Funnyman Vince Vaughn highlights this week’s Blu-ray releases with the arrival of Couples Retreat in high-definition. The Time Traveler’s Wife also arrives on Blu-ray in time for Valentine’s Day, featuring the stunning Rachel McAdams (for the men) who tries to build a life with “her one true love,” Henry, who is a time traveler (for the women). If you’re into action movies, there’s some old-school Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Running Man (1987) and old-school Wesley Snipes in Drop Zone (1994). For music lovers, there’s a… View this story

Hate the lag time it takes to load a Blu-ray disc and get the movie fired up in your system? Or just the time it takes to thumb through your collection and actually find the movie you’re looking for? If you use an S1Digital Entertainment Server or other form of Media Center, S1Digital wants to help by centralizing your optical disc collection. It’s introducing a Blu-ray Disc Changer that can store up to 100 discs and interfaces with Media Center for simpler navigation and selection.… View this story

This week is Oscar nomination week, so apparently Hollywood decided to ride that theme for the releases on Blu-ray disc as well. Several Academy Award winners in the Best Picture and other categories are arriving, either as first-time appearances in the high-definition format or remastered double-dip efforts that we hope offer a little more than the first time around. (Click here to view our Top 10 releases for the week.) If you’re into some classics, this is a great week for you to purchase that… View this story

For years San Francisco-based Dolby Laboratories has defined the way people hear movies and television. The company’s influence on electronic media is arguably so strong, a case could be made that home theater would not be the multi-million dollar pastime it is today without the developments it has introduced to the consumer electronics market. Dolby’s TrueHD format is one of the company’s latest audio formats and since its introduction a few years ago it has been caught in the middle of the high-def optical disc… View this story

Usually we focus on the movie releases in our weekly Blu-ray spotlights. However, this week there are a few engaging musical items that are sure to make your home theater system sing. This Is It is a must for Michael Jackson fans. He was supposed to perform an astounding 50-show run in London, and before passing away last year a good amount of his rehearsal footage was captured on film, with this documentary being the result. All of that musical goodness through Blu-ray can be… View this story

Oppo Digital has announced the BDP-80 Universal Blu-ray player, a lower-priced companion to its well-reviewed BDP-83. The BDP-80 maintains most key features of the BDP-83, including DVD-A and SACD playback, Profile 2.0, 7.1 analog audio output, and a full suite of audio decoders. Features nixed to bring down costs include the removal of the ABT 2010 video processor in favor of a “System-on-Chip,” scaled back materials (the aluminum face plate replaced with plastic), IR in/out, RS-232 control interfaces, and a backlit remote. Oppo is pushing… View this story

Q. I have a Blu-ray player (Samsung BD-P2500) that decodes Dolby TrueHD. It is hooked through HDMI to my Denon 3806 Receiver, which doesn’t have that capability. But shouldn’t I be able to get Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio with that setup? - Pat, Libertyville, Illinois A. No, not necessarily. Your Blu-ray player may be compatible with those formats, but you need a compatible receiver to decode those signals. If your Blu-ray player has multichannel outputs, you can set it up to decode and… View this story

We’re knee-deep in the doldrums of winter now. Unless you live in a warm climate, you’re going a little stir crazy and looking for ways to pass the time. How about 8 or so hours of Jason Bourne, lots of gunfire and car chases galore? In high-definition? Yup, you can have yourself a nice little Bourne Trilogy marathon on Blu-ray as the Matt Damon blockbusters are released in that format this week. You’ll get all the action of The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy and… View this story

How long have The Simpsons been around on TV? Well before DVD came about, and way before high-definition and Blu-ray hit our flat panels. But the long-running animated hit did make the switch to high-definition during last season, its 20th, and we’re now reaping the rewards thanks to the easy transition to Blu-ray disc as The Simpsons Complete 20th Season arrives this week (and you can grab it on Amazon for only $36.99). The specs on Blu-ray.com list the aspect ratio as the traditional boxy… View this story

Less than a month after the Blu-ray 3D spec was finalized, a handful 3D Blu-ray players were announced during CES 2010 in Las Vegas. Panasonic, Samsung, Sony, and Toshiba are the first companies out of the gate. None of the 3D Blu-ray players announced made our list of super-expensive Blu-ray players. That’s because Panasonic, Samsung, Sony and Toshiba haven’t indicated prices for their 3D Blu-ray models. There are only vague 2010 release dates, but all four manufacturers provide some product information. Click here for a… View this story

Blu-ray players are becoming a commodity in the sense that a $78 Blu-ray player can be bought at Walmart. Manufacturers do, however, offer compelling reasons why consumers ought to shell out more cash for better Blu-ray players. It’s up to consumers, of course, to decide if those features are worth saving hundreds — or even thousands — of dollars. CES 2010 saw several super-expensive Blu-ray player releases. You’ll notice that none of the pricey Blu-ray players are 3D compatible. There weren’t many — if any… View this story

Mitsubishi, which has been manufacturing 3D-capable TVs well before the current craze, found itself in a complicated situation with the new 3D Blu-ray spec. Mitsubishi’s method of interpreting a 3D signal is not compatible with the 3D Blu-ray spec. To address this problem, Mitsubishi showed at CES 2010 a 3D Blu-ray adapter (3DC-1000) that takes the HDMI output of a 3D Blu-ray player and converts it to a signal the Mitsubishi TV understands. Mitsubishi 3D TVs create 3D images by generating two separate checkerboard pattern… View this story
