First came Onkyo’s Universal Port—on its TXSR507 and TX-SR607 A/V receivers—for a single-cable connection of accessory devices. Now the accessories themselves are starting to come flying in from Onkyo to fill the port. The initial two accessories are sure to provide you with musical bliss, and a whopping amount of audio to choose from the next time you’re ready to fire up your A/V receiver—an iPod/iPhone dock, and the other an HD Radio module. With Onkyo’s UP-A1 dock, you can play and charge your iPod…

iLuv has been on an i-roll, cranking out plenty of iPod-related options (like this one) over the past year. Before the ball drops, they wanted to squeak in one more: the iHD171. Of course, the unit won’t actually be available until next month. When it does hit, you can expect it to deliver more than good old static. This unit provides AM/FM access via HD Radio. It’s not iLuv’s first HD Radio, but it does include everything a digital nerd could want, with a spot…

Satellite Radio Merger: The Beginning of the End?
Richard M. Sherwin

I feel really, really bad both professionally and personally that satellite radio is going away. What? You say the merger will preserve the longest running alternative to the slowly dying, little choice over-commercialized terrestrial radio? I don’t think so! No matter how this transition pans out, satellite radio will never be the same. Last week’s morphing of music and other radio content may do little to prevent the real fans of satellite radio from eventually walking away from the dial. A few months ago, the…

Manufacturer Radiosophy wants to practically give away the HD Radio experience to you, with a new rebate offer on its HD100 receiver that slashes the price in half to $49.95. It’s about the best deal we’ve seen yet on this seemingly caught-in-between music technology, which is fighting for your attention among the Internet streams, digital music…

While some can’t quite take the leap to HD Radio, Coby keeps trying to entice. The manufacturer just announced two new HD Radio receivers. According to Coby, the HDR-700 ($149) is “the first-ever cordless HD Radio receiver,” allowing it to go anywhere without the hassle of wires. Aside from a rechargeable battery, it also features an SD card slot. HD Radio Can Be Had for $100
Rachel Cericola

The other day I was rocking out to Ratt. I’m not proud of it, but hey—admission is the first step to recovery. I received some info that the price of HD Radio is dropping—to the point where people might actually think about buying it. I’m all for low-low prices, but all I could think of was… did I really need to listen to Ratt any clearer? That said, HD Radio can now be had for just under the $100 mark. Companies like Coby, iLuv, JVC,…

Shopping for a new in-dash car stereo and want some sweet sounding music? Satellite radio is an option, but if “free” sounds better, you should consider HD Radio. HD Radio allows any AM or FM station to broadcast their programming (and for FM, up to 2 alternate channels), in a pristine digital format. AM HD sounds as good as regular FM, and FM HD is CD-quality. HD Radio was years in the making, and today you can buy HD-Radio models for no more than mid-priced…

For those that want to sample HD Radio, iLuv has announced two cheaper product offerings, the i168 and the i169. The i169 ($169.99) combines an iPod dock and dual alarm clock. Using PLL digital tuning technology, the unit has a display to show song name, brand, frequency, and other info. The dock will charge your iPod while you play music or scroll through one of the unit’s 30 programmable presets. The i168 ($89.99) has the same functions, but there’s no dock—and it’s almost half the…

The SR in Marantz’s now-shipping SR8002 A/V receiver stand for surround receiver, but they might as well stand for sweet ride. Yeah, this thing’s kind of like a nice sports car to drive your entertainment system. The $2,099 unit comes fully equipped with 125 watts x 7.1 channels, HDMI 1.3a repeating/switching (with four HDMI 1.3 inputs, two HDMI 1.3 outputs), and THX Select2 processing so you can go full throttle with lossless audio like Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master Audio. If you’re looking for…

HD Radio - A New Option
EH Staff

Who says radio is dead? These days, we have AM, FM, XM and Sirius satellite radio, Internet radio and HD Radio. So what’s HD Radio? First of all, don’t confuse it with HDTV. The “HD” in the radio format does not mean “high definition,” though there are some similarities in improved performance. Some believe the HD stands for “hybrid digital,” but the HD in the name is simply part of the trademarked logo. No matter, though it does helps to think of HD Radio as…

Just when you thought there wasn’t anything else they could add to the iPod experience. Now HD Radio wants in on the success, so they are teaming up with Apple for a new free service called iTunes Tagging. Basically when you’re rocking out to HD Radio and your favorite Foghat song comes on, you can just push the Tag button, and your system will mark that song for purchase on iTunes. The service is a joint effort between Apple and iBiquity Digital, as well as…
