One of the easiest ways to Beat Black Friday is to look for package deals. Having a 50” plasma hanging on the wall is great, but seeing is only half the battle. You need a little sound to round out the experience. But if you’re shopping for a 720p plasma around Black Friday, something tells me you don’t have a multi-thousand-dollar budget for audio.  Luckily, Best Buy currently (until midnight Saturday) has a tidy little package consisting of the PN50B450 50” 720p plasma and HT-Z320… View this story

Zip Express Installation has scored another win for its home entertainment and networking installation business. The company has partnered with Shopko, a $2 billion regional retailer of everything from pharmaceuticals to optical services to home entertainment gear. Shopko, headquartered in Green Bay, Wis., has 136 stores in 13 states throughout the Midwest, Mountain and Pacific Northwest regions. With the deal, Zip strengthens its furniture assembly and regular old “white glove” delivery offerings in its roster of services. Furniture assembly starts at $130. Shopko customers can… View this story

Unlike the automotive and lending industries, President Obama and Congress will probably never look to bail out the consumer electronics industry. But the industry has been proactive with its own stimulus plan: new technologies to excite consumer spending. Consumers can look at the evolution of the flat-panel TV market in two ways: the products are more affordable, and they are more eco-friendly. Leading the way are new technologies like light emitting diode (LED) and organic light emitting diode (OLED). These join the market’s traditional technologies… View this story

Quite some time ago we predicted the death of plasma technology, albeit a tad early than was comfortable for most of our readers. The large reason behind this prediction was the advances being made in LCD technology. With the introduction of LED backlighting, LCDs have overcome one of the final hurdles that sets them apart from their plasma counterparts — black levels. The Toshiba Regza 46SV670U capitalizes on this equalization of technologies and maximizes the viewing experience, bringing LCD into the realm of plasma and… View this story

The California Energy Commission (CEC) delayed a vote on setting new energy-efficiency standards for TVs in the state, planning to now address the issue at its Nov. 18 business meeting. The Commission is considering proposed sales restriction for energy-hogging TVs that will be imposed in two tiers, in January 2011 and January 2013, though the first phase of restrictions will not include TVs larger than 58 inches. Click here to read the proposed energy requirements. The proposal has generated much controversy, pitting the environmental advocates… View this story

Vizio has added two small-sized LED LCD TVs that have profiles of less than one inch, the 19-inch VM190XVT and 23-inch VM230XVT. The TVs use edge-lit LED backlighting that is usually found on larger screens. Only the 23-inch model is 1080p, but both feature 20,000:1 dynamic contrast ratios, 5ms response times and 300 nits of brightness. Both models also offer two HDMI inputs, a standard PC input, SRS TruVolume to eliminate “volume inconsistencies” and SRS TruSurroundHD. Other features on both TVs: Ambient light sensors that… View this story
