Earlier this week we showed you a deal on a 73” Mitsubishi 1080p DLP display that’s currently one of the least expensive ways to break into large-screen 3D TV.  While that deal has since expired, if 73” is just a touch too big but you’re still interested in frugal 3D TV, Dell Home also has the 60” and 65” versions of the same C9 series “3D Ready” DLP TVs for $899 and $929 respectively.  The latter 65” WD65C9 for $929 is *today-only*, normally $979, while… View this story

The loudest buzz-word in the industry these days is 3D. One thing that rarely comes attached to AV industry hype-trains, however, is the word cheap.  There’s almost always a very hefty early-adopter tax associated with any new bleeding-edge technology, and 3D is no different. With Panasonic’s 50” 3DTV combo pack coming in at around $2,800 and displays from Samsung sharing similar price points, the cheap 3D HDTV horizon might seem pretty far away ... especially if you want something with a bit more size than… View this story

Pioneer Adds Bluetooth-Streaming, 3D-Ready Receivers Following in Sony’s footsteps, Pioneer has begun adding HDMI 1.4 (and, by proxy, support for 3D video) to their new AVRs.  Starting with the 5.1 VSX-520-K and -820-K, Pioneer looks to be supporting HDMI 1.4 and 3D from the bottom up.  Expect more powerful, feature packed, 7.1 AVRs to follow. [Electronic House] Manufacturers Introduce Low-end 3D Projectors Optoma, Viewsonic, and Acer have all announced low-end 3D front-projectors. All models beam in 720p or XGA resolutions and support NVIDIA 3D Vision.… View this story

When I wrote about the life left in plasma TVs, I called plasmas the bookends of the display market, representing the extreme low- and high-ends of the 40-inch-plus category. But being at the extremes doesn’t mean you can’t find great bang for your buck. The 58-inch TC-P58V10 plasma is at the top of the Panasonic food chain. 6ave.com, an authorized dealer, has the TC-P58V10 for just $2398 with free shipping after coupon code AFLPAN2398. The 1080p set has a 600hz refresh rate, 40,000:1 native contrast… View this story

CRT TVs. Laserdisc. VHS. Beta. CED (bet you have to look that one up). All of these once represented a state-of-the-art technology, but have since made their way to that big home theater in the sky. Many consumers think plasma displays also are dead, or are on their way out. But plasmas shouldn’t be relegated to the book-ends of the display market just yet, at least not as far as LG Electronics and Panasonic are concerned. LG is releasing eight new plasmas, including its INFINIA… View this story

True or False? Do most people buy an HDTV before big events like the Super Bowl or the Olympics? According to a recent random survey of 600 people by Retrevo, the answer is false. Although these media events may spur some people to buy an HDTV, the biggest motivator is price. Seventy-five percent of the survey respondents said that major events like the Super Bowl don’t matter as much as a good deal. Eleven percent said the Super Bowl would be enough to get them… View this story

Q. I am looking at purchasing a Samsung PN63B590 for my living room. I’m going plasma because of the size, and my viewing distance is 15-20 feet. Is there a better option that you know of for the same price range? - Steve, Indiana A. Steve, my suggestion, considering your viewing distance, is to go with a two-piece projection system. I searched around and found an Epson Home Cinema 8100 1080p Projector for $1,500. I also found an Elite Screen 100-inch EZ Frame CineGrey Screen… View this story

This seems like a no-brainer, judging by what was on display at CES 2010, but DisplaySearch issued a report saying 3D TVs and connected TVs will explode in 2010. DisplaySearch says 3D-ready TVs will grow from 200,000 units in 2009 to 1.2 million units in 2010. There will be 64 million 3D units by 2018, according to the report. “We have passed the first hurdle,” says Paul Gray, DisplaySearch director of TV electronics research. “The critical Blu-ray 3D specification is written, but now comes the… View this story

CES 2010 in Las Vegas was all about 3D. There were 3D Blu-ray players, 3D network announcements from ESPN, Discovery Channel, and DirecTV. And we had a slew of new 3D TVs from Vizio, Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, Toshiba, and LG Electronics. Tack on James Cameron’s “Avatar” exploding at the box office and signs point to 2010 being the year 3D home theater arrives. The TV manufacturers haven’t released many details about pricing and availability, but they are promising to deliver 3D TVs at some point… View this story
