Want to toss out that old CRT TV—or any other old electronics—but you don’t know how? Yep, in some states it’s illegal to toss those old TVs in the landfill. They contain lead and other toxins that can leach into groundwater. Some states have laws that mandate that manufacturers take responsibility for recycling (or e-cycling) old TVs and other electronics. Massachusetts is considering one this week. Eighteen states and New York City already have e-cycling laws, with programs in place or about to start, including… View this story

Sony Style is taking the legwork out of recycling by offering customers the opportunity to have their old televisions hauled away and responsibly recycled. The hitch: you must use Sony’s premier in-home delivery and installation service when purchasing a 32-inch diagonal or larger new Sony Bravia LCD television at a Sony Style store or direct at sonystyle.com. Sony’s premier in-home installation service will run you $400. As part of the new Green Glove service, Sony will deliver, unpack and set up your new Bravia TV—and… View this story

If you’ve shopped for TVs lately, you don’t need me to tell you that thin is in. Those bulky and obscenely-heavy CRT sets of yesteryear are increasingly hard to find and in their place we have an endless parade of slim plasma and LCD flat panels. Short-depth DLP and LCD-based rear-projection televisions (or “microdisplays”) represent an attractive and high-value alternative, but what you gain in savings you lose in floor space since these displays are rarely wall-mountable. Finally there’s the mighty front projector – the… View this story

Have you figured out if all of your TVs will be ready when the FCC flips the switch from analog to digital next February? Nielsen Media Research—you know, the guys who put out the all-important Nielsen ratings measuring how many people watch the TV programs—found that about 10 million households are “completely unready” for the transition. The research, reported by The New York Times, cited that 9.4 percent of U.S. households would have all of their TVs go dark by the time of the transition… View this story

Still watching TV on a CRT? Maybe you have one you’d like mounted in the bathroom, kitchen or bedroom? North American Cable Equipment has introduced its Cabletronix line of wall and ceiling mounting systems for CRTs. The CT-TVB line supports displays of 14 to 29 inches, with load capacities of 66 to 165 pounds, the company says. The CT-TVB201 and 202 models are wall mounts, while the CT-TVB203 and 204 are ceiling mounts. The tray-style CT-TVB304 and CT-TVB306 feature 360-degree swivels. All CT-TVB mounts allow… View this story

If this were a musical, we’d sing, “1080p is the word, is the word that you heard ... 1080p is the way we are feeling.” Never mind that 1080p is not a word at all but four numbers and a letter signifying “Full HD” resolution of 1,080 lines, progressively scanned. The point is that 1080p is the big new thing. Or, in musical terms, “It’s got groove, it’s got meaning.” And it’s coming to a lot of HDTVs near you. Only you’ll still have to… View this story

Here’s our quick look at the terms and technology in today’s televisions. LCD Stands for: Liquid crystal display. What the &#!!?: It’s what you have in your flat-panel computer display. Available in: Flat-panel TVs, rear-projection sets, some front projectors. How it works: Crystals in a liquid are activated by an electrical current. What’s so good about it: Provides a bright, high-contrast image. What’s not so good: Viewing lower-resolution images can sometimes be like looking through a screen door. DLP Stands for: Digital light processing. What… View this story

Shopping for a television used to be easy. You’d go to the store, find one that looked nice and that might fit in your living room, point to it and then proceed to hire a crew of movers to get that humongous thing into your house. (We said the shopping part was easy, not the getting it into your house part.) Today, things are different. Thanks to technology, getting a new TV into your house may no longer require a work crew and union contracts.… View this story
