Even if you’re not planning on using it to rock out to Ratt, HD Radio is a great way to hear lots of crystal-clear quality music on the cheap. Manufacturer Radiosophy wants to practically give away the HD Radio experience to you, with a new rebate offer on its HD100 receiver that slashes the price in half to $49.95. It’s about the best deal we’ve seen yet on this seemingly caught-in-between music technology, which is fighting for your attention among the Internet streams, digital music… View this story

While some can’t quite take the leap to HD Radio, Coby keeps trying to entice. The manufacturer just announced two new HD Radio receivers. According to Coby, the HDR-700 ($149) is “the first-ever cordless HD Radio receiver,” allowing it to go anywhere without the hassle of wires. Aside from a rechargeable battery, it also features an SD card slot. If you’re not looking for bells, whistles, and wireless access, the HDR-650 ($99) plays the same stations, featuring an LCD with info on the artist, song… View this story

If you still tune into the radio for big-time music selection, McIntosh Laboratory has it for its loyal fanbase in the HD Radio format now as well. The company has introduced its TM2 AM/FM HD Radio Tuner Module for pristine “CD-quality FM performance” from the HD Radio, plus goodies like RDS Data for your artist, title and song info. The other day I was rocking out to Ratt. I’m not proud of it, but hey—admission is the first step to recovery. I received some info that the price of HD Radio is dropping—to the point where people might actually think about buying it. I’m all for low-low prices, but all I could think of was… did I really need to listen to Ratt any clearer? That said, HD Radio can now be had for just under the $100 mark. Companies like Coby, iLuv, JVC,… View this story

Shopping for a new in-dash car stereo and want some sweet sounding music? Satellite radio is an option, but if “free” sounds better, you should consider HD Radio. HD Radio allows any AM or FM station to broadcast their programming (and for FM, up to 2 alternate channels), in a pristine digital format. AM HD sounds as good as regular FM, and FM HD is CD-quality. HD Radio was years in the making, and today you can buy HD-Radio models for no more than mid-priced… View this story

For those that want to sample HD Radio, iLuv has announced two cheaper product offerings, the i168 and the i169. The i169 ($169.99) combines an iPod dock and dual alarm clock. Using PLL digital tuning technology, the unit has a display to show song name, brand, frequency, and other info. The dock will charge your iPod while you play music or scroll through one of the unit’s 30 programmable presets. The i168 ($89.99) has the same functions, but there’s no dock—and it’s almost half the… View this story

The SR in Marantz’s now-shipping SR8002 A/V receiver stand for surround receiver, but they might as well stand for sweet ride. Yeah, this thing’s kind of like a nice sports car to drive your entertainment system. The $2,099 unit comes fully equipped with 125 watts x 7.1 channels, HDMI 1.3a repeating/switching (with four HDMI 1.3 inputs, two HDMI 1.3 outputs), and THX Select2 processing so you can go full throttle with lossless audio like Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master Audio. If you’re looking for… View this story

Who says radio is dead? These days, we have AM, FM, XM and Sirius satellite radio, Internet radio and HD Radio. So what’s HD Radio? First of all, don’t confuse it with HDTV. The “HD” in the radio format does not mean “high definition,” though there are some similarities in improved performance. Some believe the HD stands for “hybrid digital,” but the HD in the name is simply part of the trademarked logo. No matter, though it does helps to think of HD Radio as… View this story

Just when you thought there wasn’t anything else they could add to the iPod experience. Now HD Radio wants in on the success, so they are teaming up with Apple for a new free service called iTunes Tagging. Basically when you’re rocking out to HD Radio and your favorite Foghat song comes on, you can just push the Tag button, and your system will mark that song for purchase on iTunes. The service is a joint effort between Apple and iBiquity Digital, as well as… View this story

Niles Audio’s IntelliControl ICS whole-home audio system already featured plenty of conveniences—including its multitude of audio source options—and it recently added more flexibility by joining the AMX InConcert program. This will allow the ICS to integrate seamlessly into AMX’s whole-home control systems, making it simpler for your electronic systems professional to install and for you to experience. Remember terrestrial radio? That thing you listened to before Stern went Sirius or you hooked up your iPod to your car stereo? Based on the reaction to my column from last week regarding the sonic quality of satellite radio, it seems like I struck a nerve with many of you. The old-school “quality vs. quantity” continuum of choice is being questioned. And that’s a good thing. Thanks for the postings and interaction off-line as well. One noteworthy dealer made this remarkable observation and comparison: “There are elements of this industry which are fascinating and exciting. On the other hand, there are elements which make me want to… View this story
