HDTVs Getting Cheaper
Rachel Cericola

I can’t tell you how many people tell me they are waiting to buy an HDTV—“waiting for the prices to drop,” they always say. Well, it looks like that wait could be worth it after all. HD Guru says that prices are dropping soon. Despite recent price cuts, Mitsubishi, Sharp, LG, Panasonic and Samsung are all expected to lower prices again, as much as $400, in the upcoming weeks. Apparently, with everyone scrounging for gas money, the manufacturers are finding themselves stuck with a surplus.…

There’s plenty of options and opportunities to tune in, too, and we mean plenty—3,600 hours of TV…

10 Antennas for Over-the-Air HDTV
Ben Hardy

Although the old engineer adage “the uglier the better” is still given as antenna selection advice, manufacturers are working hard to find a middle ground. Among the 10 antennas we’ve selected you’ll find “traditional"-looking pieces with multiple branching elements that hearken back to the antenna-laden rooftops of yore, sleek outdoor units designed to appeal to the aesthetic-minded folk who want their antenna’s lines and style to complement those of the new flat screen (never mind that the two will sit on opposite sides of the…

Gordon Jones

While the talking heads are busy discussing/debating the role of the Internet in the ‘08 Presidential elections, few have mentioned the influence our beloved big screens might have on voter opinion. If you think that’s pushing the power of TV, take a moment to remember (learn about?) the Kennedy-Nixon debate of 1960. According to the bean counters, 25 percent of U.S. households now own at least one HDTV set. I can’t say they all have high def enabled (ugh) but let’s agree that more Americans…

Have you figured out if all of your TVs will be ready when the FCC flips the switch from analog to digital next February? Nielsen Media Research—you know, the guys who put out the all-important Nielsen ratings measuring how many people watch the TV programs—found that about 10 million households are “completely unready” for the transition. The research, reported by The New York Times, cited that 9.4 percent of U.S. households would have all of their TVs go dark by the time of the transition…

Consumers Want LCD Over Plasma
Rachel Cericola
05/28 10:07 AM,

Consumers have a lot of perceptions and preferences when it comes to purchasing an LCD and/or plasma display—at least that’s what a new TFC Info study says. Although many of those surveyed consider LCD to be the best bargain, price is not the driving factor that most would expect. It seems that the true driving factors are, well… outdated. The top driving force, according to TFC’s “Flat Panel End User Survey: LCD vs. Plasma 2008,” is product longevity. That’s fine and dandy, but as Twice…

Not impressed by high-definition? Perhaps you need to try ultra-definition. That’s what Samsung showed this week, in a big way too—an 82-inch LCD featuring ultra-def—at the Society for Information Display (SID) International Symposium, Seminar and Exhibition this week. Forget about 1920 x 1080, this whopper of a TV features 3840 x 2160 pixels. For that added smoothness, it even has 120 Hz refresh that can be found on some of today’s 1080p sets. If color’s more your thing, this set won’t disappoint (really, how could…
