Google is determined to take over another part of your life. The search engine just announced the Google Media Server gadget. Instead of an add-on piece of hardware, this plug-in can stream photos, music and TV shows to plug-and-play devices on your network, such as a PlayStation 3. “In the old days, we used to watch a simple device called a television,” posts software engineer David Garcia, on the Inside Google Desktop blog. “Nowadays, all the stuff worth watching and listening to tends to be…

Everyone seems to have worked the iPod into their home electronics system, so why not the iPhone? CE Pro has a nifty little story about Steve Moore’s AirRemote application, a low-cost way to tweak the iPhone into a universal remote control. The setup includes the AirRemote software and a box from Global Cache, which can turn the iPhone’s IP commands into signals to operate audio, video, lighting, and more. The AirRemote program is also compatible with the iPod touch. “The beauty of the iPod Touch…

After my last laptop went to the great repair shop in the sky, I lost one of my favorite programs: Photoshop. Since I was lucky enough to gain that little perk from a former employer, I was basically left to spend $500 to crop photos. I had tried other freebie programs from the web, but nothing had the same magic. Now others won’t be as clueless—Adobe has launched a free version of the popular program. Adobe’s Photoshop Express is free, but it’s also online. Gizmodo…
