Now you can have your entire music library and an audio system to play it on with you at any time. Store your iPod or other MP3 player in one pocket, and save the other pocket for soundmatters’ new foxL. Soundmatters’ foxy little foxL device is a mere 5.6 x 2.2 x 1.4 inches, but you can crank it with a full-range output that produces 80 Hz to 20 kHz, the company says, and it’s going so far as to define it as “audiophile” quality.… View this story

Wired vs. Wireless
Richard M. Sherwin
07/09 02:10 PM, 3 Comments
The major audio-video accessory companies fear that the big CE manufacturers have finally delivered on the age old promise of "No New Wires." With Sony and Panasonic starting to introduce products that are supposedly wire-free, the accessory companies have been touting their own new wireless solutions for HDTV to HDMI to whole home audio and other house cluttering products and services. Here's a look at both sides of this ever troublesome home theater dilemma. No More Wires Please! (By Susan Davis, an award winning advertising… View this story

I’ll have a blue, blue blue Bluetooth Christmas….At least that’s what the folks at the Bluetooth Special Interest Group are hoping. The organization held a holiday preview in New York this week to show new Bluetooth products that will be available for the holiday sales season. Displayed among the usual fare of Bluetooth earpieces and computer peripherals were the following new and notables: Vroop Liveboard: A scoreboard that shows live scores and on-base information for your favorite Major League Baseball team. The tabletop device pulls… View this story

When your company is named iLuv, the products start to become a bit obvious. Sure, it’s another iPod dock to notch on their belts, but the iLuv i399 holds a nice little surprise inside. The 2.1 iPod-loving system throws in a nifty feature called BluePin II technology, which means it can blast audio to and from Bluetooth-enabled devices, up to 300 feet.  Other features include a built-in subwoofer, an FM stereo with preset buttons, a digital clock, and an auxiliary line input. It’s also got… View this story

BlackBerry users could soon have another gadget to get addicted to. Rumors of the Remote Stereo Gateway have been floating for a while, but the Boy Genius Report says that the unit has been seen for a relatively cheap $80. However, Tessco’s site doesn’t make ordering the add-on very easy. It’s hard to tell if the unit is actually available now, if it’s just for pre-order, or what. RIM isn’t helping matters, since they haven’t officially announced the product yet. One thing we do know:… View this story

Despite Vista’s tumultuous journey into (and out of) PCs nation-wide, Vista SideShow-enabled devices like Ricavision’s VAVE100 Universal Remote are still being released with some regularity, if not frequency. Must be there is a lot of faith in Gadgets, those go-getters of information accessed from a Windows Vista PC by SideShow devices like the VAVE100. It’s the SideShow technology that turns this higher-end remote into something that’s just enough “more” to be worth considering. And at $299, it had better be a little more. Good thing… View this story

How many times has a handheld caused you to swerve on or off the road? Just because your car isn’t covered with mementos doesn’t make it right. However, the Venturi Mini does. This little gadget uses wireless Bluetooth technology to stream music in the car, as well as allow for hands-free calling. Just plug it into your car’s 12-volt power port, and you can give your hands a break from multitasking while driving. It works with MP3-enabled phones, as well as stand-alone MP3 players; up… View this story

Who wouldn’t want better audio quality in their A/V gear? For portables, any improvements are welcomed, and the latest comes from IOGEAR. The company has teamed with SRS Labs to incorporate SRS’ Wow HD technology into its new Bluetooth Audio Transport, which, you guessed it, aims to improve audio performance of content played on any Bluetooth-enabled audio device. The audio you get wirelessly from your Bluetooth-enabled MP3 players, mobile phones, computers and even home stereo system will feature greater immersive realism and improved bass response,… View this story

Let the fun begin—Nokia just announced that they are shipping the N81 and N81 8GB “multimedia computers.” Each unit packs dedicated game and music keys into a tiny mobile phone. That’s right; it does make calls. You wouldn’t know that from the press release, but that apparently is not much of a selling point these days. Something that might be a selling point: This unit allows for direct music downloads via the Nokia Music Store and a wireless LAN or 3G network. Other features include… View this story

Ask any public relations or telemarketing person—I never answer my cell phone. The reason is simple: The reception in my house stinks. It’s actually the only thing that keeps me clinging to a landline. VTech’s LS5145 might force me to take more calls at home. The 5.8GHz unit is the first in the VTech line to allow both cell and landline calls. Not sure if that’s good when it comes to wanting the workday (or week) to come to an end, but I’m a big… View this story

We love mices to pieces—at least when they’re wireless and have built-in memory. Microsoft just announced the Mobile Memory Mouse 8000, which has 1GB of flash memory built into the unit’s USB receiver. You can work away and save important files right into the mouse. Next thing you know, you won’t even need a screen. That’s a neat little gimmick, which can come in handy, if not in the home office, than definitely on the road. Whether you are carrying PowerPoint presentations or pictures of… View this story

Stylish colors, slim profile, Bluetooth 2.0 capability—we won’t tap Samsung’s new MP3 players with that horrid and overused “iPod killer” label, but they are definitely a solid alternative to the uber-popular device. Both the YP-P2 and YP-T10 players will be available in September, with Samsung’s eye on design clearly demonstrated in the sleek look. The YP-P2 is only 0.4 inches thick; the YP-T10, just 0.3 inches. The YP-P2 comes in black, white and wine red; the YP-T10 in midnight black, white cloud and mystic purple.… View this story
