Where Can I Place the Center Channel in a 5.1 System?
CE Pro

Q. Can a center channel in a 5.1 system be placed in the ceiling over the screen pointing downward, or does it have to be placed underneath the screen facing outward? - Clint, Bowie, Md Rob Schultz of Inspired Electronics offers this advice: The ideal place for a center channel is actually in the middle of the screen. Of course, that’s impossible unless you put a speaker behind an acoustically transparent screen. The next best place is immediately above or below the screen. The reason…

Robert Archer

The economy has shown signs of recovery. Housing and oil prices have begun to stabilize, and some economists are predicting a turnaround later this year. Consumers may soon start spending money again on their favorite activities, including home theater and music. Architectural loudspeakers can be a secret weapon that could win a share of that spending, as they’re ideal for multiroom audio systems and dedicated theater rooms in which you don’t want to “see the sound” but still enjoy it. Architectural loudspeakers are made up…

At first glance, this kitchen might look like any other kitchen. But what’s under the surface makes for an incredible recipe, cooked up by custom electronics pro Audio Video Concepts. The kitchen starts with one part audio, which is supplied by a Niles GXR2 multizone receiver and a pair of Niles CM710 ceiling mount speakers. These speakers are controlled by a Niles display keypad. If the chef needs a remote closer in the kitchen, he or she can use the i-remote. From these controls, the…

Green Design Tip: Don’t Cut Exterior Walls
Steven Castle

Thinking about putting in-wall speakers in an exterior wall, or installing in-ceiling speakers in an insulated ceiling? Don’t do it, says green designer and consultant Michael Anschel of North Minneapolis-based Otogawa-Anschel Design-Build and presenter of a recent CEDIA webinar, “Green Ideas to Stay Competitive.” “It is a terrible idea to put a hole in any insulated surface, especially a ceiling, unless you have to,” Anschel says. The reason is airflow. Speakers aren’t good insulators, so you’ll be losing warm air out of that hole in…

Bowers and Wilkins (B&W) has introduced its XT 8 mid-sized tower speaker at CES 2009 in Las Vegas. It uses proprietary FST (fixed-suspension transducer) technology for its mid-frequency accuracy. It also has a B&W Nautilus tweeter “pod” on the top, a metal-dome high-frequency driver that helps prevent acoustic diffraction. The XT 8 features twin 5-inch woofers and uses paper/Kevlar composite with bottom-octave extension of 34Hz. Available finishes: satin brushed aluminum or gloss black aluminum exteriors with black grilles. B&W’s XT 8 will ship in Q1.…

Leave it up to a renowned Boston-area chef to rock out to speakers with ‘Boston’ in their name. The Blue Ginger in Wellesley, MA, underwent an expansion earlier this year, and chef Ming Tsai’s lauded restaurant turned to Boston Acoustics to add some music to the atmosphere. Boston Acoustics turned to custom installer Andrew Himmer and Audio Video Experience of Hampton Falls, NH, to outfit the restaurant with 28 in-ceiling speakers—24 PRi685CV models and four PRi85SubCV models. “In creating our new space for Blue Ginger,…

Subwoofers sure ain’t what they used to be. Yeah, you can still get that giant cube subwoofer that doubles as a solid furniture stand in your media room. You can even get some sleeker models these days that stow unobtrusively in the walls or behind the couch, tucked out of the way. Then there’s Sonance’s BPS-1 Bandpass Subwoofer. It’s from the same company that’s found architecturally pleasing ways to hide the rest of your speakers so you can turn home theater surround sound into a…

SpeakerCraft Announces NEAT In-Ceiling Speaker
Rachel Cericola

Look up in the sky, it’s a bird, it’s a light, it’s—a speaker? SpeakerCraft just announced its super-small NEAT 3 in-walls, which are designed to look just like the miniature can of a light. I would probably rather look at a speaker than a light, but the idea is that the unit only takes up a small amount of space, while blending nicely into any background. “Looking at the popularity of small flush-mounted spotlights inspired us to design a loudspeaker to match,” says Jeremy Burkhardt,…
