Our modern AV world currently has no shortage of ways to get PC video content on to your big screen. One of the most versatile (assuming you have a speedy home network) is the server-side DLNA uPnP server. These work by running a small piece of software on a PC somewhere on your network that transcodes video from websites otherwise left PC captive, and ships them out to any DLNA uPnP client elsewhere on your network. With a growing number of TVs, Blu-ray players, and…

Since Apple unveiled its iPad, custom electronics professionals have had questions, especially to what could be a potentially major application of the new device. These aren’t your father’s Olympics anymore. For one thing, if you miss any of this year’s Winter Olympics action, chances are you can find what you’re looking for by going to NBC’s Olympics website and watching live and recorded footage, some in high-def, right on your computer (or feed it to a TV or projection display). CES was all about 3D this year, with TVs and Blu-ray players showcased throughout the Las Vegas expo. There wasn’t much in the way of info about when these items would become available, but Sony is making an early statement. The company announced today its new BDP-S470 standalone player that’s 3D ready would be out in February, with the 3D ability coming as a firmware upgrade “this summer.” The upgrade will also be available for Sony’s previously released BDP-S570 standalone player as well as its…

Netflix’s Watch Instantly service has become more like Watch Everywhere over the past year, as more devices have added its support. While very convenient and offering pretty good quality, the service is still lacking some features that home theater buffs want ... and still need to play optical disc formats to get. Namely, surround-sound audio and full HD 1080p video. The former appears to be on its way to the rental giant’s streaming service this year, according to a CNET report. The latter, however, it…

When Boxee was still an up-and-coming content aggregator, the company owed a good chunk of its popularity for putting a fresh face on Hulu. Hulu was just one destination offered via the Boxee interface, which provides easy access to dozens of other streaming sites. In February 2009, however, Hulu ordered Boxee (and TV.com) to cease offering Hulu content on their sites. Later, Hulu altered its format so third parties could no longer embed Hulu content – or at least they couldn’t do it as easily…

This seems like a no-brainer, judging by what was on display at CES 2010, but DisplaySearch issued a report saying 3D TVs and connected TVs will explode in 2010. DisplaySearch says 3D-ready TVs will grow from 200,000 units in 2009 to 1.2 million units in 2010. There will be 64 million 3D units by 2018, according to the report. “We have passed the first hurdle,” says Paul Gray, DisplaySearch director of TV electronics research. “The critical Blu-ray 3D specification is written, but now comes the…
