Black Friday can come weeks early if you know where to shop online. BuyDig.com has a great combo deal on the LG 42PQ30 42” 720p plasma with a Panasonic BD60K Blu-ray player with a GGI Hookup Kit for $619. If purchased separately, the price would be around $885. The 42-inch plasma features a 600hz sub-field drive, 12,000:1 contrast ratio, and 3 HDMI inputs. The BD60K is an entry-level player that features BD Live. The hookup kit contains high-quality interconnects (all 6ft lengths), including two HDMI… View this story

The end-of-the-year shopping season means lots of goodies on the Blu-ray front. Sadly, November’s docket of Blu-ray releases doesn’t include any movies starring Megan Fox. But there are a number of blockbusters scheduled to come out to coincide with the holiday shopping season. Going where no Blu-ray release has gone before, new Blu-ray titles include movies starring Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock, Sulley and Mike, Tom and the Griswold family. Two of the notable music releases include Rush and Carlos Santana. Click here for The… View this story

For legendary blues guitarist BB King, the thrill isn’t gone when it comes to touring. The 83-year-old “King of the Blues” is still on the road with his famous Gibson guitar “Lucille” performing 100 concerts per year. And King gets from gig to gig on more than just a simple set of wheels. King rides in a $1.4 million, 45–foot luxury motorcoach that has more than $200,000 worth of electronics inside, making it a center of inspiration for laying down tracks, reviewing audio and video,… View this story

OK, now this is what we’d call a banner week for the Blu-ray format. We’ve got special anniversary releases of some great films, all-encompassing collector packs, Oscar winners, holiday movies, action blockbusters and more. Let’s start with the two anniversary edition standouts—Say Anything… (20 years old now and still keeping us young) and North by Northwest (50 years since Alfred Hitchcock gave us this masterpiece). Will you be blown away by the audio? Probably not. Awed by the video? Perhaps not, though it will be… View this story

It’s always fun to curl up on the couch with that leftover candy and pop in a few movies over Halloween weekend. This year the scary night is even on a Saturday, so you don’t have to worry about getting up early the next morning (plus there’s that extra hour of setting the clock back). Of course it’s even more entertaining when you’ve got a big-screen TV or dark dedicated theater to help secure a fright-inducing environment. What else helps? We think high definition is… View this story

Netflix’s Watch Instantly support in CE devices has been a recurring theme this week. Roku has announced two new Netflix-capable boxes. Sony will soon be adding it to the PS3. Nintendo will likely be following suit on the Wii or upcoming Wii HD. And Best Buy’s Insignia brand is even in on the action with its $99 Blu-ray player. But LG was the very first to bring Netflix support to a Blu-ray player, and one of the first to free Watch Instantly from the confines… View this story

JVC has added a bargain Blu-ray player in time for the holiday shopping season, the entry-level XV-BP11. The XV-BP11 is a Profile 1.1 Blu-ray player that stands just 1.5 inches tall. JVC didn’t indicate any of the trendy video streaming capabilities—Netflix, Amazon, etc.—on this player, so perhaps they’ll have a step-up model on the way soon. Features include a front-panel USB connection, native support for AVCHD (H.264) video, HDMI 1.3 connectivity, composite video and coaxial audio and analog audio connections. The XV-BP11 can play BD-Rom,… View this story

I love reviewing flagship products. It’s a chance to play with some of the very best equipment this industry has to offer. Denon’s DVD-A1UDCI Universal Blu-ray Player is a dream machine that plays every existing disc format known to man, sans HD DVD. If you want a reference player that will handle all of your DVDs, Blu-rays, DVD-A and SACDs, you’ve come to the right place. But it’s not cheap to own this player. So what does $4,500 buy you over, say, a $500 Oppo… View this story

Maybe it’s appropriate for Halloween week, but this week’s Blu-ray release schedule is frighteningly bad. There are a few scary movie choices in there, like Night of the Creeps, The Living Dead at Manchester Morgue and the spoof Stan Helsing ... but c’mon, it’s Halloween, there are plenty of horror movies yet to be released in the high-def format that would have been perfect for this week. Look for our list marking those later this week. At least music fans can rejoice this week—classical and… View this story

The $99 mark has long been the mythic point-of-entry for the masses still sitting on the Blu-ray sideline.  While a few refurbished and extremely entry-level players have flirted with or crossed that threshold, we might finally be seeing some of the players that will really start big-time Blu-ray adoption.  Today’s deal is the newly released Insignia NS-BRDVD3 Blu-ray player, a Best Buy exclusive (since it’s their in-house brand) and currently available for $99 - down from the everyday $149 price.  What makes this cheap-o player… View this story

So much for Microsoft’s exclusive partnership with Netflix. Sony is bringing Netflix streaming to the PlayStation 3 as early as November. For $8.99 a month, Netflix members will be able to instantly watch an unlimited number of movies and TV episodes directly on their PS3. Netflix has been available on the Xbox 360 for a while, but you need to subscribe to Xbox Live, which is an extra $50 per year. Give the edge to Sony here. However, there will be some quirks to streaming… View this story
