading manufacturer of built-in speakers. The company offers several square models in two of its most popular lines: Visual Performance and… View this story

The best speaker option for most kitchens is a round in-ceiling speaker. Fitted with a white grille, it can blend right in with the kitchen’s recessed light fixtures. Speakers in Sonance’s new line of in-ceiling speakers are even harder to discern. Just 0.20 inches of trim gives the Visual Performance speakers a clean, sleek appearance that befits the modern lines of a kitchen. Another good choice for a kitchen is a dual-voice coil speaker. This one speaker effectively does the job of two stereo speakers,… View this story

Speaker nerds now have another outlet to scarf up MartinLogan speakers. Instead of calling a dealer, they can just plop down in front of the computer and let their fingers do the walking. MartinLogan just announced that they have their own little corner of Amazon.com. Currently, there are 15 products available (although one isn’t in stock), ranging from stands to in-walls to subwoofers. However, you won’t find every one of the manufacturer’s offerings, just the MartinLogan Design Series. “Many people still think speakers look like… View this story

The horns are blowing with the sound of THX Ultra2 certification, and they’re coming from the ceiling. That’s Klipsch’s technology at work, as it has debuted its KL-7502-THX LCR and KS-7502-THX surround models of in-ceiling loudspeakers with such certification. And since it’s Klipsch, the patented horn-loaded design is hard at work here. According to the company, the in-ceiling surround is the market’s first THX Ultra2-certified such model. The KL-7502-THX can deliver quality front-channel sound as the left, center or right speaker, or you can also… View this story

Artcoustic has turned a nifty triple play with its new Diablo Target loudspeaker. The speaker can work well as an on-wall model, be installed as an in-ceiling, or even play well outdoors as an all-weather speaker. With compact dimensions of 8 x 8 inches, at just 3 inches deep, the versatile Diablo Target won’t stand in the way of letting you enjoy your existing room decor. The square-shaped metal grille hides the two-way setup, and you can choose one of eight colors to help the… View this story

Q. Can in-wall speakers deliver the same sound quality as floorstanding speakers? And can in-ceiling speakers deliver the same impact at in-wall speakers? -Johnny, Dallas, TX A. This is a very common question, primarily because it is what customers want to hear. “Give me back my floor space, hide it in the wall, but keep the quality high.” In general, in-wall speakers have dramatically improved, but only a few can perform as well as floor standing speakers. Those that can are often larger than people… View this story

Q. Can you recommend an in-ceiling speaker for my 6.1 theater room? I would like a mid to high level speaker. Have you ever heard of TruAudio speakers. How good are they? - Rohan This is a difficult thing to do, first, without knowing anything else about your system and environment and second, because there are many very good speaker manufacturers out there. Every custom dealer has their own speaker lines that they support. For instance, the two main speaker lines at our company are… View this story

Sure in-wall speakers allow you to conserve floor space. However, it’s not exactly a free-for-all behind that Sheetrock. With all of the spidey webs, studs and random candy wrappers stuffed inside there (it happens!), sometimes that hidden space can be just as precious. Now TruAudio has a line to accommodate those tight areas inside the wall. Designed for in-ceiling installs, the latest in the Revolve line includes an assortment of 6.5-inch speakers, versus the line’s traditional 8-inchers. Smaller space, however, doesn’t mean the sound suffers.… View this story

Look up in the sky… it’s a bird, it’s a plane, no wait… it’s just new ceiling speakers. Hey—made you look though. Sort of hard not to, with one of Niles‘ new ceiling speakers blasting. The company just announced four new models for its Ceiling Mount, Directed SoundField speaker line. The new 7-inch models include two center-channel units and two designed specifically for special effects. Each of the units include Niles’ patented pivoting woofers and tweeters, which allows your installer to tilt each unit up… View this story
